- The Bhagavad-gita proclaims that the mahatmas, the great souls, are always chanting the glories of the Lord
- The Bhagavad-gita states that devotees of the highest grade are under the care of daiva-maya, or yogamaya: mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah
- The Bhagavatam always recommends the association of the mahat, or the great soul, for opening the gate of salvation
- The highest principle of spiritual sense means Krsna consciousness, to understand God. That is mahatma, mahatma
- The individual soul is the servant, and therefore he surrenders unto Him. At that time he becomes a mahatma, a great soul. Therefore, a fortunate living being who comes to this understanding, even within the womb of his mother, has his liberation assured
- The lessons of the Bhagavad-gita and all the Puranas, specifically the Bhagavata Purana, are therefore inevitably connected with the history of the Pandava mahatmas. For them, separation from the Lord was just like the separation of a fish from water
- The Lord also says that the mahatmas, or great souls, always engage in the process of chanting the glories of the Lord, and just by hearing, others derive the same benefit
- The Lord confirms in the Bhagavad-gita (7.19): After many births of struggling for existence & cultivating knowledge, when one comes to the point of real knowledge he surrenders unto Me. Such an advanced mahatma, or great soul, is very rarely to be seen
- The Lord tells Arjuna that those who are purely in Krsna consciousness and do not know anything other than Krsna are called mahatma
- The lower my position is servant, then I am great mahatma. Ordinarily they think mahatma, that "I am on the top, on the topmost platform." That is not mahatma. This is our Caitanya philosophy
- The mahatma cannot be manufactured by rubber-stamping an ordinary man. His symptoms are described here (in BG 9.14): a mahatma is always engaged in chanting the glories of the Supreme Lord Krsna, the Personality of Godhead. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatma does not divert his attention to anything outside Krsna because he knows perfectly well that Krsna is the original Supreme Person, the cause of all causes. There is no doubt about it. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatma does not divert his attention to anything outside Krsna, because he knows perfectly well that Krsna is the original Supreme Person, the cause of all causes. There is no doubt about it
- The mahatma is always engaged in different activities of devotional service, as described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, hearing and chanting about Visnu, not a demigod or human being. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatma is not under the control of material nature. And how is this effected? That is explained in the Seventh Chapter (of Bhagavad-gita). BG 1972 purports
- The mahatma's perfection is this: to utilize the human form of life and the resources of nature to extricate himself from the cycle of birth and death
- The mahatmas (great souls) receive transcendental messages from the realized devotees and thus gradually develop devotional service in Krsna consciousness. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatmas are equipoised. They do not see any difference between one living entity and another. They are very peaceful and are fully engaged in devotional service
- The mahatmas are not concerned with knowing the Lord by mental speculation because they enjoy hearing about His glorious activities in His transcendental dealings with His devotees or with the demons
- The mahatmas are not under the clutches of the illusory energy but are under the protection of the spiritual energy. Because of this, the real mahatma is always engaged in the devotional service of the Lord
- The mahatmas are the pure devotees who are on the path to Vaikuntha, the kingdom of God, and who always chant and hear the glories of the Lord rather than talk of dry, profitless philosophy
- The mahatmas become so absorbed in transcendental service that they no longer desire elevation to any of the material planets, nor do they even want to be transferred to any spiritual planet. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatmas see this distinction (between spiritual energy and material energy) and so take shelter under the spiritual energy - daivim prakrtim
- The mahatmas, great souls, strictly observe all the rules and regulations (of the devotional service offered by the great acaryas), and therefore they are sure to achieve the desired result. BG 1972 purports
- The mahatmas, great souls, strictly observe all these rules and regulations, and therefore they are sure to achieve the desired result
- The mahatmas, who fully surrender to the lotus feet of the Lord, are directed by yogamaya, whereas the duratmas, those who are devoid of devotional service, are directed by mahamaya
- The parampara system of disciplic succession is very important as a means of spiritual success. One becomes a mahat by the grace of his mahat spiritual master
- The path of liberation, as recommended by all authorities, is to serve the mahatma transcendentalists
- The PG, Sri Krsna, has said in the Bhagavad-gita that after many births, learned sages eventually surrender unto Him, and that such a mahatma who is able to connect everything that be to Vasudeva (the plenary manifestation of Visnu) is rarely to be seen
