- A brahmana is the symbol of sattva-guna, or the mode of goodness. And others, who are not in the mode of goodness, are either ksatriyas, vaisyas, sudras or less than the sudras
- According to Bhagavad-gita (18.42), those possessing brahminical qualifications are situated in sattva-guna
- After the creation of this world of three gunas (sattva, rajas and tamas), You (Krsna) appear to have entered it, although in fact You have not - SB 10.3.14
- Ajnah means one who has no knowledge. And who has no knowledge? Now, tamasa. Those who are in the modes of ignorance. There are three kinds of material nature, modes: sattva, raja, tamas
- Although material nature is conducted by the three qualities - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna - nature is not independent
- Although the Lord acts within time, whether sattva-guna, rajo-guna or tamo-guna is prominent, one should not think that the Lord is under time's control. Time is within His control, for He creates time to act in a certain way
- Although they are not in darkness, but without being in the platform of sattva-guna, nobody can become very intelligent person, philosopher, or mental speculator also. Their position is very high in the material calculation
- Anyone who engages in continuous devotional service to the Lord is situated in the spiritual world and has nothing to do with the material qualities - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- Arrangement is there. If you remain in sattva-guna, then you get higher form of life. Nature's law is so perfect that it hasn't got to create; it is automatically
- As Bhagavad-gita informs us, one can understand how one is saturated with sattva-guna, rajo-guna or tamo-guna
B
- Because people are now associating with the modes of ignorance (tamo-guna) and, to some extent, passion (rajo-guna), with no trace of goodness, they are becoming increasingly greedy and lusty, for that is the effect of associating with these modes
- Behind material nature is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; but one's victory and loss under the influence of sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna are reactions of these modes, not of the Supreme Lord's partiality
- Being captivated by the material world under the influence of the three modes of material nature (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), the living entity can see only the three fruits of activities under the spell of material nature
- Brahminical qualification - truthful, controlling the mind, controlling the senses, simplicity, tolerant, full faith in scripture and God, full knowledge, practical application of knowledge. . . This is called sattva-guna
- By hearing and discussing Srimad-Bhagavatam, the rajo-guna and tamo-guna are subdued, so that only sattva-guna remains. Then rajo-guna and tamo-guna cannot do us any harm
- By our iccha, Krsna gives us to fulfill our desires. So as we contact with the different modes of material nature, we are situated either in sattva-guna or rajo-guna or tamo-guna, and our different characteristics are visible
- By rajo-guna everything material is created, by sattva-guna everything material is maintained properly, and by tamo-guna, when the creation is improperly situated, everything is destroyed
C
- Chili is tama-guna; that is the symptom of tama-guna. As soon as you chew, it becomes hot, everything. You see? So ugra. And sattva-guna is sweetness, so sweet. Therefore, ordinarily in India it is stated that a brahmana is known who can eat more sweets
- Contamination means associating with the different modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna
- Controlling the mind, controlling the senses, & simplicity, very simple in behavior, tolerance; full knowledge; vijnanam, practical application of knowledge; astikyam, full faith in Vedic literature and in God. These are the qualification of sattva-guna
- Creating the background very nicely, sattva-guna, they'll beget a child. That child will come, some great man, now great devotee. So everything has got the material relationship, how to do it. That is sastra. You do it, but follow the sastric injunction
- Creation is the action of the rajo-guna, the mode of passion; maintenance is the action of sattva-guna, the mode of goodness; and annihilation is the action of tamo-guna, the mode of ignorance
E
- Even if one becomes a qualified brahmana in the mode of goodness (sattva-guna), he is still materially contaminated
- Expert colorists, they can display these three colors into eighty-one. Similarly, the material nature, of course, this is one, one energy, but within this energy there are three qualities: sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna
F
H
- He (Krsna) advised Arjuna to rise above the modes of material nature, for the entire Vedic system is filled with descriptions involving sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- He is also present in the varieties of material creations and in the material elements, the total material energy and the modes of material nature (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), as well as the unmanifested material nature and the false ego
- Here in this material world goodness is supposed to be very nice quality, but here the goodness also, temporary. There is chance of being affected, or infected with the other quality, sattva-rajas-tamo guna
- How many causes are responsible for manifesting the various results of activities performed under the three modes of material nature (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna)?
