- Afraid of being cursed, they (the naked young girls) covered their bodies with their garments. But the two sons of Kuvera (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) did not do so; instead, not caring about Narada, they remained naked - SB 10.10.6
- After changing the body, a living entity generally forgets his previous life, but in special cases, by the grace of the Lord, as with Nalakuvara and Manigriva, one can remember
- After mother Yasoda bound Krsna and became engaged in other household affairs, Krsna observed two yamala-arjuna trees, which were actually Nalakuvara and Manigriva, two sons of Kuvera who had been condemned by Narada Muni
- Although these two young men (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) are the sons of the very rich Kuvera and I (Krsna) have nothing to do with them, but because he (Narada) wanted Me to come face to face with them, I must do so for their deliverance - SB 10.10.25
- Although you fell from the higher planet Svargaloka and became trees, you were most favored by him. I knew of all these incidents from the very beginning
- As a rich man’s sons often become addicted to wine and women, so these two sons of Kuvera (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) were also addicted to wine and sex
B
- Because Narada Muni desired that Nalakuvara and Manigriva see Vasudeva face to face, the Supreme Personality of Godhead wanted to fulfill the words of His very dear devotee Narada Muni
- Because the great sage (Narada) was compassionate upon them (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), he wanted to finish their false enjoyment of intoxication and association with young girls and wanted them to see Lord Krsna face to face
- Because the two sons of Kuvera had been elevated to the association of Lord Siva, of which they were very much proud, they were allowed to wander in a garden attached to Kailasa Hill, on the bank of the Mandakini River - SB 10.10.2-3
- Because they (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) are living like trees (for trees are naked but are not conscious), these two young men should receive the bodies of trees. This will be proper punishment - SB 10.10.20-22
- By my (Narada's) special favor, after the expiry of one hundred years by the measurement of the demigods, they (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) will be able to see the SPG, Vasudeva, face to face, & thus revive their real position as devotees - SB 10.10.20-22
I
- In a similar way (the father has to pinch the child while he asleep so that he can get awake to take some medicine), Narada Muni cursed Nalakuvara and Manigriva in order to cure their disease of material blindness
- In the case of felling the gigantic arjuna trees, the Lord's mission was to deliver the two sons of Kuvera, who were condemned to become trees by the curse of Narada, as well as to play like a crawling child in the yard of Yasoda
- In their former birth, these two sons, known as Nalakuvara and Manigriva, were extremely opulent and fortunate. But because of pride and false prestige, they did not care about anyone, and thus Narada Muni cursed them to become trees - SB 10.9.23
K
- King Pariksit inquired from Sukadeva Gosvami: O great and powerful saint, what was the cause of Nalakuvara's and Manigriva's having been cursed by Narada Muni - SB 10.10.1
- Krsna dragged the mortar, and the two trees fell down. After that, two beautiful men came out of the trees. We (the cowherd boys) have seen this with our own eyes - SB 10.11.4
- Krsna thought, "I must now fulfill the words of My great devotee Narada," Then He proceeded through the passage between the two trees. Although He was able to pass through the passage, the large wooden mortar stuck horizontally between the trees
- Kuvera was the treasurer of the demigods, a very responsible man, and Nalakuvara and Manigriva were two of his sons. And yet they became so animalistic and irresponsible that they could not understand, due to intoxication, that they were naked
N
- Nalakuvara & Manigriva said: May our hands and other limbs be engaged in Your service and our minds always be concentrated at Your lotus feet and our heads always bowed down before the all-pervading universal form of Your Lordship
- Nalakuvara & Manigriva said: O Lord! O source of all auspiciousness and goodness, we offer our respectful obeisances unto You. You are the all-pervading S. P. of Godhead, the supreme source of peace & the supreme personality in the dynasty of King Yadu
- Nalakuvara & Manigriva said: O Lord, our father, known as Kuvera, the demigod, is Your servant. Similarly, the great sage Narada is also Your servitor, and only by their grace have we been able to see You personally
- Nalakuvara & Manigriva said: We pray that we may always be engaged in Your transcendental loving service by speaking only about Your glories and hearing about Your transcendental activities
- Nalakuvara and Manigriva actually had nothing to do with devotional service or seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face, for this is not an ordinary opportunity
- Nalakuvara and Manigriva were great devotees of Lord Siva, but because of material opulence they became so extravagant and senseless that one day they were enjoying with naked girls in a lake and shamelessly walking here and there
- Narada appeared in the garden to give the two sons of Kuvera the seed of devotional service, even though they were intoxicated. Saintly persons know how to bestow mercy upon the fallen souls
- Narada Muni considered all this (the wanting to enjoy weath, wine and women affected by the modes of passion and ignorance) in the case of Manigriva and Nalakuvara because he found in them so much pride in the wealth of their father, Kuvera
- Narada Muni cursed Nalakuvara and Manigriva in order to cure their disease of material blindness
- Narada Muni indirectly gave Manigriva and Nalakuvara the greatest opportunity by his so-called curse
- Narada Muni wanted the consciousness of Nalakuvara and Manigriva to continue, so that even after being released from the life of trees, they would not forget the circumstances under which they had been punished
- Narada Muni wanted to bring Nalakuvara and Manigriva to the platform of devotional service through poverty, and thus he cursed them. Such is the mercy of a Vaisnava
- Narada returned to his abode, known as Narayanasrama, and the two demigods turned into trees, known as twin arjuna trees. They were favored by the causeless mercy of Narada and given a chance to grow in Nanda’s courtyard and see Lord Krsna face to face