- The presence of Krsna in all aspects of the creation is perceived by the mahatmas, the great souls, who are always engaged in the worship of Krsna
- The pure devotees of the Lord take shelter of the para prakrti, the internal potency of the Lord called Laksmidevi, Sitadevi, Srimati Radharani or Srimati Rukminidevi, and thus they become actual mahatmas, or great souls
- The rascals posing themselves as mahatma, that is another thing. That is not authorized. You have to accept anything from the authorized source
- The same (scientific) knowledge can be utilized for finding out God. That is mahatma. This is the difference
- The servants of God are to be respected as God by the devotees who actually want to go back to Godhead. Such servants of God are called mahatmas, or tirthas, and they preach according to particular time and place
- The Supreme Lord is realized in three different phases, as Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan, but Bhagavan is the ultimate realization. One who realizes Bhagavan - the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna - is the most perfect mahatma
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is described herein (in SB 4.21.38) as mahattama-agranih. Within this material world, the mahattamas, or great personalities, are Lord Brahma and Lord Siva, but He is above them all
- The symptom of a mahatma is that he has no engagement other than service to Krsna
- The symptom of mahatma is that he knows that the Supreme Lord, Sri Krsna, is the original Personality of Godhead, and He is the fountainhead and source of all emanation
- The symptoms of mahatma, great soul. So the first symptom is that he is equal to everyone, sama-cittah. And the next qualification is prasanta. Prasanta means pacified. He's not disturbed by any material anxiety
- The word mahatma is generally heard in the West in connection with Mahatma Gandhi, but we should understand that mahatma is not the title of a politician
- The word mahatma means "broadminded." One who cannot understand Krsna is not broad-minded but cripple-minded. If one becomes broad-minded, then by the grace of Krsna one can understand Krsna
- The word mahatma refers to those who are broadminded, not cripple-minded
- The word mahatma to describe the qualifications of Daksa is used sarcastically
- There are many mahatmas, many yogis, jnanis, karmis. They're all good. But if they do not approach the ultimate goal of life - means approaching Vasudeva - then srama eva hi kevalam
- There are so many bogus mahatmas - the svamis, yogis and incarnation and so many rascals - all raksasas, atheist. Such kind are not mahatma
- There are so-called mahatmas. They think that they are very much exalted, they do not require this sankirtanam. Sridhara Swami says that this sankirtana movement is not only for the persons who are sinful, but mahatam api
- There are two kinds of materialists. One is attached to women and sense gratification, and the other is simply a nondevotee. On the positive side is association with mahatmas, and on the negative side is the avoidance of nondevotees and women-hunters
- There are two types of mahatmas - the impersonalist and the devotee. Although their ultimate goal is different, the process of emancipation is almost the same. Both want eternal happiness
- There is a church in the United Nations, and we tried to get a room there for making our propaganda. The church unity denied to give us. So their crippled mind is not expanded. Sa mahatma... Mahatma means broad-minded
- These are the symptoms of mahatmas. So we have to make position that bhajana is so important. And Bhagavad-gita is meant for all solution of material problems, but we are not accepting it
- These methods (rituals of religion, converting into a sannyasi, offering sacrifices) are undoubtedly helpful for spiritual realization, but the real effect is brought about by the grace of a mahatma
- These persons are described here (SB 3.15.46) as duratma, which means a person who has a very crooked heart, or a less intelligent person, just opposite to a mahatma, which means one who has a broad heart
- They (mahatmas) are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible
- They (so-called mahatmas) accept the demigods as different parts of Krsna and worship them for various benedictions. Although the devotees of the demigods thus achieve the desired results offered by Krsna
- They (the devotees of God) transcendentally enjoy the process of hearing and chanting. The Lord approves of the devotional activities of the devotees or mahatmas
- They (the mahatmas) only want Krsna and Krsna's association, and nothing else. That is the highest perfection of life
- They (the mahatmas) only want Krsna's association and nothing else. Such great souls in Krsna consciousness attain the highest perfection of life. In other words, they are the supreme souls. BG 1972 purports
- They are devoid of anger, and they work for the benefit of everyone. They do not behave in any abominable way. Such people are known as mahatmas
- They must be ideal mahatmas
- This Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement is to give chance to this animalistic civilization to associate with devotees and mahatmas so that they can also become devotee and mahatma
- This is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita, wherein the Lord says that after many, many births, a great soul, or mahatma, surrenders unto the Lord, knowing well that Vasudeva, Krsna, is the cause of all causes