- Human civilization should be so arranged that never mind, it is so mixed up, you have to gradually draw him again to the sattva-guna. That is human civilization. Not that drag him again to the tamo-guna
I
- I think in Darwin's theory there is no such conception of coming to the point of sattva-guna, goodness. They do not know even what it is, sattva-guna
- If the spiritual master is favorably inclined, one naturally receives the mercy of the Supreme Lord, and by the mercy of the Supreme Lord one immediately becomes transcendental, conquering all the influences of sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- If we do not come to the stage of sattva-guna in this human life, then, as Narottama dasa Thakura sings, hari hari viphale janama gonainu - there is no profit in gaining this human form of life
- If we remain in the sattva-guna, then we shall be promoted to the higher planetary system. If we remain in rajo-guna, then we shall remain where we are
- If we want our real benefit of life, then it is better to take shelter of the form of sattva-guna
- If you associate with sattva-guna, then you are promoted to the higher planetary system: Janaloka, Maharloka, Tapoloka. But these rascals, they do not know; still they make an estimate
- If you keep yourself on the suddha-sattva-guna, then you will be able to convert others to become devotees. Therefore it is not difficult. It is very easy also
- In Bhagavad-gita (BG 7.4) the SPG clearly explains: This material world of three modes of nature-sattva-guna, rajo-guna & tamo-guna - is a composition of earth, water, fire, air, mind, intelligence & false ego, all of which are energies coming from Krsna
- In the material existence, the sattva-guna is considered to be first class, the rajo-guna is considered to be second class & the tamo-guna is considered to be third class. But even if we remain in the sattva-guna, that is also not transcendental platform
- In the material world there cannot be anything good. It is bad. If there is real goodness, that is spiritual world, suddha-sattva. Sattva-guna
- In the sastras it is said that the forest is characterized by sattva-guna, goodness, and the city is characterized by rajo-guna, passion, because in the city there is a great deal of illicit sex, intoxication, gambling and meat-eating
- In the temple, Lord Visnu, His throne, His room and all other things associated with the temple are transcendental. The three modes, sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna, have no entrance into the temple
- In the various types of bodies given to the living entities by material nature (yantrarudhani mayaya), either sattva-guna, rajo-guna or tamo-guna is prominent
- In this material world, even the mode of goodness (sattva-guna) is contaminated by tinges of rajo-guna and tamo-guna. When sattva-guna is never contaminated by rajo-guna and tamo-guna, it is called suddha-sattva
- In this material world, there are three qualities, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. So none of these gunas are pure. There is a mixture. And because there is mixture, therefore we see so many varieties. But we have to come to the platform of sattva-guna
- In this verse (SB 10.3.20), the three colors mentioned - sukla, rakta and krsna - are not to be understood literally, in terms of what we experience with our senses, but rather as representatives of sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- It is said in the sastras that in this age of Kali, sattva-guna, the mode of goodness, is practically nonexistent
- It is to be understood by chanting Hare Krsna mantra, by following the regulative principle, he has already come to the platform of sattva-guna. But if it is a false thing, there is no need of second initiation
L
- Lord Visnu is actually above all material qualities, but He accepts control of sattva-guna (the mode of goodness) to maintain the universe
- Lord Visnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Siva have each taken charge of one of these modes - Lord Visnu of sattva-guna, Lord Brahma of rajo-guna, and Lord Siva of tamo-guna. Yet these three controllers are not under the influence of the gunas
