Bhagavad-gita As It Is

BG Chapters 1 - 6

BG 6.20-23, Purport:

Liberation from this material infection does not mean destruction of the original eternal position of the living entity.

BG Chapters 7 - 12

BG 12.18-19, Purport:

Silent does not mean that one should not speak; silent means that one should not speak nonsense.

BG Chapters 13 - 18

BG 15.16, Purport:

Oneness does not mean that they have no individuality, but that there is no disunity.

BG 16.1-3, Purport:

A sannyāsī is supposed to beg from door to door for his livelihood, but this does not mean that he is a beggar.

BG 16.7, Purport:

Now, in the Manu-saṁhitā it is clearly stated that a woman should not be given freedom. That does not mean that women are to be kept as slaves, but they are like children. Children are not given freedom, but that does not mean that they are kept as slaves.

BG 18.5, Purport:

Sannyāsīs should never associate with women, but that does not mean that one who is in the lower stages of life, a young man, should not accept a wife in the marriage ceremony.

BG 18.55, Purport:

Becoming Brahman does not mean that one loses his identity. Devotional service is there, and as long as devotional service exists, there must be God, the devotee, and the process of devotional service.

Srimad-Bhagavatam

SB Canto 1

SB 1.2.7, Purport:

Becoming detached from material things does not mean becoming inert altogether, as men with a poor fund of knowledge think. Naiṣkarma means not undertaking activities that will produce good or bad effects. Negation does not mean negation of the positive. Negation of the nonessentials does not mean negation of the essential. Similarly, detachment from material forms does not mean nullifying the positive form.

SB 1.3.28, Purport:

When in the room small electric bulbs are displayed, it does not mean that the electric powerhouse is limited by the small bulbs. The same powerhouse can supply power to operate large-scale industrial dynamos with greater volts. Similarly, the incarnations of the Lord display limited powers because so much power is needed at that particular time.

SB 1.3.32, Purport:

Even when the gross body is not acting when the living being is in sound sleep, we know that he is within the body by his breathing. So the living being's passing away from the body does not mean that there is no existence of the living soul. It is there, otherwise how can he repeat his births again and again?

SB 1.4.1, Purport:

Personal realization does not mean that one should, out of vanity, attempt to show one's own learning by trying to surpass the previous ācārya.