- This is mahatma. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivi prakrtim. They are under the protection of daivi-prakrti. There are two prakrtis - spiritual prakrti & material prakrti. The devotees are not under this material prakrti. They're under the spiritual prakrti
- This is the position of a mahatma. If one is not a mahatma, he is a duratma, or a cripple-minded person. Such mentally crippled duratmas are put under the control of the Lord's external potency, mahamaya
- This kirtana, always chanting, glorifying. This is the beginning of mahatma. So you come here. You chant. You become mahatma. Thank you very much
- This mahatma I have already described. Mahatma means devotee. Mahatma does not mean a politician. Mahatma means simply, mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah, bhajanty ananya-manaso
- This man is mahatma. He is thinking of all living entities who are bereft of Krsna consciousness and making plan how to again take them to Krsna consciousness
- This process of kirtana (kirtayantah), always chanting the glories of the Lord, is the beginning of mahatma. That process is simplified by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu who imparted to mankind this chanting of Hare Krsna
- This system of association (to serve the mahatma transcendentalists) has been recommended since time immemorial, but in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy it is especially recommended by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- This transcendental method (hearing and chanting) practiced by the mahatmas gives them sufficient knowledge of the Lord because if the Lord can at all be known to some extent, it is only through the means of devotional service and no other way
- This verse (BG 9.15) is the summary of the previous verses (BG 9.14). The Lord tells Arjuna that those who are purely in Krsna consciousness and do not know anything other than Krsna are called mahatma. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are actually great souls (mahatmas) are fully absorbed in Krsna consciousness, always engaged in the service of the Lord. They are under the care of daivi-prakrti, or yogamaya
- Those who are actually pure devotees are celebrated as mahatmas, or great sages, personalities perfect in knowledge
- Those who are in Krsna consciousness, they are liberal. And those who are acting for his own benefit, they are miser. They are mahatmas who are working for Krsna
- Those who are interested with this body only, with them he has no interest. This is the sign. That is also mahatma. His only business is how to keep friendship with Krsna. That is his only business. Then he is mahatma
- Those who are mahatmas are always engaged in chanting Hare Krsna. Bhajana is the chanting of Hare Krsna. If we serve a mahatma like Haridasa Thakura, who was always engaged in chanting Hare Krsna, our path of liberation is opened
- Those who are mahatmas, their, I mean to say, wandering here and there is to enlighten these poor-hearted grhi. Grhesu grhamedhinam
- Those who are mahatmas, whose hearts have become magnified, understand that - everything belongs to God, and I also belong to God
- Those who are purely in Krsna consciousness and do not know anything other than Krsna are called mahatma; yet there are other persons who are not exactly in the position of mahatma but who worship Krsna also, in different ways. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are thinking in terms of society, nationality, country, religion, or so many things, they are not mahatmas. They are ksudratmas, small, crippled minded
- Those who strive to emulate the mahatmas never fall prey to passivity and regression. Their eagerness and determination to serve the Lord steadily increase
- Thus being questioned by Maharaja Yudhisthira, Mahatma Vidura gradually described everything he had personally experienced, except news of the annihilation of the Yadu dynasty
- Thus they (people distressed or in need of money) are accepted as liberal, broad-minded mahatmas
- To become Brahman means to be completely engaged in rendering devotional service to the Lord. Thus the mahatma understands that if service is to be rendered, it is to be to Krsna & no one else. We have so long served our senses; now we should serve Krsna
- To become Krsna conscious very easily, one must take shelter of a realized soul - a mahat, or mahatma - whose only interest is to engage in the service of the Supreme Lord
- To follow in the footsteps of the Mahatmas means to give submissive aural reception to the words and instructions of the bona fide Spiritual Master
U
- Unfortunately, society is in such an uncivilized state that there are so-called mahatmas who are prepared to kill cows and children and stop the Hare Krsna movement
- Unless one becomes nonenvious, mahatma, there is no question of so-called unity or fraternity. These are all false propaganda
- Unless one is fortunate enough to have the dust of the lotus feet of a mahatma on one's head, there is no possibility of perfection in spiritual life
- Unless one is properly trained by a mahat - a mahatma, or unalloyed devotee of the Lord - there is no possibility of one's understanding Krsna and His devotional service
- Unless society accepts the lotus feet of great mahatmas - devotees who have nothing to do with material possessions - mankind cannot turn its attention to Krsna, whose lotus feet vanquish all the unwanted, miserable conditions of material life