- Lusty desires and greed keep the living entity perpetually in ignorance and prevent him from being elevated to the platform of sattva-guna or suddha-sattva-guna
M
- Mayavadi philosophers say that the impersonal God appears in this material world by accepting a body in the sattva-guna
- My dear King Pariksit, the material qualities - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna - all belong to the material world and do not even touch the Supreme Personality of Godhead. These three gunas cannot act by increasing or decreasing simultaneously
O
- O King, this time factor enhances the sattva-guna. Thus although the Supreme Lord is the controller, He favors the demigods, who are mostly situated in sattva-guna. Then the demons, who are influenced by tamo-guna, are annihilated
- O son of Marici, because you are a great personality you are equal toward all the demons and demigods, who are born either from your body or from your mind and who possess one or another of the three qualities - sattva-guna, rajo-guna or tamo-guna
- Of course in the material world the mode of goodness is accepted as the best, and one can be promoted to the higher planetary systems by being on the sattva-guna platform. However, that is not perfection
- Once in the bodily conception, he gets different types of bodies one after the other under the influence of material energy and impelled by the modes of material nature (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna)
- One cannot go beyond these three gunas, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, or mixed
- One is advised to be situated in suddha-sattva-guna, devotional service, for thus one is immune to the reactions of the three modes of material nature
- One must come to the conclusion that even the sattva-guna platform is also not good
- One must come to the platform of suddha-sattva, transcending the sattva-guna. Then one is vidhuta-trilinga, cleansed of the contamination caused by the three modes of material nature. This is possible by the mercy of Krsna
- One must promote himself to the platform of goodness, sattva-guna, by following the instructions of Rupa Gosvami, and then everything concerning how to make further progress will be revealed
- One should be brought to sattva-guna by the establishment of varnasrama-dharma & should develop the brahminical qualifications of being very neat & clean, rising early in the morning & seeing mangala-aratrika. In this way, one should stay in sattva-guna
- One who has developed sattva-guna, he'll be truthful and controlled of the mind, of the senses, tolerant; simplicity; jnanam, full knowledge; vijnanam, practical application of knowledge in life; astikyam, to have full faith in the authority of the Vedas
- One's higher or lower nature - is formed by association with the different qualities, namely sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- Only those who are situated in sattva-guna (the mode of goodness) are fit to understand the Absolute Truth
- Our habits are formed by association with these three qualities (sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna), which are the qualities of goodness, passion and ignorance
P
- People are being controlled by the three kinds of material nature, and if they do not follow the sastric injunction, then he will concoct, he will create something according to his position, either in the tamo-guna or rajo-guna or sattva-guna
- People have got tendency to live in a secluded place, solitary place, without any disturbance. That is sign of sattva-guna
- Presently we are under the sway of the three gunas, the modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna. Out of these three gunas, sattva-guna, the mode of goodness, is the best
R
- Rajo-guna, tamo-guna - directly distress. And sattva-guna, there is little taste of happiness, but that is not complete happiness. The complete happiness is that sattva-guna without any touch of rajo-guna and tamo-guna. That is transcendental
- Remain in sattva-guna and try to elevate yourself from sattva-guna to transcendental stage, brahma-bhutah. Then life is successful
S
- Sattva-guna is also a contamination. And what to speak of rajo-guna, tamo-guna?
