- Although Lord Caitanya accepted the highest realization of the Supreme Lord as conjugal lover, He nonetheless requested Ramananda Raya to proceed further
- Although Lord Caitanya accepted the principles, He still requested Ramananda Raya to further explain advanced devotional service. Thus Lord Caitanya gave Ramananda Raya a chance to discuss gradual advancement from the principles of varnasrama-dharma
- Although Lord Caitanya was born in a high brahmana family and was situated in the highest perfectional stage of sannyasa, He nonetheless showed by His behavior that even an elevated person would not hesitate to take lessons from Ramananda Raya
- Although neither could tolerate separation from the other, Ramananda Raya nonetheless offered his obeisances to Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and departed
- Although Ramananda Raya acted as a grhastha and was accepted as an ordinary pounds-and-shillings man, he was always absorbed in the transcendental pastimes of Lord Krsna. Therefore his mind was spiritually situated, and he was interested only in Krsna
- Although Ramananda Raya was a grhastha engaged in government service & Sanatana Gosvami was in the renounced order of complete detachment from material activities, they were both servants of the SPG who kept Krsna in the center of all their activities

- "And out of all songs, what song do you think is the best of all?" Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked. And Ramananda replied that any song which describes the pastimes of Radha and Krsna is the best song. In conditional life, the soul is captivated by sex
- And what do you recommend a person to think of? - Lord Caitanya asked. Ramananda replied that one should always think of the pastimes of Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness
- "And what is the best subject to hear of?" Caitanya Mahaprabhu next asked. "The pastimes of Radha and Krsna," Ramananda replied. Actually when the pastimes of Radha and Krsna are heard from the right source, one at once attains liberation
- "And who is the most worshipable Deity?" Caitanya Mahaprabhu next inquired. Ramananda Raya immediately replied that the transcendental couple, Sri Radha and Krsna, is the ultimate object of worship
- As clouds appear from the ocean, distribute water all over the world, and return to the ocean, so by the grace of Lord Caitanya, Ramananda Raya attained his higher knowledge of devotional service

B
- Because Pradyumna Misra saw that it was late, he did not say anything else to Ramananda Raya. Instead, he took leave of him and returned to his own home
- Because Ramananda Raya always placed himself in the position of a maidservant of the gopis, his rehearsal with the girls was actually on the spiritual platform
- Because the gopis are worshipable personalities, Ramananda Raya, who considered the two girls gopis and himself their maidservant, engaged in their service by massaging their bodies with oil to cleanse them completely
- Because the King has shown so much love for you, Lord Krsna will certainly accept him
- Because there was no question of personal sense gratification when Sri Ramananda Raya was serving the girls, his mind was steady and his body untransformed. This is not to be imitated, nor is such a mentality possible for anyone but Sri Ramananda Raya
- Because You are asking me to speak of the pastimes of Radha and Krsna, Ramananda Raya humbly submitted, I will obey Your order. I will speak in whatever way You like
- Before becoming Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s disciple, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya considered Ramananda Raya an ordinary visayi because he was a householder engaged in government service
- Before departing from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramananda Raya fell to the ground and caught hold of the Lord's lotus feet. He then spoke submissively as follows
- Before Ramananda Raya could even ask the Lord a question about the advancement of spiritual knowledge, the Lord Himself said, "Please quote some verses from scripture about the ultimate goal of human life"
- Being a great devotee, Ramananda Raya was attracted by the features of Lord Caitanya, who appeared as a sannyasi, and he himself came to see the Lord

- Bhavananda Raya had five sons, one of whom was the exalted personality known as Ramananda Raya
- Bhavananda Raya was the father of Sri Ramananda Raya. His residence was in Alalanatha (Brahmagiri), which is about twelve miles west of Jagannatha Puri. By caste he belonged to the karana community of Orissa

C
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu clearly says, Because the King (Prataparudra) loves you, Ramananda Raya, he is very fortunate. Krsna will certainly accept him due to his love for you
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu condemned this principle strongly. During His conversation with Ramananda Raya, He said that regardless of whether a person is born in a brahmana family or sudra family 1) if he knows the science of Krsna he must be a spiritual master
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu had many so-called sudra disciples like Haridasa Thakura and Ramananda Raya
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu proved that a person like Ramananda Raya, although born in a sudra family and situated in the grhastha-asrama, can become the spiritual master of such exalted personalities as Himself and Pradyumna Misra
