Conversations and Morning Walks

1973 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation with Latin Professor -- December 9, 1973, Los Angeles:

Prabhupāda: Sometimes you say that stool is impure, and again you say this stool is pure." But that is fact. Similarly, if we accept Vedic injunction, we save so much time for so-called research work. That is the standard knowledge. So every knowledge is there in the Vedas. There are so many Vedas. Even for our ordinary dealings, just like Āyur-veda. Āyur-veda means medical science. Similarly, Dhanur-veda, military science. Similarly, Jyotir-veda, jyotis, the astronomical science. And those who are, mean, accustomed with Vedic knowledge, it is so nice and, I mean to say, perfect that... Take, for example, that Āyur-veda, medical science. Their process is that this body, the physiological condition, is depending on three things, tri-dhātu, kapha-pitta-vāyu: mucus, bile and air. And the air is felt by the pulse beating. So they learn how to examine the pulse beating, the heart beating.

1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- November 3, 1976, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: He stayed for one week or 15 days. (Hindi)

Devotee (3): (Hindi)

Devotee (4): L-A-R-Y-N-X. Cavity with enclosing muscles and mucus membrane behind and communicating with nose, mouth and larynx.

Prabhupāda: Hm? Here this side, this space some connection, when it is affected that is called laryngitis.

Hari-śauri: Hm.

Prabhupāda: I know some of the medical terms.

Devotee (1): (Hindi)

Prabhupāda: Now this disease is called laryngitis.

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- October 2, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: ...no greater honor than to be called your son, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Where is that Dr. Sharma?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Dr. Sharma. Oh, yes. Where is he? He's here. Did that milk give you any mucus, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: No.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: That's good.

Prabhupāda: It is very, very good.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Really fresh.

Prabhupāda: If I drink this milk twice, morning and evening, I think I can avoid any food.

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: But then that creates mucus. Śrīla Prabhupāda? One problem is that that milk, drinking milk, creates mucus. (Bengali)

Prabhupāda: Cough.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: And then when he coughs he cannot sleep. (Bengali-discussing milk and milk powder)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Can you explain what he said?

Sac-cid-ānanda: Prabhupāda asked him, "Can I take powdered milk?" He said, "No." Only pure cow's milk will cure him, and that cough coming, that will cure his... That cure is there.

Prabhupāda: So that pure cow's milk... (Bengali) ...proportion... (Bengali-about "so much milk, so much water")

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: He is giving medicine for that.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hm. I couldn't follow anything. It was all in Bengali. (Prabhupāda coughs up mucus)

Prabhupāda: So far that... He said that "Life is finished, and you are simply still living by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. And there is still life. Let us try it." Now he is coming. Ask him daily what...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. He speaks English. He spoke with me in English. I think he speaks some English, the kavirāja, a little bit. So you feel a little hopeful?

Prabhupāda: Eh. For me, either live or die, I don't mind. But if you are trying for my life, try it very seriously. That is my formula. No negligence. Whatever he advises, that is good.

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It's good if you can try and make the cough come out, that mucus. You have to give a little extra exertion, I think, to get it out. Is that the bedsore, Śrīla Prabhupāda? (pause) Whoever does this medicine with the kavirāja should be intelligent person. That's all I'm saying. As you said to me, "Don't be negligent." Of course, Your Divine Grace knows me very well, so you called me to tell me that I should cooperate. But my cooperation is immediately there when I see someone is intelligent enough to do it. So Bhakti-caru is fit for that.

Prabhupāda: So call him immediately.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: All right. He said you're living by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. That means it's a miracle that you're alive.

Prabhupāda: I tell him...

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: No, no. That Bombay kavirāja was a businessman. He had a Seiko watch on, special Cross pen, pān in the mouth. He was a pākā bāniyā. (Prabhupāda coughs up mucus) This man appears to be a genuine kavirāja.

Prabhupāda: I think so. So are you sending him telegram?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. I'll do that right now.

Prabhupāda: Where is Haṁsadūta?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You want to see him?

Prabhupāda: I'll sit down. (now?)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You'll sit up? (break) Should I read it, Śrīla Prabhupāda? "The battle royale over the existence of God as creator of life pursued relentlessly by the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement and debunked with equal disbelief to match by the president of the Rationalist Association has fizzled out. Dr. Abraham Kovoor's long-standing challenge, backed with an offer of Rs. 100,000, to anyone who could provide proof of the divine creation of life was taken up by Haṁsadūta Swami of the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement.

