Recognized authority

Srimad-Bhagavatam

SB Canto 2

As the mother is the only authority to identify the father of a child, so the mother Vedas, presented by the recognized authority such as Brahmā, Nārada or Śiva, is the only authority to inform us about the Absolute Truth
SB 2.6.37, Purport: The Lord says, therefore, mohitaṁ nābhijānāti mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam: [Bg. 7.13] bewildered by such modes of material nature, they cannot understand that beyond these manifestations is a Supreme Person who is the absolute controller of everything. Brahmā, Nārada and Lord Śiva know about the Lord to a considerable extent, and therefore one should follow the instructions of these great personalities instead of being satisfied with a tiny brain and its playful discoveries such as spacecraft and similar products of science. As the mother is the only authority to identify the father of a child, so the mother Vedas, presented by the recognized authority such as Brahmā, Nārada or Śiva, is the only authority to inform us about the Absolute Truth.

Therefore ācāryavān puruṣo veda. You have to follow the ācāryas. In our country there are ācāryas, Rāmānujācārya, Madhvācārya, Viṣṇu Svāmī, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, those who are recognized authority. Ācāryavān puruṣo veda. In the Bhagavad-gītā, ācāryopāsanam. You have to worship the ācārya
Garden Conversation -- October 14, 1976, Chandigarh:

Indian man (4): But there are so many authorities presented to me. But there is the Bible, there is the Koran, there is...

Prabhupäda: No, first of all, you are born in India. Why you are jumping to Bible? (laughter) This is another foolishness. You take care of your own house. You are jumping like monkey to Bible. (laughter)

Indian man (4): In our own house there are quite a few dharmas.

Prabhupäda: Therefore äcäryavän puruño veda. You have to follow the äcäryas. In our country there are äcäryas, Rämänujäcärya, Madhväcärya, Viñëu Svämé, Caitanya Mahäprabhu, those who are recognized authority. Äcäryavän puruño veda. In the Bhagavad-gétä, äcäryopäsanam. You have to worship the äcärya.

Indian man (6): You have to look up your...

Prabhupäda: Yes. The äcärya's paramparä is there. Evaà paramparä-präptam imaà räjarñayo viduù [Bg. 4.2].

Indian man (4): There is no dearth of äcärya in India. There is äcärya Rajneesh, there is äcärya...

Prabhupäda: No. There is äcärya, and there are fools also. Äcärya is there, and fools are there also. The agnostics are there. They will not accept any äcärya. You accept some äcärya. Why you become skeptic? At least, we have to accept Kåñëa as the supreme äcärya. Why don't you accept Him? If you are embarrassed whom to select äcärya, so who can be better äcärya than Kåñëa? Why don't you accept Him? That means you want to avoid under some plea. Otherwise there is äcärya. If you don't believe in other äcärya, you take at least Kåñëa who is accepted by all the äcäryas. Either Rämänujäcärya, Madhväcärya, or anyone, will they not accept Kåñëa as the supreme teacher? Whole world is understanding Kåñëa is the supreme teacher. At least at the present moment they are accepting. We are selling our books daily five to six lakhs' worth, only these Kåñëa consciousness books. And in our country we do not accept Kåñëa as the supreme äcärya. What is this? That is our misfortune. Kåñëa is recognized äcärya. There is no doubt about it.

Correspondence

1973 Correspondence

If we compare the truth mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita with other books, sometimes there may not be equal standard of understanding. So it is better to accept some recognized authority and follow his footsteps, and that is the best way for understanding God
Lecture on Letter to: Andrew Parco — San Francisco Calif. 7 October, 1972: So far we are concerned we are following the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and we see the knowledge given in the Bhagavad-gita is quite perfect in the matter of understanding God. If we compare the truth mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita with other books, sometimes there may not be equal standard of understanding. So it is better to accept some recognized authority and follow his footsteps, and that is the best way for understanding God. we simply want that people should understand God, and love him also, because human life is meant for this purpose. So if a man loves God more than anything else, he is the perfect man.