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu then admitted to His pure devotee, Ramananda Raya, "Now there is no confidential activity unknown to you. Even though I try to conceal My activities, you can understand everything in detail by virtue of your advanced love for Me"
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu's feelings of separation from Ramananda Raya are very difficult to describe. Indeed, it is almost intolerable to do so, and therefore I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) cannot describe them further
E
- Each time Ramananda Raya suggested something, Lord Caitanya rejected it, requesting a better method for spiritual development
- Encouraged by Lord Caitanya to proceed further, Ramananda Raya said that the fraternal relationship with Lord Krsna is on an even higher transcendental plane
- Eventually there was a meeting with Svarupa Damodara Gosvami, and the Lord became very greatly pleased. Then there was a meeting with Sikhi Mahiti and with Bhavananda Raya, the father of Ramananda Raya
- Every day he trained the two deva-dasis how to dance. Who among the small living entities, their minds always absorbed in material sense gratification, could understand the mentality of Sri Ramananda Raya
- Everyone please hear these topics about Ramananda Raya, although they are so wonderful and uncommon that they should not be spoken
F
- Finally Ramananda Raya pacified the King and made him sit down. The Lord bestowed mercy upon him through His body, mind and words
- Finally Ramananda Raya quoted a Vedic aphorism which recommended that one give up all unnecessary endeavor in mental speculation for understanding God because by speculation it is not possible to arrive at the ultimate truth
- Following the instruction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, you have come to hear about Krsna. This is my great fortune. How else would I get such an opportunity

H
- Having heard these verses recited by Rupa Gosvami, Srila Ramananda Raya said - Your poetic expressions are like continuous showers of nectar. Kindly let me hear the introductory portion of the second drama
- Having received Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's permission, Ramananda Raya hastily went to the temple of Lord Jagannatha. Who can understand the devotional service of Raya Ramananda
- He (Caitanya) rejected the idea of the importance of varnasrama-dharma when it was put forward by Ramananda Rai. He said that this advancement of varna and asrama is merely external
- He (Ramananda Raya) compared his tongue to a stringed instrument, saying, "You are the player of that instrument." Thus as Lord Caitanya would play, Ramananda Raya would vibrate the sound
- He (Ramananda Raya) engaged two young girls who were professional dancers and singers to demonstrate the ideology of the drama. Such girls, who are called deva-dasis, are still employed in the temple of Jagannatha, where they are called maharis
- He (Ramananda Raya) is describing the motto of life, that - One should not be falsely proud. One should be very much meek and humble, and try to receive knowledge from self-realized person

- He (Ramananda Raya) said first of all that human life is meant for approaching Lord Visnu through the rules and regulations governing varnasrama-dharma
- He (Ramananda Raya) was able to turn sand into gold by spiritual potency, or, in other words, to elevate a person from a material to a spiritual position
- He again asked Ramananda Raya to speak further, and Ramananda Raya replied, "Pure devotional service without any touch of speculative knowledge is the essence of perfection"
- He alone, and no one else, can understand the position of his mind
- He began personally posing questions and then answering them with conclusive statements. When afternoon came, the topics still did not end
- He offered his obeisances to Pradyumna Misra with all respect and then, with great humility, spoke as follows
- He taught them how to express the symptoms of continuous, natural and transitional ecstasies with the movements of their faces, their eyes and the other parts of their bodies
- Hearing this, Ramananda Raya became absorbed in ecstatic love and began to speak with great transcendental pleasure
- Hearing up to the point of spontaneous love, the Lord said, "This is all right, but if you know more, please tell Me." In reply, Ramananda Raya said, "Spontaneous loving service in servitude - as exchanged by master, servant - is the highest perfection"
- His mind is as steady as wood or stone. Indeed, it is wonderful that even when he touches such young girls, his mind never changes
- However, when the month of Kartika came, they both told the Lord, "Now it is very cold. It is better that You wait to see the Dola-yatra festival and then go. That will be very nice"
- Humility, renunciation and learned scholarship were combined in Sanatana Gosvami, the ideal pure devotee, who was on the same level of understanding as Srila Ramananda Raya
I
- I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) have described but a fraction of the transcendental attributes of Ramananda Raya, as revealed when he instructed Pradyumna Misra