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Ginger juice.

Sac-cid-ānanda: And making hot...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massage on chest for mucus to come out.

Prabhupāda: If the mucus come out, the prana(?) come out. (Bengali)

Kavirāja: (Bengali) Two medicine for cough.

Prabhupāda: (Bengali)

Kavirāja: (Bengali-Sac-cid-ānanda translating for Tamāla)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Musk. He's getting that. (Bengali)

Sac-cid-ānanda: Prabhupāda pulse is all right.

Room Conversation -- October 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: You have written him?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. The real problem is the digestion. There's no digestion. Anything you take forms mucus. Instead of forming blood, it forms mucus. You're not as warm as you were yesterday, but you're still a little warm. The rest of your body is not warm. Your head is not so warm. Your pulse is very fast. I don't know what to say, Śrīla Prabhupāda. It's certainly bewildering. I can only expect somehow Kṛṣṇa has to do something, unless Dr.Gosh with some Western-type medicine can do something.

Prabhupāda: This oil massage is very pleasing.

Room Conversation -- October 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: What is the benefit?

Upendra: It's... You might like the taste, and it's very simple. It's not complicated or anything, certainly not mucus-forming, and it's cooling and refreshing to drink. It's just a nice drink and very simple.

Prabhupāda: So, Tamāla Kṛṣṇa?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: What is that?

Room Conversation -- October 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: You are all pure devotees, because you have no other desire.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: We are very neophyte, though. Now you're not drinking, so how will you live, Śrīla Prabhupāda? If you stop drinking everything, how will you get any strength? You're tired of trying anymore? You don't think it's possible, Śrīla Prabhupāda? (Prabhupāda coughing mucus) (break) (devotees chanting in background)

Prabhupāda: That jewelry, etcetera, Kīrtanānanda gave...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What about the...? I have them here.

Prabhupāda: Who gave? Kulādri?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Kulādri brought them. Silk.

Prabhupāda: Very, very costly thing.

Room Conversation -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: No.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So yesterday you took barley water and you didn't get mucus. So why not stick with that for a little while and get some more strength? See, if you get mucus now, because you don't have much strength, it will be difficult for you to cough. First of all, better to get more strength. Then we can take up drinking some things like milk which might cause a little mucus, but then you'd have the strength to cough. Now we should not take any risk. Is that a fact? At least that's how I'm thinking. It may be better you drink some barley water. Do you mind drinking it?

Prabhupāda: With little milk mixed up.

Room Conversation -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Hari-śauri: So she said that she knew how to make some juices from..., like carrot juice but with some ginger and a little hing and other things mixed which would give you very much strength, but at the same time not cause mucus or anything.

Prabhupāda: Let her make.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Let her make?

Hari-śauri: We can try and see what she can make anyway, and then, if you like it, then it may have some good effect.

Prabhupāda: Some vegetable preparation.

Room Conversation -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Śaktimātā: I will try same to small baby. You see, it doesn't matter. I will try to give Prabhupāda something, something. Anything Prabhupāda says, "Yes, this I like," and that is suitable for the body, that is good.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Okay. The main problem is that mucus, because if he gets this cough, then he's so weak he cannot cough properly.

Śaktimātā: That is I understand. I will use that ginger powder, little, and honey. That is very helpful. Also sometimes I will use that keśura. That thing very useful. Also you can get kophur.(?) You can use your throat always here and near the ear...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He doesn't have a cough now. It's not that he gets... He doesn't have a cold or flu. It's not like that kind of cough. It comes from the kind of food he eats. It causes the mucus. So when you cook, you have to cook in such a way that it doesn't form mucus. It's not that he has a cold.

Śaktimātā: I understand. You hear me one thing. I am nothing, Prabhu. I am servant of Prabhupāda. I am servant of the all devotees. Rādhārāṇī, as She suggest me, I will cook. I am nothing. She order me. So She gave that prasādam to Prabhupāda. I am nothing, Prabhu. Don't think, "Shakti will something." I am nothing, Prabhu. Rādhārāṇī, She give Prabhupāda as She like. I don't know. I haven't in my mind anything now also. If She say... I will first go to pray Rādhārāṇī, "Rādhārāṇī, You save Your servant. He is so great bhakta." I am beggar of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So He will hear me.

Prabhupāda: Give her to prepare. I cannot take very thick. Only thin prepara...

