Conversations and Morning Walks

1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Evening Darsana -- December 3, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: I have seen while coming from Vṛndāvana to Delhi, hundreds and thousands of young men. They are going to the factories on cycle, coming from distant place, at least twenty miles, twenty-five miles, and it takes two hours to reach the factory or more than that. And there he works hard eight hours and then again goes back, two hours, three hours, on cycle. I do not know what kind of rest he takes. This is life. And if we request these young men that "You come here. You live here comfortably. You eat here sumptuously and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa," they will not. Just see how unfortunate they are. Mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ (SB 1.1.10). This is Kali-yuga. All bad men, unfortunate and disturbed. This is the position. They will work so hard, they'll catch daily passenger trains, Calcutta, Bombay, I have seen. They are actually hanging, and some of them are falling down, lost life, and coming from hundred miles away. But still, if you ask him that "You come here. Live with us. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." Even with your family you can come." We are doing that at Māyāpur. He will not. How strong sense gratification propensity is. This is position of Kali-yuga. They are making propaganda, ruṭi kāpar makān. So we are giving, "Come on, ruṭi, makān, kāpar, you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." "No. I want wine. I want meat. I want rundi (?)." This is going on. Simply they say, "Ruṭi, kāpar, makān." But no, they want wine, woman, and sense pleasure, that's all. Ruṭi, kāpar, makān is not difficult. You can get. But they want something more. You see how many advertisements for selling wine in your Hyderabad. Is that, ruṭi, kāpar, makān?

Vāsughoṣa: Even the poorest of men. Just like before, when this temple wasn't here and we were chopping away at the rocks in the foundation, we were paying twenty rupees a day for those men. And we were told that ten rupees every day would go for wine for those same men. Ten rupees out of the twenty they would immediately spend to drink. Even poor people. So many of them.

Prabhupāda: And because we are trying to stop this thing in Europe and America there is agitation that "These people are propagating brainwash. How is that a man who will not eat, drink? This is brainwash." They spend ten rupees out of twenty rupees. Eh?

Room Conversation -- December 26, 1976, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: We are offering best facility.

Indian lady: No she is saying, she wants to...

Prabhupāda: Similarly, you have seen our Navadvīpa also?

Indian lady: Māyāpur dekhi.

Prabhupāda: Māyāpur, yes. So we are giving, as far as possible, comfortable life. Because modern man, he cannot go to the forest and live underneath a tree. That is not possible. Therefore by begging, begging, spending blood, we are getting money all over the world and spend it like this. For me, I can live anywhere. And I can collect one or two ruṭi anywhere. It is not for me. It is for you. I have invited. Come here, stay and preach this cult, Hare Kṛṣṇa movement. That I want. People are being cheated all over the world shamelessly.

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Morning Talk -- April 25, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: You just appoint one local cook. There are good cooks.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Oh, yeah.

Prabhupāda: That ḍāl, ruṭi and purina(?) chutney. If there is no vegetable, you can eat there nicely.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I don't think there'll be any problem at all for the fooding. Actually it seems to me it'll be a very good arrangement in everywhere. Simple but very nice.

Prabhupāda: If you can eat ḍāl, ruṭi with little Pudina chutney, that is sufficient.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah.

Prabhupāda: And at night little milk. Bas, complete food.

Room Conversation Arrival of Jayatirtha and Harikesa -- October 8, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What they supplied? You mean prasādam? There was some... Of course, today is the day after Ekādaśī, so they had some cereal made with gur and some guava fruit salad with guavas and bananas. That was all this morning. Lunch is usually substantial, very good. It's the best prasādam that we have had in many years in India here. This boy, Ayodhyā-pati, he's doing very nicely. He cooks usually... Do you want to know what he cooks for lunch? He cooks a ālu sabji with dahi sauce, and he makes bindi, very nicely spiced, and ḍāl, ruṭis, rice, apple chutney, and dahi, raita. Every day.

Prabhupāda: Who assists him?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: About three other devotees. There's no hired people. They're all fired and gone. Only devotees are cooking, and very tasteful, and everybody, about a hundred and twenty devotees sit together and take prasādam. And the guests from the guesthouse, they also take there. Everyone takes together. No restaurant.

Prabhupāda: Guesthouse, they come.

Room Conversation -- October 9, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tejiyas: They've got some new cows also. One cow is giving twenty liters of milk.

Prabhupāda: So rice and mung.