- I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) have thus described the narration concerning Pradyumna Misra and how, following the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he listened to discourses about Krsna spoken by Ramananda Raya
- I (Pradyumna Misra) cannot properly describe the discourses of Ramananda Raya, for he is not an ordinary human being. He is fully absorbed in the devotional service of the Lord
- I actually see You in this way, and this is very wonderful. My Lord, please tell me without duplicity what is causing this
- I also hear topics about Krsna from Ramananda Raya. If you want to hear such topics, go to him again
- I can see that You have bestowed special mercy upon Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. Therefore You have touched me, although I am untouchable. This is due only to his love for You
- I could not realize when I first spoke with Ramananda Raya that his topics and endeavors were all transcendentally uncommon. I made fun of him simply because he was a Vaisnava
- "I do not know anything," Ramananda Raya replied (to Lord Caitanya) in all humility. "I am simply saying what You are causing me to say. I know that You are Krsna Himself, yet You are relishing hearing about Krsna from me"
- I do not know how to inquire, for I do not know what is good and what is bad. Seeing me to be poor in knowledge, kindly speak whatever is good for me by your own good will
- I hear everyone chanting the holy name of Krsna. Everyone's body is thrilled with ecstasy, and there are tears in everyone's eyes
- I now see You appearing like a golden doll, and Your entire body appears covered by a golden luster
- I see that the truths regarding transcendental mellows that You expounded through my mouth are all explained in the writings of Srila Rupa Gosvami
- I shall make arrangements within ten days. Following You, I shall go to Nilacala without delay
- In many instances we have seen the diplomacy of Rupa Gosvami, Raghunatha dasa Gosvami and Ramananda Raya employed in the service of the Lord
- In the town of Vidyanagara, on the bank of the Godavari, there is a responsible government officer named Ramananda Raya
- In this way Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Ramananda Raya passed the whole night relishing the mellows of krsna-katha, topics about Krsna. While they were chanting, dancing and crying, the night ended
- In this way the Lord speaks through my mouth to preach the cult of Krsna consciousness. Within the world, who will understand this pastime of the Lord's
- In this way they both departed to perform their respective duties. Then, in the evening, Ramananda Raya returned to see Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- In this way they both presented many impediments, indirectly not granting the Lord permission to go to Vrndavana. They did this because they were afraid of separation from Him
- Indeed, I have come here just to meet you. It is very good that even without making an effort I have gotten your interview here
- Indeed, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya engaged in water sports with Sri Ramananda Raya, and they both lost their gravity and became like children
- Indeed, they (the brahmanas) were rather surprised to see such a great sannyasi touch a sudra, and they were also surprised to see Ramananda Raya, who was a great governor and practically king of that province, crying simply by touching a sannyasi
- It had been decided that Ramananda Raya would resign from his post as governor and return to Jagannatha Puri to live with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- It is difficult for me to express anything beyond this, Ramananda Raya replied. I can only say that there is an emotional activity called prema-vilasa-vivarta, which I may try to explain but I do not know whether You (Caitanya) will be happy to hear it
- It is even impudent for me (Rupa Gosvami) to open my mouth before you (Ramananda Raya). Then, having said this, he recited the introductory verse of the Lalita-madhava
- It is said that varnasrama-dharma is external, and Caitanya Mahaprabhu requested Ramananda Raya to proceed deeper into the matter and uncover the spiritual platform
- It is your good fortune that you are inclined to hear topics regarding Krsna. The best course for you would be to go to Ramananda Raya and hear these topics from him

- It was stated in the First Chapter of Madhya-lila, verse 149, that Ramananda Raya was bade farewell from Bhadraka. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura states that in those days the place called Remuna also included Bhadraka
L
- Like Ramananda Raya, Sanatana Gosvami was a fully cognizant expert in the conclusions of devotional service and was therefore able to describe such transcendental knowledge
- Lord Caitanya actually took the subordinate position before Ramananda Raya. This has very great significance. If one is serious about understanding the transcendental nature of Krsna, he should approach a person who is actually enriched with KC
- Lord Caitanya and Ramananda Raya sat down together. "Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya has spoken very highly of you," Lord Caitanya informed him. "So I have come to see you"

- Lord Caitanya asked Ramananda Raya to proceed further in order to come to the point of conjugal love
- Lord Caitanya asked Ramananda Raya, "Out of many so-called liberated souls, who is actually liberated?"