Visit From Allopathic Doctor -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Tablet I can take. (Bengali)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Enzymes means animals.

Bali-mardana: Syrup is better if the tablets are all made with anima... (Prabhupāda coughs) He's been having mucus.

Doctor: For this cough. This will be a rather irritable thing to control. For that, Mahārājajī should have breathing exercise. Somebody must have suggested before also for breathing exercise?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: No, I don't think so.

Doctor: It is necessary, because when he is bedridden there will be congestion in the base of the lungs. For ten minutes morning, ten minutes afternoon, ten minutes evening, in this way exercise must be there.

Visit From Allopathic Doctor -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Hari-śauri: Prabhupāda's having a lot of mucus this morning.

Doctor(?): Not eating anything.

Hari-śauri: Only liquid. Some fruit juice and little glucose and grape juice, a little bit. Previously he was taking Complan as well.

Upendra: He had milk last night. The vaidya recommended milk. He had some milk last night, and this morning he had some orange juice. Then the mucus came, after orange juice.

Doctor: When he went to London he was better?

Upendra: No.

Jayatīrtha: First few days I think he was better.

Doctor: When did he come back from London?

Hari-śauri: Thirteenth of September, about a month ago.

Doctor: No improvement. You went with him, no? Bombay, you took. No improvement. But he was better here. Eating something. Does he ask for food?

Upendra: No

Doctor: Never. You are giving nothing except coconut water and these Horlicks.

Bhakti-caru: (Bengali)

Doctor: (Bengali)

Hari-śauri: This is a record of what Prabhupāda's been taking the last few days. (break)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Jaya Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Did you send telegram to this doctor?

Room Conversation -- October 12, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: No, that I have already explained. I don't want to go to hospital.

Kīrtanānanda: So that is not necessary. (Prabhupāda coughs heavily) (break)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Jayapatākā Mahārāja has come from Māyāpur.

Prabhupāda: Come here. (heavy coughing) Mucus is generating, either you take milk or fruit juice. I have given my opinion in that correspondence. And he's a qualified man. If you want him, then somebody may go to him and talk.

Kīrtanānanda: Yes, that should be done. We'll do that today.

Prabhupāda: He wanted to retire and start a clinic here.

Kīrtanānanda: So he can come now.

Prabhupāda: So we can help.

Room Conversation -- October 12, 1977, Vrndavana:

Jayapatākā: Since I left you in Bombay, then I returned and presented the Show Cause to the additional district magistrate. And he just looked at it and postponed it till November 18th. He postponed, so as far as that goes, there's nothing until November 18th. Then, I think, Bhavānanda Mahārāja gave the report about the court. They released... They reduced the bail restriction on the devotees. I went on a tour of Orissa to the two temples there, Bhuvaneśvara and Bhadrak. In Bhuvaneśvara they have nice garden (Prabhupāda coughing up mucus) and about six or seven devotees. They had a nice Vyāsa-pūjā and Janmāṣṭamī festival.

Prabhupāda: Magistrate wants my presence?

Room Conversation -- October 12, 1977, Vrndavana:

Jayapatākā: Well, the government calculates that each person gets 80 grams of dalya and 7 grams of oil, and when that's cooked that comes to nearly about four, five hundred grams cooked per head. It's about three, four clay cups.

Kīrtanānanda: Śrīla Prabhupāda, if we could prop you up for a few minutes you could clear all that mucus out. It would come out much easier. Can we do that?

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Come over here, Pisimā.

Upendra: This side.

Prabhupāda: (converses with sister in Bengali) Somebody may be sent to Imlital Math to call her son.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Which maṭha, Prabhupāda? Imlital Math. All right. Pradyumna will go. Here, Bhakti-caru is here. Prabhupāda said someone should go to Imlital Math to call Pisimā's son.

Room Conversation -- October 14, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Tomorrow shall I take the risk of taking little milk?

Hari-śauri: Generally when you take milk it causes lot of difficulty with mucus. This sweet lime juice, that seems to be doing some good, though. Perhaps it might be better not to take the milk for a little while until your system becomes more healthy.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Hari-śauri: Is there any difficulty from the solid food?

Prabhupāda: No taste.

Room Conversation -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: I cannot...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You cannot...? What, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: (coughs up mucus)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I don't think this milk should be given again, Śrīla Prabhupāda. It has caused maybe this mucus. So we'll give you something to drink after a half hour. Okay. (Yaśodānandana Swami leading Govindam prayers)

Prabhupāda: Viśvambhara.