- Sattva-guna is the stage of brahmana, rajo-guna is the stage of ksatriya, and tamo-guna is the stage of sudra, and mixed together is the stage of vaisya. Vaisya has mixed quality; and pure sattva-guna, brahmana; pure rajo-guna, ksatriya
- Sattva-guna means everything is clear, prakasa. Just like now the sky is covered with cloud; the sunshine is not clear. But above the cloud there is sunshine, everything clear. And within the cloud there is not clear
- Sattva-guna means they are silent, they are sober, they know what is what, and they try for spiritual advancement. That is sattva-guna
- Sattva-guna means they know how to work. And therefore above this sattva-guna they become devotee, work for Krsna
- Sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, now mixed up by expert management, by expert process they can be separated, and we can come purely on the sattva-guna platform. And as soon as we come to the sattva-guna platform, then we can see things as they are
- Sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. Rajo-guna and tamo-guna is covering. Tamo-guna is very densely covering, and rajo-guna little open, and sattva-guna means prakasa, there is illumination, brahminical qualifications
- Since our bodies are made of sattva-guna, we, the demigods, are internally and externally situated in goodness. All the great saints are also situated in that way
- So many varieties of living entities in this material world, they are due to gunair vicitrah, by the different qualities, mixture of qualities. So on the gross estimation the mixture is sattva, rajas, tamas, the first mixture
- Somebody, by pious activities, by good work, he's already in the sattva-guna, but the arrangement, social, political, economical arrangement is so bad that one is dragged to the tamo-guna. This is not civilization. This is degradation
- Sometimes, by knowledge, the living entity is given liberation. In sattva-guna and rajo-guna, he is subjected to happiness and distress
- Spiritual knowledge is above sattva-guna. Above sattva-guna. Sattva-guna is the best quality, when one brain is clear and he can see things as they are, no hazy understanding but clear understanding. The sattva-guna is the qualification of brahmana
- Sreyamsi means if you want really ultimate benefit of your life, then sattva-tanoh. Sattva-tanoh means Visnu. You have to take shelter of the form of the Lord who is representing sattva-guna, goodness. Not the rajo-guna, not the tamo-guna
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s sankirtana movement can promote all the Jagais and Madhais to the topmost position of sattva-guna, or brahminical culture
- Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti states that the word sukla means "consisting of suddha-sattva." Lord Visnu descends in His suddha-sattva form. Suddha-sattva refers to the sattva-guna which is never contaminated
- Stated in the Bhagavad-gita, that our different types of body, desires, activities, are due to our being infected by the particular quality of material nature. Perfected quality. There are three qualities: sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna
- Superior to living in the forest is living in the temple because the temple is nirguna, above all the gunas, even sattva-guna.
- Supersoul does not become affected by the material qualities, but the individual soul, they are affected by the material qualities, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna
T
- The aim of life is to become free from all the contaminations, even sattva-guna contamination. This has been explained in the Bhagavad-gita very nicely in the Fourteenth Chapter, how to become not contaminated, disinfected
- The brahmanas are situated in the supreme transcendental mode of nature-sattva-guna. Because of this, they are fixed in mind control (sama), sense control (dama), and truthfulness (satya)
- The brahmanas are very dear to the Supreme Lord due to their high sattva-guna qualities, and they also engage in welfare activities for all conditioned souls in the material world
- The contamination of the material world is going on, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. If you contaminate with the tamo-guna, then you must suffer. If you contaminate rajo-guna, you must get disease
- The demigods were harassed by the demons, who were infested with tamo-guna. However, as Lord Brahma has previously described, since the time of sattva-guna had now arrived, the demigods could naturally expect to fulfill their desires
- The distinction between rajo-guna and sattva-guna is explained in this verse - SB 5.10.5

- The material world consists of three modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna. By sattva-guna the Lord maintains the material world, by rajo-guna He creates it, and by tamo-guna He annihilates it
- The material world is a creation of changing modes of nature. These modes - gunas are known as sattva - goodness, rajas - passion and tamas - ignorance
- The material world is conducted by the three modes of nature, namely sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- The more one advances in sattva-guna, the more his brilliance is exhibited by devotional service, but the more one is covered by rajo-guna and tamo-guna, the less visible his brilliance, for he is covered by these qualities
