Kirtana, Srila Prabhupada?

Conversations and Morning Walks

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Kirtaniyah sada harih. Without condition, kirtana should go on. And that is the panacea of all troubles. Bhaktivinoda Thakura has given, jay sakal bipod, bhaktivinod bole, jakhon o-nam gai. This is a fact. If you always continue kirtana, there is no danger. You are above all danger.
Conversation Pieces -- May 27, 1977, Vrndavana:

Atreya Rsi: In my country there is also a reaction towards Indians. I had to come twice. Once I came the night before, and they would not give me visa at the entry.

Prabhupada: Accha?

Atreya Rsi: The Indian government.

Prabhupada: Indian. Indian?

Atreya Rsi: Yes, because so many Indians have not been granted visa in Iran, so they are now reciprocating like that, and I had to go back to Tehran to see the ambassador, who is our friend, getting visa and come back immediately.

Prabhupada: Just see.

Atreya Rsi: The government are just playing these games.

Prabhupada: Whimsical. Very, very difficult to deal with such unscrupulous government. But still, we have got open field all over the world.

Ramesvara: In America the book selling has now surpassed last year.

Prabhupada: Accha?

Ramesvara: We are trying to double. So it is not yet doubled, but it has gone...

Prabhupada: Surplus.

Ramesvara: ...beyond last year.

Prabhupada: Oh. That's nice. It is going to be doubled.

Ramesvara: We are confident. By your words it will double.

Prabhupada: Yes. Be doubly blessed. Yes. I say, America is my fatherland. So New Vrindaban is developing? Be happy everywhere.

Kirtanananda: How can we be happy when you're not well?

Prabhupada: Hm? Hm?

Kirtanananda: We can't be happy if you're not well.

Prabhupada: I am always well.

Kirtanananda: Why can't you give us your old age?

Prabhupada: When I see that things are going on nicely, I am happy. What is this with this body? Body is body. We are not body.

Kirtanananda: Wasn't it Purudasa that gave his father his youth?

Prabhupada: Hm?

Ramesvara: Yayati. King Yayati traded his old age.

Kirtanananda: With his son. You can do that.

Prabhupada: (laughs) Who did?

Ramesvara: King Yayati.

Prabhupada: Ah. Yayati. No, why? You are my body. So you live on. There is no difference. Just like I am working, so my Guru Maharaja is there, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati. Physically he may not be, but in every action he is there. I think actually I have written that.

Tamala Krsna: Yeah, it's in the Bhagavatam, that "He who lives with him, he lives eternally. He who remembers his words lives eternally."

Prabhupada: So I am not going to die. Kirtir yasya sa jivati: "One who has done something substantial, he lives forever." He doesn't die. Even in our practical life... Of course, this is material, karma-phala. One has to accept another body according to his karma. But for devotee there is no such thing. He always accepts a body for serving Krsna. So there is no karma-phala. (pause)

Ramesvara: Last volume of Ninth Canto is at the printer.

Prabhupada: Hm?

Ramesvara: The last volume, it is already at the printer, being printed.

Prabhupada: Oh, Ninth.

Ramesvara: It will be here in about ten days. And the first volume of Tenth Canto, we have just received Chapter Four and Chapter Five, and the artists will be finished in two weeks.

Prabhupada: Another thing, the Hindi photographic pages, if you send to Los Angeles, the books can be printed there.

Ramesvara: Printed in America?

Prabhupada: Hm.

Ramesvara: What language? Hindi?

Prabhupada: The photographic pages...

Kirtanananda: For the photographic pages in the Hindi, the printing of the photography...

Ramesvara: The color? That's possible. I can talk with Gopala to see if it is less expensive.

Prabhupada: Because Hindi composition is not possible there. So after composing here, if they send you the photography, finished copy, from that copy, whether you can print there?

Ramesvara: Oh, yes.

Prabhupada: I think you can work out.

Tamala Krsna: Print there.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Ramesvara: In America. The art pages?

Tamala Krsna: No, everything.

Ramesvara: Everything? It will be more expensive because in India they print on cheap paper. If we use the same cheap paper, they'll still have to pay more because it has to be shipped back to India. But I can check.

Prabhupada: Yes. (pause) So?

Tamala Krsna: Kirtana, Srila Prabhupada?

Prabhupada: Hm? Kirtaniyah sada harih (CC Adi 17.31). Our Kirtanananda Maharaja knows very well. He has no danger. He's sticking to that New Vrindaban program, improving, very good example. They eat first-class, nutritious food, and in Philadelphia also.

Tamala Krsna: Pennsylvania, Port Royal.

Prabhupada: Eh?

Tamala Krsna: In our Port Royal farm.

Prabhupada: Yes. First class. Satyabhama gave me...

Tamala Krsna: Oh, that capati.

Prabhupada: "Too thick. How shall I eat it?" Oh, it was so nice.

Tamala Krsna: Satyabhama gave Prabhupada this black capati. He thought, "So thick. How will I be able to eat it?"

Prabhupada: Very delicious and easily digested. They are living very happily. You had been there?

Ramesvara: No, I've just heard all the good reports.

Prabhupada: Very happily. That is life. Eat very sumptuously nutritious food. Chant Hare Krsna. Bas. What is this nonsense life, from five o'clock in the morning driving big, big trucks, "Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh..."? Is that life? In Berkeley... Berkeley? Or where is that? Where are our temple only?

Ramesvara: Yes, Berkeley.

Prabhupada: So there is a road. Whenever you go, always trucks: "Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoo, whoo, whoo..." The docks and ports filled up with all rubbish things. People are harassed. Is that life? And they are compensating by drinking, by illicit sex and meat-eating. Soul-killing civilization. Sita atapa bata barisana. You know this song? There is a song.

Adi-kesava: Govinda dasa. Bhaja Hunre Mana.

Prabhupada: Yes. Sing it. You know?

Adi-kesava: Not all the words.

Prabhupada: You know?

Jayapataka: Most of it.

Prabhupada: Sita atapa, bata barisana, e dina jamini jagi re, biphale sebinu, krpana durajana... Hm? What is that? Capala sukha-laba lagi' re.

Jayapataka: Bhaja hunre mana.

Prabhupada: Ah. Bhaja... Sing it.

Atreya Rsi: Sing it.

Jayapataka: (sings Bhaja Hunre Mana to:) ...sita atapa, bata barisana, ithe ki ache paratiti re...

Prabhupada: It is sita atapa, bata barisana, e dina jamini jagi re.

Jayapataka: (continues singing Bhaja Hunre Mana)

Prabhupada: (correcting Jayapataka:) Bhajahun hari-pada niti re. Sravana kirtana...

Jayapataka: (continues singing Bhaja Hunre Mana)

Prabhupada: (correcting Jayapataka:) Govinda-dasa-abhi...

Jayapataka: (continues singing Bhaja Hunre Mana)

Prabhupada: So why don't you teach this song? You repeat, and they will repeat, and they will...

Tamala Krsna: Chant.

Prabhupada: Very nice song. Very. Just applicable to the point, everywhere. Philosophical, practical.

Jayapataka: (sings) (break)