- Narada thought that the best punishment for them was to make them immovable living entities, or trees. Trees are, by nature’s laws, immovable. Although trees are covered by the mode of ignorance, they cannot do harm
- Nonetheless, after they (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) become trees and until they are released, by my (Narada Muni's) mercy they will have remembrance of their past sinful activities
O
- O Maharaja Pariksit, by some auspicious opportunity for the two boys (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), the great saint Devarsi Narada once appeared there by chance. Seeing them intoxicated, with rolling eyes, he could understand their situation - SB 10.10.5
- On seeing the two demigods (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) so degraded by intoxication, Narada desired their welfare, and therefore he exhibited his causeless mercy upon them by cursing them
- Once, these two demigods (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), desiring to enjoy, entered the garden of Lord Siva in the province of Kailasa on the bank of the Mandakini Ganges
S
- Seeing Narada passing by, the damsels of heaven covered their bodies with cloth, but the two sons (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), being drunkards, did not have this decency. Narada became angry with their behavior and cursed them
- Seeing the two sons of the demigods (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) naked and intoxicated by opulence and false prestige, Devarsi Narada, in order to show them special mercy, desired to give them a special curse - SB 10.10.7
- Since these two persons (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) have been blinded by the pride of celestial opulence and have become attached to women, I (Narada Muni) shall relieve them of their false prestige
- Since these two persons (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), drunk with the liquor named Varuni, or Madhvi, and unable to control their senses I (Narada Muni) shall relieve them of their false prestige - SB 10.10.19
- Sukadeva Gosvami continued: Having thus spoken, the great saint Devarsi Narada returned to his asrama, known as Narayana-asrama, and Nalakuvara and Manigriva became twin arjuna trees - SB 10.10.23
T
- The devotee's prayer, "At that time You delivered two sons of Kuvera, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, who were staying there as two arjuna trees in the yard of Nanda Maharaj. My only request is that by Your merciful pastimes You may similarly deliver me"
- The great sage Narada considered that because the demigods Nalakuvara and Manigriva were so infatuated by false prestige, they should be put into a condition of life devoid of opulence
- The great sage Narada thought it fitting that, although the brothers would be punished to become trees, by his mercy they would continue to keep their memory and be able to know why they were being punished
- The story of the cursing of Nalakuvara and Manigriva and their deliverance by Krsna, under the all-blissful desire of the great sage Narada, is here described
- The Supreme Personality of God (Krsna) said: The great saint Narada Muni is very merciful. By his curse, he showed the greatest favor to both of you (Nalakuvara & Manigriva), who were mad after material opulence & who had thus become blind - SB 10.10.40
- The two demigod sons of Kuvera (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) were so much intoxicated that they could not appreciate the presence of the sage Narada and therefore did not cover their bodies
- The two demigods Nalakuvara and Manigriva, because of their continuing memory, could understand the supremacy of Krsna by the grace of Narada
- The two great demigods Nalakuvara and Manigriva were sons of the treasurer of the demigods, Kuvera, who was a great devotee of Lord Siva. By the grace of Lord Siva, Kuvera’s material opulences had no limit
- The young girls, however, were not so much intoxicated as the demigods (Nalakuvara and Manigriva), and they at once became ashamed at being naked before the great sage Narada. They began to cover themselves with all haste
- These two young men, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, are by fortune the sons of the great demigod Kuvera, but because of false prestige & madness after drinking liquor, they are so fallen that they are naked but cannot understand that they are - SB 10.10.20-22
- They (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) drank much and engaged in hearing the sweet singing of the beautiful women who accompanied them in that garden of fragrant flowers
- They (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) used to drink a kind of liquor called Varuni. Accompanied by women singing after them, they would wander in that garden of flowers, their eyes always rolling in intoxication - SB 10.10.2-3
- They (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) were in the mode of darkness, and being therefore unable to control their senses, they were addicted to sex life. It was the duty of a saintly person like Narada to save them from their abominable condition
- Thus the curse (that Narada placed on the sons of Kuvera) was ultimately auspicious and brilliant. One has to judge what kind of curse Narada placed upon them
- To bestow upon them (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) special favor, Narada Muni arranged things in such a way that after being released, they would be able to see Krsna in Vrndavana and thus revive their dormant bhakti
W
- What did they (Nalakuvara and Manigriva) do that was so abominable that even Narada, the great sage, became angry at them? Kindly describe this to me (King Pariksit) - SB 10.10.1
- While they were thus enjoying themselves in the water, all of a sudden Narada, the great sage, happened to pass that way. He could understand that the demigods Nalakuvara and Manigriva were too much intoxicated and could not even see that he was passing
- With great strength Lord Krsna began to pull the rope, which was tied to the mortar. As soon as He pulled, the two trees, with all their branches and limbs, fell down immediately with a great sound
- Within the waters of the Mandakini Ganges, which were crowded with gardens of lotus flowers, the two sons of Kuvera would enjoy young girls, just like two male elephants enjoying in the water with female elephants - SB 10.10.4