- The more you are in sattva-guna, you get higher level of living in higher planetary system. Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha
- The people who take birth in this tract of land are divided according to the qualities of material nature - the modes of goodness (sattva-guna), passion (rajo-guna), and ignorance (tamo-guna)
- The process is Human civilization means not to drag somebody who is already in the sattva-guna or in the family of sattva-guna, to drag him down to the tamo-guna. The modern civilization is like that
- The sadhu teaches one how to remain purely in sattva-guna by truthfulness, cleanliness, mind control, sense control, simplicity, tolerance, and full faith and knowledge. These are some of the characteristics of sattva-guna
- The sastra has made the path so clear in a way, that in either of these infection, either sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, you can make progress spiritual life. Because we must be in either of these
- The sky is present in a small earthen pot and also in outer space. Thus by proper judgment one can see who is a devata, or demigod, and who is an asura, Yaksa or Raksasa according to the quantities of sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- The society must be divided into four classes of men, as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. There are three gunas, and the sattva-guna, brahmana, a class of ideal men, must be there in the society so that people can follow them
- The spark may fall down in dry grass. As soon as it falls down in dry grass, there is chance of igniting fire in the dry grass - sattva-guna. That is sattva-guna
- The Supersoul does not become affected by the material qualities, but the individual soul, they are affected by the material qualities, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. But the Supersoul is above these gunas always
- The supreme cause of all causes, Narayana, is situated in His own abode in the spiritual world, but nevertheless He controls the entire cosmic manifestation according to the three modes of material nature-sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- The Supreme Lord, being always transcendental to the material qualities (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), is never affected by the influence of these qualities. This same characteristic is also present in the living being
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is always transcendental to the material qualities (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), but nonetheless He is their controller
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is present in everyone's heart, fostering the reactions of sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu, resides within the material world as the sattva-guna-avatara. Lord Siva is the tamo-guna-avatara, and Lord Brahma is the rajo-guna-avatara, but although Lord Visnu is among them, He is not in the same category
- The transcendental stage is called suddha-sattva. Sattva-guna is goodness, and the platform where the other qualities cannot contaminate even the quality of goodness, that is the stage of devotion
- The various modes of material nature do not work all at once. The interactions of these modes are exactly like seasonal changes. Sometimes there is an increment of rajo-guna, sometimes of tamo-guna and sometimes sattva-guna
- The visibility of one's qualities doesn't depend on the partiality of God; it is due to various coverings in different proportions. Thus one can understand how far he has advanceod in terms of sattva-guna & how much he is covered by rajo-guna & tamo-guna
- The whole difficulty is that in this age of Kali there is no sattva-guna and no clearance of the heart, and therefore people are making the mistake of identifying with their bodies

- There is no question of His (the Supreme Personality of Godhead) being influenced by sattva-guna, rujo-guna or tamo-guna, for these material qualities cannot touch the Supreme Lord. The Lord is therefore called the supreme isvara
- These great sages and saintly persons, what is their qualification? They are situated in knowledge, in sattva-guna, in light. They are not in darkness
- These interactions (of the three modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna) create different forms, bodies, activities and changes, which all occur perfectly
- They (people of the modern age) are simply developing the qualities of rajas (passion) and tamas (ignorance), neglecting the other quality of nature, sattva (goodness), and the brahminical qualifications. Therefore the entire society is in chaos
- This material world is a transformation of the material qualities (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), yet no one could possibly explain it perfectly, even in a lifetime as long as that of Brahma No one in the material world is perfect
- Those who are in the sattva-guna, for them everything is clear, and those who are in the tamo-guna, everything is ignorance, and those who are mixed up, neither rajo-guna, neither tamo-guna, via media, they are called rajo-guna. Three gunas. Tamasa
- Those who are purely in association with the modes of goodness, sattva-guna, they are considered as brahmana. And those who are associated with the rajo-guna, passion, they are called ksatriyas