Upendra: No, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (chanting)

Prabhupāda: Who is...?

Room Conversation With Dr. Ghosh -- October 16, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: (Bengali) ...cough.

Bhakti-caru: Dudhkhile mucus haya. Kal ke ami...(?)

Dr. Ghosh: We'll see to that. I am here.

Bhakti-caru: Sixty cc. Only sixty cc milk he took, and he started coughing the whole night.

Dr. Ghosh: (Bengali) ...chānā, solid chānā... (Bengali) Massage upwards towards the heart. (Bengali) ...preferably on the left side, like this. This is an ideal position for him. I would like to go and see the doctor who will examine his urine tomorrow. (Bengali)

Room Conversation -- October 17, 1977, Vrndavana:

Bhavānanda: Four hundred more than you passed urine the day before. You should take any sort of liquid-milk, juices, water, anything. He also said that you have to take rich protein foods. Milk, curd, chānā, Proteinex, fruits, juices...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: But milk causes mucus for Prabhupāda.

Bhavānanda: They say that the lungs are... Anyway...

Hari-śauri: They haven't seen the difficulty that Prabhupāda has in bringing this stuff up.

Bhavānanda: Milk... There has to be some protein.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Chānā seemed good. Today you had the curd. It seems to have been all right. The cheese this morning, Prabhupāda. I don't notice any cough today.

Prabhupāda: Cough generates later on.

Room Conversation -- October 18, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Not yet, but when it becomes mucus.

Bhakti-caru: That's not milk, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Hari-śauri: Complan is milk-mixed. At least there doesn't seem to be any mucus this morning, and this is a full day now since you took that chānā.

Prabhupāda: The chānā was nothing. So? What do you want to do now?

Bhakti-caru: Should we make you some Complan now, Śrīla Prabhupāda, and some chānā?

Room Conversation -- October 20, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: That other fruit?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Sweet lemons? Do you find that you have a good result with drinking that kind of juice at night? You don't have any reaction in any way? Causing mucus or something? It's okay?

Devotee: We could make an ice cream shake.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So Upendra will make it? All of the devotees are very excited about your travel plans, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (laughter) Maybe Bhagatji will come also.

Prabhupāda: Yes. (laughter) He likes the Māyāpur.

Room Conversation -- November 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Well, Śrīla Prabhupāda, I'll tell you, I'm getting so upset sitting in the room upstairs. I mean I just... I was walking around... Two of the devotees told me this road is so bad that if you go on this road, you're going to be jolted back and forth. The road is terrible. I just can't understand, Śrīla Prabhupāda, why it has to be tomorrow that we have to go. If anybody wants you to travel, I do. My whole desire is to take you all over the world. I want to take you on parikrama, but why do we have to go when you're in this condition? I can't understand it. It just... I was standing outside. This kavirāja, he has worked so hard. He's so much disappointed. He can't understand why he... He says that now, today, you've taken half a kilo of milk. No mucus has is being produced. No stool is being passed. He says tomorrow he wants to give you a medicine that will begin to build the milk into muscles. He's going to get you to a point where you can take two kilos of milk a day. And he says very soon you'll be able to have the strength to actually do parikrama. So why are we throwing everything out the window, that we must go tomorrow? I cannot understand.

Prabhupāda: All right.

Room Conversation -- November 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I mean I'm amazed, Śrīla Prabhupāda. A half a kilo of milk you've drank today—no mucus, no stool, and that is wonderful. You could not have done this two weeks ago.

Bhakti-caru: Yes, when I told the kavirāja he got quite amazed. He told me, "Don't give any more milk. It might..." But Śrīla Prabhupāda wanted some milk now, so I'll give.

Prabhupāda: Where is kavirāja?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He's out again getting medicine. This man, Śrīla Prabhupāda, Adri-dhāraṇa says he sits up all night worried about you, thinking, taxing his mind how to give you just what you require.

Prabhupāda: No.

Room Conversation -- November 11, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: ...days till you get a little more strength. I mean this is a very good sign Śrīla Prabhupāda. You've taken a half a kilo of milk. No mucus, no stool. If you get a few days of strength... I mean I have no objection even tomorrow to take you. I just would like to hear what the kavirāja... I really have a little faith in him. I mean I have all faith on you, Śrīla Prabhupāda. I have only a little faith in him, but I don't want to reject his advice as a doctor. This kavirāja is giving sound advice so far.

Prabhupāda: Where he is?
