Srimad-Bhagavatam

SB Canto 9

In Vṛndāvana and Navadvīpa there are many temples constructed by the king of Maṇipura. Some of our devotees belong to the Maṇipura state. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, therefore, can be well spread in the state of Maṇipura by the cooperative efforts of the Kṛṣṇa conscious devotees.
SB 9.22.32, Translation and Purport:

Nakula begot a son named Naramitra through his wife named Kareṇumatī. Similarly, Arjuna begot a son named Irāvān through his wife known as Ulupī, the daughter of the Nāgas, and a son named Babhruvāhana by the womb of the princess of Maṇipura. Babhruvāhana became the adopted son of the king of Maṇipura.

It is to be understood that Pārvatī is the daughter of the king of the very, very old mountainous country known as the Maṇipura state. Five thousand years ago, therefore, when the Pāṇḍavas ruled, Maṇipura existed, as did its king. Therefore this kingdom is a very old, aristocratic Vaiṣṇava kingdom. If this kingdom is organized as a Vaiṣṇava state, this revitalization will be a great success because for five thousand years this state has maintained its identity. If the Vaiṣṇava spirit is revived there, it will be a wonderful place, renowned throughout the entire world. Maṇipuri Vaiṣṇavas are very famous in Vaiṣṇava society.

Conversations and Morning Walks

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Oh, yes.
Talk with Svarupa Damodara -- April 18, 1977, Bombay:

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Looks like the rainy season has come, but very untimely, a little too early. But it has been almost flooded.

Prabhupāda: It is cool now.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. But now the rain has subsided now. It's very cool. Calcutta was very pleasant. It's very comfortable. (laughs) And Manipur is especially nice because...

Prabhupāda: It is good that so much rain has fallen.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes, because there was some scarcity of water just a few weeks ago, but now it is...

Prabhupāda: This is due to Hare Kṛṣṇa movement.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. I remember Prabhupāda saying that if we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, rain will fall.

Prabhupāda: Yajñād bhavati parjanyaḥ (BG 3.14).

Svarūpa Dāmodara: And I also made about five devotees in Manipur. I was thinking of bringing in Bombay to get trained up so that I can take in south of Manipur.

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: But I decided not to take them at this time because I am coming back in September. About that time I am going. Before I gave them what to do and...

Prabhupāda: They are coming or not?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: In Bombay? Yeah, they will come.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: When will they come?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: In September.

Prabhupāda: No, no, why not earlier?

If the Home Minister is changed now...
Talk with Svarupa Damodara -- April 18, 1977, Bombay:

Svarūpa Dāmodara: And the Chief Minister, the Chief Minister, they heard that I have brought this machine from... So they came personally and wanted to see. Especially his wife. His wife came. The Chief Minister's wife came, and she heard that I have brought this machine, so they wanted to see the Hare Kṛṣṇa movie. So I had to make two shows that night, one in the village, one in the Chief Minister's house. And a life member, he took special interest in showing these things. So I told him, "When I come back I bring one Fairchild from Manipur and all the movies, so that you can go..."

Prabhupāda: Your Manipur is being intimately connected with our movement.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Oh, yes.

Prabhupāda: That's nice.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: They liked it very much, especially... Everybody wants to see the devotees coming to Manipur, but the Home Ministry is giving us little difficulty in getting the permit. All the Manipuris, including the Chief Minister, they all want to have especially American devotees in Manipur. They want to see. But...

Prabhupāda: If the Home Minister is changed now...

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. I was told that this Karan Singh is very favorable.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah, he just gave us his house in Kashmir for using.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: So then it will be a very good time for...

Prabhupāda: He is not Home Minister.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He's not the Home Minister.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Oh, he's the Home Mi...? Oh. So we can...

Prabhupāda: But we can influence him.

Manipur devotees are very enthusiastic.
Room Conversation -- November 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. They are very impressed. They said they'll come many. They told me they're going to come in many numbers.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What about that temple in Manipur?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: I was thinking that we can start...

Prabhupāda: Receive them nicely. The Manipuri is devotee. Receive them nicely.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Didn't some Manipur devotees visit Caitanya Mahāprabhu in Jagannātha Purī sometimes?

Prabhupāda: They go.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: They are all Vaiṣṇavas.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Just on the western gate of Jagannātha Purī there is also a place for Manipur. Devotees there, they serve Lord Jagannātha in Purī, special section for Manipur on the western gate of Jagannātha Purī.

Prabhupāda: Everywhere. Navadvīpa there is Manipur Mandir. Here also.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, the Maharani of Manipur Mandir in Navadvīpa.

Indian man: In Vṛndāvana also Prabhupāda there is one? Which is that?

Prabhupāda: The Sevā-kuñja.

Indian man: Sevā-kuñja.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Also in Rādhā-kuṇḍa.

Indian man: Rādhā-kuṇḍa there is, I know.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: That Sevā-kuñja is under the charge of the Manipuri devotees.

Prabhupāda: Manipur devotees are very enthusiastic.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So is Svarūpa Dāmodara. (Prabhupāda laughs)

Prabhupāda: So Agra University, you lectured professors?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes, professors and students, mostly the professors, from all departments: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and philosophy.

Prabhupāda: Hm!

Svarūpa Dāmodara: They also asked me to bring a film from the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement. So I'm going to show the "Spiritual Frontier" just after the lecture. So I'll go with the Fairchild, the movie projector.

Prabhupāda: Very good. When you have to go?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: The lecture is at 3:15, so I'll go about 11 because I like to also talk personally with some professors to become members of the Institute. That's one of our projects.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Svarūpa Dāmodara is enrolling members, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Indian man: To build his Bhaktivedanta Swami Institute?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hm. How many members you have so far?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: We have, so far, four. But one of the biggest men in Agra Medical College, Dr. Malviya, he became a member. He's a very well known biochemist. So he told me that he's going to contribute articles. We would like members, the professors of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It seems like there is a good future for Bhaktivedanta Institute, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (pause)

Prabhupāda: Who will be president?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Who will be president? Of the institute, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: No, tomorrow.