- Those who are working in sattva-guna, they will go to the higher planetary systems. There are Janaloka, Maharloka, Tapoloka, Brahmaloka, Satyaloka, Siddhaloka. You'll go there
- Those who come to the human form through the quality of sattva-guna were cows in their last animal incarnation
- Three classes are always there, either you go to America or hell or heaven - anywhere - because there are three gunas: sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. Prakrtijan gunan. You cannot escape it
U
- Unless one is situated in sattva-guna, there is no possibility of peacefulness
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha. If you are regulated in the modes of goodness, sattva-stha, sattva-guna, then you are promoted to the higher planetary system, higher system of life
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah: (BG 14.18) great rsis, sages and sannyasis who maintain themselves in sattva-guna, or the mode of material goodness, are elevated to a higher planetary system
V
- Varnasrama-dharma is essential, for it can bring people to sattva-guna
- Vasudeva said, "Everything, in fact, is a manifestation of Your one energy. The three qualities of material nature - sattva, rajas and tamas - and the result of their interaction are linked up with You (Krsna and Balarama) by Your agency of yogamaya"
- Vasudeva said, "They (sattva, rajas and tamas) are supposed to be independent, but actually the total material energy rests upon You (Krsna and Balarama), the Supersoul"
- Visnu takes charge of sattva-guna (the mode of goodness), Lord Brahma takes charge of rajo-guna (the mode of passion), and Lord Siva takes charge of tamo-guna - the mode of ignorance
- Vyasadeva, the compiler of the Vedic literature, is blackish, but this does not mean that he is in tamo-guna; rather, he is in the highest position of sattva-guna, beyond the material modes of nature
W
- We are now covered with base qualities. So when these base qualities are finished - not altogether, almost finished - then one can come to the platform of sattva-guna
- We can attain the platform of sattva-guna by following the instructions given in Bhagavad-gita. Hearing krsna-katha, topics about Krsna, clears all the dirty things from the mind. Also, if we chant and dance, these dirty things will be wiped away
- We can see that there is no darkness in the sun planet. It is all glowing effulgence. Similarly, in the spiritual world there is no ignorance. Everyone is suddha-sattva. Not only sattva-guna, but suddha-sattva
- We can vanquish all these false conceptions when we come to the platform of sattva-guna. Then we will not be disturbed by tamo-guna or rajo-guna, nor by kama or lobha (lust and greed). This is the vasudeva platform. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya
- We cannot understand the Absolute Truth or the Supreme Person by mental speculation, especially when we are under the influence of the three modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- We have acquired material qualities by associating with the three modes of material nature - sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna
- We have to get rid of this rajo-guna and tamo-guna. We have to be fixed up in sattva-guna, pure life
- We have to transcend all these three qualities, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, especially rajo-guna, tamo-guna. If we do not try to do that, then there is no hope of spiritual salvation or liberation from the material entanglement
- We living entities, we are affected by the material modes of nature, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. But Krsna is not affected. That is Krsna
- We should gradually come to the sattva-guna, so that we may avoid the two lower gunas (rajo-guna and tamo-guna). This can be done if we regularly discuss Srimad-Bhagavatam and hear about Krsna's activities
- What are the symptoms to know that one is situated in the sattva-guna or one is situated in the rajo-guna or one is situated in tamo-guna? By the symptoms
- When he becomes jolly, being situated in sattva-guna, at that time he can understand what is bhagavat-tattva, what is the Absolute Truth, not in the rajo-guna, tamo-guna. That is not possible
- When I realize that I am not this body, then immediately I transcend the three modes of material nature: sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. Under the bodily concept of life, I am influenced by one of the modes
- When one becomes Krsna conscious, the modes of passion and darkness immediately vanish, and then the mode of goodness (sattva-guna) remains
- When one is in the sattva-guna then he can understand that "I am not this body. I am different from this body." For them, those who are in the sattva-guna, for them it is easier
- When the SP of Godhead creates different types of bodies, offering a particular body to each living entity according to his character and fruitive actions, the Lord revives all the qualities of material nature, sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
- When the Supreme Lord appears or descends as an incarnation within this material world, He does not accept a body made of the three modes of material nature - sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna
