Duty of the student

Srimad-Bhagavatam

SB Canto 3

It is therefore the duty of the transcendental students to hear of pure devotees, as explained by similar devotees of the Lord, because one cannot explain about the Lord or His devotee unless one happens to be a pure devotee himself
SB 3.13.4, Purport: Transcendental students are those who undergo great penance in being trained by hearing the Vedas from a bona fide spiritual master. Not only must they hear about the activities of the Lord, but they must also hear about the transcendental qualities of the devotees who are constantly thinking of the lotus feet of the Lord within their hearts. A pure devotee of the Lord cannot be separated from the lotus feet of the Lord for even a moment. Undoubtedly the Lord is always within the hearts of all living creatures, but they hardly know about it because they are deluded by the illusory material energy. The devotees, however, realize the presence of the Lord, and therefore they can always see the lotus feet of the Lord within their hearts. Such pure devotees of the Lord are as glorious as the Lord; they are, in fact, recommended by the Lord as more worshipable than He Himself. Worship of the devotee is more potent than worship of the Lord. It is therefore the duty of the transcendental students to hear of pure devotees, as explained by similar devotees of the Lord, because one cannot explain about the Lord or His devotee unless one happens to be a pure devotee himself.

SB Canto 5

Such allegorical descriptions may not be understood by unintelligent men; therefore it is the duty of the student to approach a bona fide spiritual master for the direct explanation
SB 5.13.26, Tanslation and Purport: King Pariksit then told Sukadeva Gosvami: My dear lord, O great devotee sage, you are omniscient. You have very nicely described the position of the conditioned soul, who is compared to a merchant in the forest. From these instructions intelligent men can understand that the senses of a person in the bodily conception are like rogues and thieves in that forest, and one's wife and children are like jackals and other ferocious animals. However, it is not very easy for the unintelligent to understand the purport of this story because it is difficult to extricate the exact meaning from the allegory. I therefore request Your Holiness to give the direct meaning. There are many stories and incidents in Srimad-Bhagavatam that are described figuratively. Such allegorical descriptions may not be understood by unintelligent men; therefore it is the duty of the student to approach a bona fide spiritual master for the direct explanation.

Lectures

Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures

That is the duty of the student. The spiritual master writes, and it is a duty of the disciple to preach. And if the student is also as pure as the spiritual master, then it becomes very nice
Lecture on SB 1.1.3 -- London, August 19, 1971: So this can be done simply by our discussion of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Therefore it is said here, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. It is the mature fruit of Vedic knowledge. And suka-mukhad amrta-drava-samyutam. This Srimad-Bhagavatam was written by Vyasadeva. And it was spoken for the first time by Sukadeva Gosvami, his son. He wrote this Srimad-Bhagavatam under the instruction of his spiritual master, Narada, and he taught his son, beloved son, Sukadeva Gosvami, that "You preach. I am writing; you preach." That is the duty of the student. The spiritual master writes, and it is a duty of the disciple to preach. And if the student is also as pure as the spiritual master, then it becomes very nice. Suka-mukhat. Suka-mukhad amrta-drava-samyutam.
So it is the duty of the student to offer respect to the bona fide spiritual master three times respect
Lecture on SB 1.2.14-16 -- San Francisco, March 24, 1967: If we cannot please such representative, bona fide representative of Krsna, then there is no hope. There is no hope of our spiritual advancement. Therefore the first duty in the morning is that dhyayan stuvams tasya yasas tri-sandhyam. We have to remember about his glories and we have to offer our respectful obeisances unto him three times at least in a day, or tri-sandhyam. Tri-sandhyam means... In the morning, when the night is being passed, day is beginning, that is first sandhyam, junction. And then when the sun is on the meridian, that is also another junction, and when the day is passing and night is beginning, that is another junction. So it is the duty of the student to offer respect to the bona fide spiritual master three times respect. So serve, mahat-seva, because that will, I mean to say, help me in making advance in spiritual knowledge. Syan mahat-sevaya viprah punya-tirtha-nisevanat. And also by visiting sacred places. So it is not always possible to visit sacred places. It may be very distant place. But when you get chance of a bona fide spiritual master, a great soul, if you try to please him, to satisfy him, that will make you eligible to have taste for krsna-katha, on the topics of Krsna.

Malati: He had sons?

Dr. Singh: Yes, because his wife...

Prabhupada: That is the duty of the student, to give guru-daksina. Whatever he wants, you must give.

Dr. Singh: Like Ekalavya gave his thumb.

Prabhupada: Ah, yes.