- Lord Caitanya asked Ramananda Raya, "What is the most valuable thing in the world?" Ramananda Raya replied that he who has love for Radha-Krsna possesses the most valuable jewel and the greatest riches
- Lord Caitanya inquired: "What is the most profitable thing in the world, the essence of all auspicious events?" Ramananda Raya replied that there is nothing as profitable as the association of pure devotees
- Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu continued, "My dear Raya, you are an advanced devotee and are always filled with ecstatic love for Radha and Krsna. Therefore whatever you see - anywhere and everywhere - simply awakens your Krsna consciousness"
- Lord Caitanya next inquired about those who are after material happiness and liberation from material bondage. "Where do they ultimately go?" He asked Ramananda Raya
- Lord Caitanya rejected the statement cited by Ramananda Raya from Visnu Purana because the Lord wished to reject a class of philosophers known as karma-mimamsa
- Lord Caitanya rejected the third proposal (of Ramananda Raya), for He wanted to demonstrate that renunciation in itself is not sufficient. There must be positive engagement. Without positive engagement, the highest perfectional stage cannot be attained
- Lord Caitanya rejected this second statement (that it is better to give up the results of fruitive activities), saying, "If you (Ramananda Raya) know of something higher, state it"
- Lord Caitanya said to Ramananda Raya: Bhattacarya recommended that I see you in order to understand Krsna. Indeed, he said that Ramananda Raya is the only person who knows something about love of Krsna
- Lord Caitanya said to Ramananda Raya: I have come to you upon the recommendation of Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. Please, then, do not hesitate to relate to Me all the confidential affairs between Radha and Krsna
- Lord Caitanya said, My dear Ramananda, what you have explained regarding the transcendental pastimes of Sri Radha and Krsna is perfectly correct, yet there is something more I would like to hear from you
- Lord Caitanya said: My dear Ramananda, I am not a different person with a fair complexion known as Gaurapurusa. I am the selfsame Krsna the son of Maharaja Nanda, and due to contact with the body of Srimati Radharani I have now assumed this form
- Lord Caitanya showed by His behavior that even an elevated person would not hesitate to take lessons from Ramananda Raya, although Ramananda appeared as a householder situated in a social status beneath that of a brahmana
- Lord Caitanya still requested Ramananda Raya to explain something more: "What are the transcendental features of Krsna and Radharani, and what are the transcendental features of the reciprocation of Their feelings"
- Lord Caitanya still requested Ramananda Raya to explain something more: "What is the love between Krsna and Radharani? If you kindly describe all this to Me, I will be very much obliged. But for you, no one can describe such things"
- Lord Caitanya then passed ten nights with Ramananda Raya, enjoyed his company and discussed the pastimes of Krsna and Radha
- Lord Caitanya transcendental ability to become two and then to become one again was revealed to Ramananda Raya
- Lord Caitanya wanted to impress upon Ramananda Raya that simply by executing the duties of varnasrama-dharma one is not guaranteed liberation. Finally Ramananda Raya referred to the process of bhakti-yoga
- Lord Caitanya was born in a high brahmana family and was situated in the highest perfectional stage of sannyasa, He nonetheless showed by His behavior that even an elevated person would not hesitate to take lessons from Ramananda Raya
- Lord Caitanya, however, knew Ramananda Raya to be a great devotee, and therefore He did not hesitate to touch and embrace him
- Lord Caitanya, however, rejected the proposal (of Ramananda Raya) because simply by renouncing material results in Brahman realization one does not realize the spiritual world and spiritual activities
- Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu accepted the invitation, knowing the brahmana to be a devotee, and slightly smiling, He spoke as follows to Ramananda Raya
- Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then went to the house of the brahmana who had invited Him and took His lunch there. When the evening of that day arrived, both Ramananda Raya and the Lord were eager to meet each other again
M
- Maharaja Prataparudra, in great anxiety, could not endure not seeing the Lord; therefore Sri Ramananda Raya, by his diplomacy, arranged a meeting with the Lord for the King
- Many brahmanas following the Vedic principles accompanied Ramananda Raya. According to the Vedic rituals, Ramananda Raya took his bath and offered oblations to his forefathers
- My dear beautiful friend, if one develops love of Godhead, love of Krsna, the son of Nanda Maharaja, all the bitter and sweet influences of this love will manifest in one’s heart. Such love of Godhead acts in two ways
- My dear friend, this forest of Vrndavana is giving great pleasure to our senses in various ways. Somewhere bumblebees are singing in groups, and in some places mild breezes are cooling the entire atmosphere
- My entire home has been purified by your arrival. Kindly order me. What can I do for you? I am your servant
- My Lord, I don't think that there is even a fraction of Maharaja Prataparudra's loving ecstasy in me
N
- Nevertheless, the mind of Sri Ramananda Raya never changes, although he teaches the girls how to physically express all the transformations of ecstasy