V
- Vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma su-durlabhah (BG 7.19). Such kind of mahatma is very rare. That is the verdict of all Vedic literature, and confirmed by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu: koti-mukta-madhye durlabha krsna-bhakta
- Vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma sudurlabhah (BG 7.19). This can be understood by a mahatma who is perfect in knowledge. Such a mahatma is rarely seen
W
- We are opening many centers all over the world. Why? To give people chance of having this association of a Vaisnava, mahat, mahatma. Therefore those who are in charge of such centers, they must be ideal mahatmas. Mahatma means devotees
- We can just imagine how responsible a task is entrusted to a sadhu like Mahatma Vidura
- We can understand that a mahat, or a great soul, is completely free from association of women. He is mahat. Therefore generally a spiritual master is selected amongst the renounced order of life, sannyasi
- We hear, vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma sudurlabhah: (BG 7.19) if one knows that Vasudeva is the original cause of all causes, he becomes a perfect mahatma
- We require protection. The mahatma, they are also given protection by daivi-prakrti, Krsna's maya. Therefore we chant "Hare Krsna," not alone "Krsna." Hara is Krsna's energy, so we first of all take the shelter of Krsna's energy, daivi-maya, Radharani
- We shall be very careful to avoid these kind of mahatmas, who are thinking themselves as Narayana, equal to Narayana, or sometimes they claim greater than Narayana
- We want liberation. Then mahat-seva: we have to take shelter of mahatma. And, if you want to go to the darkest region of material existence, then yositam sangi-sangam (SB 5.5.2), sense enjoyment
- Whatever one may be, one must take shelter at the lotus feet of a devotee mahatma and treat him as the most exalted well-wisher of all human society. We should take shelter of such a mahatma and ask for his causeless mercy
- When an intelligent man surrenders unto the lotus feet of Krsna and knows completely that Krsna is the cause of all causes, as confirmed in BG, then only can such an intelligent man become a mahatma, or great soul. But such a great soul is rarely seen
- When one (neophyte devotee) is promoted to the next platform of transcendental consciousness, one can understand the importance of mahatmas and devotees, and in that stage one tries to please them
- When one is promoted in that way (under the guidance of the spiritual nature) by surrendering to the Supreme Personality of Godhead-one attains to the stage of great soul, mahatma. BG 1972 purports
- When one is promoted to the next platform of transcendental consciousness, one can understand the importance of mahatmas and devotees, and in that stage one tries to please them
- When one knows Him (the Personality of Godhead) perfectly, one surrenders unto Him and then becomes a mahatma
- When one understands Krsna perfectly, he becomes mahatma. Just try to understand. Not a politician. Not by changing dress, saffron-color cloth. No, that is not mahatma. One who understands Krsna perfectly well, he is mahatma
- When persons with a small fund of intelligence, after endeavoring hard for many, many lives to understand the supreme cause, are finally in actual knowledge of Krsna, Vasudeva, they surrender unto Him. Thus they become great mahatmas, perfect souls
- When the wise man actually becomes wise after many births and whimsical attempts at self-realization, he surrenders unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna. Such a mahatma, or learned person, knows that Krsna, Vasudeva, is everything
- When this verse (SB 7.4.36) says vasudeve bhagavati, one should understand that Prahlada Maharaja's attachment for Nrsimhadeva was attachment for Krsna, Vasudeva, the son of Vasudeva. Prahlada Maharaja is described as a great mahatma
- When we understand that Vasudeva is the Supreme, sa mahatma, then we become the great mahatma
- Who is sadhu? Sadhu means . . . does not mean that having a long beard and saffron-color dress. Sadhu means, mahatma means, who is pure devotee
- Who is the great soul, the mahatma? It is he who is under the influence of the superior energy. At present we are under the influence of Krsna's inferior energy
- Why do you accept somebody as mahatma who does not speak about Krsna? Then you are misleading yourself. Everything, direction, is there (in Bhagavad-gita). Why you create your own mahatma? If you want to be cheated, who can check you? That is your fault
Y
- Yet there are mahatmas, great souls, who can understand Krsna. Arjuna could understand that although Krsna was playing the part of his friend, He was nonetheless the Supreme Personality of Godhead
- You can find out rascal mahatma, simply by changing dress, without Krsna consciousness, declaring himself as God or Krsna. Kick on their face. Krsna is different from all these rascals
- You cannot easily find such a mahatma who clearly understands Krsna
- You do not know. He is a demon, and you are accepting as sadhu. That is the cause of falldown. Mahatma, sadhu, has been described, the supreme authority, Krsna
- You go to the president, Johnson. Ask him, "Don't you serve anybody?" "Oh, yes, I am serving the country." So who is out of service? Nobody is out of service. But he's serving the illusion. And as soon as he serves the Supreme, he becomes mahatma
