Editing Completed Pages

Process

Selecting pages to edit

• Go to the page List of Complete Compilations to find the list of pages completed and ready for editing.
• Select a page to edit by clicking on "edit this page" (second column from the right) - your name will then appear as Editor.
• Click on the page link (first column on the left) to go to the page.
• When you have finished editing the page, go back to the List and check the box "edited" (at the far right).

Note: Do not select pages for which you are listed as the compiler (we want another pair of eyes doing the final editing!)

Navigating the List

• To go forward or backward to other pages in the list, use the green arrows ("previous/next") at upper and lower right of the table.
• To view the list of pages that have already been edited, click on the header "Edited" (far right-hand column).

Checklist for self-editing and third-party editing

Page title

• No errors in spelling or punctuation
• No diacritics in page title

Expressions

• Expressions list present
• Expression highlighted in each quote
• Reasons why expressions won`t highlight:

- Sometimes due to an extra space between words. (Just delete the space)

- When there are quotation marks. (Try and use the words in between the quotation marks as an expression)

- If there is a question mark at the end. (Delete the question mark)

• Be aware of double meaning

Notes from the compiler

• Irrelevant notes should be deleted (e.g. a note about a missing quote which has subsequently been inserted)

• Relevant notes should remain or added(e.g. notes regarding VedaBase queries, bad reference links, explanation of page content, etc)

• Regarding notes, when expression are mentioned with a "|" in between, always write "or" instead of "|", because the "|", and anything written after that will disapear in the notes.

• As a courtesy to our devotees from the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase, we request you to make sure it reads: "VedaBase", not "Vedabase".

Heading

• Consistent throughout page ('with headings' or 'without headings');

• Headings may always be omitted from short, translation-only quotes;

• Should appear in bold green font;

• The heading should be normally less text than the quote.

Content - should:

• read clearly and reasonably easily;
• have no errors in spacing, punctuation, etc.;
• be complete sentences ending with full stop (period);
• contain the expression;
  • Exceptions:
    • when Prabhupada does not use the expression himself; - in this case we place the comment of Srila Prabhupada on the expression.

Vanisource reference link

• The reference given is for the text from which the quote was taken, not for the text immediately following in VedaBase (evident in the quote text, as the reference citation will be seen immediately following the quote)
• Translations are shown as translations and not as purports
• No red error messages showing (e.g. "reference not found", etc)

Vanisource reference errors are not always obvious, but many can be detected during editing if you know what to look for. Click here for more information.

Quote

Common errors

• Initial letter missing from first word
• Letter(s) missing from the end of the last word
• Wiki code appearing with the quote text (in view mode) - [details as to why/how to fix]
• Extra Vanisource reference appearing at the end of the quote - [why/how to fix]
• Diacritics missing (When fixing diacritics, the best course is sometimes to first delete the old quote and save the page. When reinserting the new quote, if it is before other quotes from the same purport, or SB introduction, make sure it is in the right sequence. The new quote will always enter the page last, while it should be in some cases first.
• Speaker not at the left-hand margin
• When there is a disciple reading, or there is someone speaking in a conversation, and after the speaker are brackets, e.g. (), then the speaker moves immediately after the double dots (:), instead of to the beginning of the next line (speaker not at the left-hand margin). One way to resolve this is to delete the space between the speaker and the first bracket, e.g.: "Pradyumna(leads chanting, etc.):", as opposed to: "Pradyumna (leads chanting, etc.):".
• Translation and purport spacing incorrect
• Incorrect Vanisource reference (evident by the reference citation following the quote text)
• In general nothings should be changed from VedaBase, the exception is spacing between paragraphs, especially in lectures, the spacing between paragraphs needs to be deleted most of the time, in order to make the quote look nice.
• One other thing that can be deleted from VedaBase is the asterisk *. This is there in VedaBase to bring up a certain verse or text.

Quotes compiled

Quotes should not be compiled from the following:

• synonyms (word-for-word translation section)
• quotes from an appendix or index
• text segments written by the publishers, not by Srila Prabhupada (e.g. forewords);
• purports from SB Canto 10.14 through Canto 12
• verse summaries at the beginning of LOB, ISO, MM, NBS
• quotes in which the expression appears only in a reading being done by a devotee and is not further commented upon by Prabhupada
• quotes in which the expression is used by someone other than Prabhupada and Prabhupada does not offer further commentary in connection with the expression.

Speakers (section standards)

• Conversations: always include speaker’s name (even if only Prabhupada speaks)
• Lectures: include speakers’ names only if there are other speakers; otherwise, do not have Prabhupada as the speaker
  • exception - Philosophy Discussions: always include speaker’s name (just like Conversations)

Punctuation in quotations

Note: These must be fixed manually by the compiler. Thus, such errors will likely occur frequently.

• For quotes within quotes: be sure that the inner set of marks are singles, not doubles.
• When the text is a quoted segment: be sure that there are quotation marks (inverted commas) at both the beginning and the end of the quote.
• For cited verses: be sure that apostrophes ['] are not showing up as doubles ["].

Examples of errors and how to correct them

Cited Sanskrit verses

• When Sankrit verses are cited at the beginning of a quote, the so called "double dot", e.g.: ":", creates a conflict with the wiki code, because then there are two : after each other, e.g. ::. To avoid this, either delete all the dots, and make the cited verse in the form of a normal sentence, with a comma in the middle, e.g.: "krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih, dvapare paricaryayam kalau tad dhari-kirtanat.". Or add some English to the quote if possible.