- Now that I (Lord Caitanya) have actually seen your glories, what I heard about you is confirmed. As far as the pastimes of Radha and Krsna in a loving mood are concerned, you (Ramananda Raya) are the limit of knowledge
O
- On one occasion the Lord inquired, "Of all types of education, which is the most important?" Ramananda Raya replied, "No education is important other than the transcendental devotional service of Krsna"
- Once Lord Caitanya asked Sri Ramananda Raya what the best part of education was, and Ramananda Raya replied that the best part of education is advancement in Krsna consciousness
- One must understand this subject (of Ramananda Raya's serving two young girls by massaging their bodies with oil) very seriously and never attempt to imitate such activities
- One should have a strong desire to engage in devotional service. Ramananda Raya has described the regulative principles and developed love of Godhead
- Only Ramananda Raya was endowed with the prerogative to touch a woman; no one should imitate him. Unfortunately, there are rascals who imitate the activities of Ramananda Raya. We need not discuss them further
P
- Please tell me all this, for your poetic ability is wonderful. After offering obeisances to Ramananda Raya, Rupa Gosvami gradually began answering his inquiries
- Pradyumna Misra answered, "Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has sent me to hear topics about Lord Krsna from you"
- Pradyumna Misra replied, "I came simply to see you. Now I have purified myself by seeing Your Honor"
- Pradyumna Misra replied, "Kindly tell me about the same topics you spoke about at Vidyanagara"
- Pradyumna Misra thereupon described the activities of Sri Ramananda Raya. After hearing about these activities, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu began to speak
- Pradyumna Misra was born of a brahmana family and Ramananda Raya of a non-brahmana family, yet Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu advised Pradyumna Misra to take instruction from Ramananda Raya. This incident is described in the Antya-lila, Chapter Five - of CC
- Pradyumna Misra went to Ramananda Raya, who offered him respectful obeisances and said, "Please order me. For what purpose have you come"
- Pradyumna Misra, being thus advised by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, went to the home of Ramananda Raya. There the servant of Ramananda Raya gave him a proper place to sit down
- Prataparudra worshiped both Ramananda Raya and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. Thus he touched the lotus feet of pure devotees and was able thereby to approach Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- Previous to this meeting between Lord Caitanya and Sanatana Gosvami, the Lord met a householder devotee named Ramananda Raya
- Previously the Lord had been asked by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya to visit the great devotee Ramananda Raya at Kabur. The Lord could understand that the man approaching the river bank (Godavari) was Ramananda Raya, and He desired to see him immediately
R
- Ramananda cited from SB: My dear Lord, one should give up monistic speculation & the cultivation of knowledge altogether. He should begin his spiritual life in devotional service by receiving information of the Lord's activities from a realized devotee
- Ramananda continued speaking to Lord: First I saw You as a sannyasi, & then I saw You as a cowherd boy. I see before You a golden doll, & due to its presence Your complexion has become golden. Yet I see that Your complexion is dark, like a cowherd boy's
- Ramananda quoted a verse from (SB 10.8.46) wherein Maharaja Pariksit inquired from Sukadeva Gosvami about the magnitude of righteous activity performed by Yasoda, the mother of Krsna, enabling her to be called "mother" & her breasts be sucked by the SPG
- Ramananda quoted Lord Krsna's injunction in Bhagavad-gita: "Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear" - BG 18.66
- Ramananda Raya admits that whatever he was speaking was not derived from his own intelligence. Rather, everything was coming from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- Ramananda Raya and Caitanya Mahaprabhu talked for the entire night. Sometimes they danced, sometimes sang and sometimes cried. After passing the night in this way, at dawn Ramananda Raya returned to his place
- Ramananda Raya and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya requested the Lord to first observe the Ratha-yatra festival. Then when the month of Kartika arrived, He could go to Vrndavana
- Ramananda Raya and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu discussed Krsna day and night, and thus they passed from five to seven days in great happiness
- Ramananda Raya and the boy then departed from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Ramananda took him back to the King's palace. The King was very happy when he heard of his son's activities
- Ramananda Raya approached Lord Sri Caitanya and offered his respectful obeisances, and the Lord embraced him. Then they began to discuss Krsna in a secluded place
- Ramananda Raya belonged to the second class. He was not a brahmana. In Orissa, the Karana, they are accepted as sudras
- Ramananda Raya cited more evidence from BG: "One who is transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman. He never laments, nor desires, he is equally disposed. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me (Krsna)" - BG 18.54
