Varaha-dvadasi

Festival Lectures

One demon, Hiraṇyākṣa, he pushed this earthly planet within that water, and Lord Kṛṣṇa delivered this earthly planet from water in the shape of a boar. So that auspicious day is today, Varāha-dvadaśī. This is called Varāha-dvadasi.
Varaha-dvadasi, Lord Varaha's Appearance Day Lecture Dasavatara-stotra Purport -- Los Angeles, February 18, 1970:

...lifted the world when it was submerged within the water of Garbhodaka Ocean. The universe which we are seeing, it is only half. The other half is filled with water, and in that water is Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu lying. So one demon, Hiraṇyākṣa, he pushed this earthly planet within that water, and Lord Kṛṣṇa delivered this earthly planet from water in the shape of a boar. So that auspicious day is today, Varāha-dvadaśī. This is called Varāha-dvadasi. So on this day it is better to sing, to glorify the different incarnations of Lord within this universe.

Today, Varāha-dvādaśī, appearance of Kṛṣṇa's taking the incarnation of Varāha, boar... Keśava dhṛta-śūkara-rūpa jaya jagadīśa hare. When keśava dhṛta-śūkara-rūpa or kesava dhṛta-varāha-rūpa does not mean that He is varāha, or He is crocodile, or He is something like... No. He's everything. But that is not by karma.
Varaha-dvadasi, Lord Varaha's Appearance Day Lecture -- Bhuvanesvara, January 31, 1977:

Prabhupāda: Today, Varāha-dvādaśī, appearance of Kṛṣṇa's taking the incarnation of Varāha, boar... Keśava dhṛta-śūkara-rūpa jaya jagadīśa hare.

rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan
nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu
kṛṣṇaḥ svayaṁ samabhavat paramaḥ pumān yo
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi
(Bs. 5.39)

Kṛṣṇa, Govinda, ādi-puruṣa, the original person, He is taking various forms. Rāmādi-murtiṣu specially. Three Rāma: Paraśurāma, Balarāma, and Daśarathi Rāma. So this Rāma means enjoyment. So Kṛṣṇa's enjoyment... It does not mean, Kṛṣṇa has appeared as the boar; it does not mean He is suffering. Everything is ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhāvitābhis (Bs. 5.37). Sometimes a big man becomes a horse. It is... There is a very nice interesting story that the big Prime Minister Gladstone, English, English Prime Minister, Gladstone?

Devotee: Yeah.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So somebody came to see him for an interview. So the servant informed the visitor that "The Prime Minister is now busy, you have to wait." So he was waiting. He was big man. So one hour passed. So he became inquisitive, so with little opening of the door, he wanted to see the how this man is engaged. I am waiting for one hour . So he saw that the Prime Minister has become a horse, taking his grandchild on the back, and he's playing like a horse. And the important visitor is waiting for one hour. So this is enjoyment. The Prime Minister is not the horse, but he is enjoying taking his grandchild on the back and he was playing like a horse and the grandchild was, "Hut! Hut! Hut! Hut!" This was his engagement. So similarly, because he has become the horse of his grandchild, he is not horse, he is enjoying. That is enjoyment. Similarly when keśava dhṛta-śūkara-rūpa or kesava dhṛta-varāha-rūpa does not mean that He is varāha, or He is crocodile, or He is something like... No. He's everything. But that is not by karma.

So today, ekādaśī as usual, the Varāha-dvādaśī will be also observed...
Morning Walk -- February 11, 1976, Mayapura:

Jayapatākā: (break) Bhaumī ekādaśī or Varāhadevir, āvirbhāva-janita upavāsa.

Prabhupāda: Today. Today.

Jayapatākā: Budhabāra, yes.

Prabhupāda: Both together, upavāsa.

Jayapatākā: Yes.

Prabhupāda: Then next day?

Jayapatākā: The next day it says, dina ata pañcāś gote dostha madhye se varāhadevir arcanam te bhaumī ekādaśīr o varāha-dvādaśīr param.(?)

Prabhupāda: So today, ekādaśī as usual, the Varāha-dvādaśī will be also observed and tomorrow breakfast.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Breakfast. Fast? No.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Fasting tomorrow or...

Prabhupāda: No.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Regular...

Prabhupāda: Simply worshiping Varāhadeva. Keśava dhṛta-śūkara-rūpa, jaya jagadīśa hare. That take.

Jayapatākā: Between 8:50 and 10:00 we should break the fast.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Is that called parāyaṇa?

Prabhupāda: Eh? Parāyaṇa.

Correspondence

1970 Correspondence

Varaha-Dvadasi, I have explained the position in regard to #2.
Letter to Pradyumna -- Los Angeles 29 April, 1970:

Regarding your questions about the calendar-almanac:

1. Herapancami is correct (9 July 1970).

2. When there is an important Dvadasi, the Ekadasi fasting is transferred on the Dvadasi, and this is called Mahadvadasi. The 26th October, 1970, is actually Dvadasi, so the fasting is observed together, or Ekadasi fasting is disregarded, and the Dvadasi (Mahadvadasi) fasting is taken as important.

You were give this old Panjika just to consult the names and spelling only. The dates are different, so whatever date I have given, that is correct. Why you are searching Byanjali Dvadasi in this last year's Panjika? What I have given is from this year's Panjika, so everything will not collaborate.

3. The word is __. That is called Odana-Sasthi and the date is 14th December, 1970. That is correct even if you do not find it in the dictionary. The dictionary may not have every word.

5. 7th February, 1971—Varaha-Dvadasi, I have explained the position in regard to #2.

6. So far determining Ekadasi it is counted 11 days after the full moon and 11 days after the new moon, but sometimes it so happens as you have noted one day later. However, what I have given is correct.

The Panjika which I gave you is old Panjika, our calendar is for this new year.