Tejiyas: Also corn, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Corn.

Prabhupāda: From corn you can make two things: ruṭi and bhāta.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hm. From corn you can make two things: ruṭi, cāpāṭis, and bhāta, or like rice.

Prabhupāda: The villagers will like it very much. You smash it by that ḍheṅki. You know that machine?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: The ladies jump on it.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So as much as it is powdered, make it ruṭi, and the hard portion make rice. The kṛṣāṇas will like, and it is very nutritious.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Actually, Śrīla Prabhupāda, you gave your word to Kṛṣṇa in Bombay that you would see Him sitting in His new big temple. So you have yet to keep your word fully to Him.

Brahmānanda: We have fixed a date for the opening of the Bombay temple-January 1st.

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Brahmānanda: So we would like to invite you to come, Śrīla Prabhupāda. It is your temple. You have asked Kṛṣṇa to come there, and when we all gave up, you carried on the fight.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Everything I do is(?) fighting. Out of (indistinct), fighting, survival and construct such a big temple is a great triumph.

Room Conversation -- October 11, 1977, Vrndavana:

Hari-śauri: What kind of people do you get?

Prabhupāda: High class.

Ātreya Ṛṣi: Higher class. Very intelligent, educated...

Prabhupāda: The low class, they purchase that big ruṭi. (laughs) That's all.

Ātreya Ṛṣi: Big cāpāṭi.

Prabhupāda: They cannot come to the restaurant.

Room Conversation -- October 14, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: That sweet lemon juice.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You want some? Okay. (aside:) Tell Bhakti-caru. It's coming in one second, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (break)

Prabhupāda: Very good.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He liked that, those lemons, sweet lemons. Here's Bhakti-caru.

Bhakti-caru: Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Hm. Today I like to take ḍāl-ruṭi.

Bhakti-caru: Ḍāl-ruṭi? Ācchā, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (Bengali)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Here's Pisimā. You want to see her?

Prabhupāda: She cannot hear me.

Room Conversation With Svarupa Damodara -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: (laughs)

Bhāgavata: We fed them nice prasādam also yesterday, Śrīla Prabhupāda, three meals a day. They get breakfast in the morning, they get some kacuri and some hot jilabi and some ālu sabji and hot milk for breakfast, nāstā. Then in the afternoon for lunch they get two sabjis, they get rice, they get ḍāl, they get cāpāṭis, and two sweets, peṛā and bundi lāḍu. And then in the evening again they get some sabji and ruṭi, samosā, like that.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. We had nice prasādam.

Bhāgavata: And everyone is very pleased and satisfied with the prasādam. (break)

Svarūpa Dāmodara: I think about forty. Forty people. Today it will come more. Then Dr. Khorana is coming tomorrow. He's a medical doctor. He's bringing several of his friends. He's also our life member.

Abhirāma: His son is a devotee. Śrīla Prabhupāda knows him, Navīna Kṛṣṇa.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Navīna Kṛṣṇa. He's in Detroit. After the conference, I'm going to have a debate in Delhi, round-table conference with Dr. Kotari, D. S. Kotari and his group.

Prabhupāda: That will be very nice.

Room Conversation With Svarupa Damodara -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Bhāgavata: They have a space center there, don't they, in Bombay?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: They have got Trombay Atomic Research Center also. There is a place called Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

Bhāgavata: And in Bangalore they have some good institutes.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. We'll go all over India. In Calcutta will be very interesting because there are so many people,

Bhāgavata: Yesterday you took ḍāl and ruṭi?

Abhirāma: Just tasted.

Bhāgavata: Oh. Just tasted.

Prabhupāda: Simply touch.

Bhāgavata: How was it tasting?

Prabhupāda: It was very tasteful, but my tongue has no taste. Maybe gradually by stimulating the body...

Room Conversation -- November 7, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You have to give Prabhupāda some strength to go on the parikrama.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: He said in three days.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Three days. That's good.

Kavirāja: (Hindi with Bhakti-caru)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: But whether Prabhupāda will eat some? Prabhupāda, you will try to eat the Gujarati ruṭi and ḍāl?

Prabhupāda: Hm.

Kavirāja: (Hindi)

Prabhupāda: (Hindi)

Bhakti-caru: (Hindi about different foods with Prabhupāda and kavirāja)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You want to try some mālapuyās later on tonight?

Bhakti-caru: (Hindi)

Prabhupāda: (Hindi)
