That is Kṛṣṇa's grace. That means in their past life they had been Kṛṣṇa conscious. Some way or other, it was not being fulfilled. Now again the chance is being given. That is stated in Bhagavad-gītā, that yatate ca tato bhūyaḥ saṁsiddhau. The percentage up to which he finished in his last birth, that is not lost. Prabhupāda: What is that? The idea is cheating. The cheating business begins from the government. And why people will not learn to cheat? This is cheating. I am giving you one paper, one hundred rupees, dollars, and you are happy: "I have got so many ..." I am giving you check, ten thousand dollars. You got ten thousand dollars. Now I give you a paper. 1974 Conversations and Morning Walks
Guru-gaurāṅga: We read in the papers, Śrīla Prabhupāda, that they did a survey among the Capucine priests and fifty percent felt that their spiritual life was hampered by the fact that they could not have intimate relations with women. And forty percent felt that they were not allowed enough freedom and that obedience was not good.
Prabhupāda: Not allowed in...?
Guru-gaurāṅga: Enough freedom.
Prabhupāda: What is that freedom?
Yogeśvara: Illicit principles. Sinful principles.1975 Conversations and Morning Walks
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: I read in the papers yesterday that the crime rate has gone up in United States.
Prabhupāda: Yes. That must. If everyone is a criminal, so how the crime rate can decrease?
Harikeśa: Everybody cheats as much as possible, on income tax and everything.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Even President Nixon had cheated on his income tax return, but they caught him later on.
Prabhupāda: No, it is not cheating. It is... The income tax department is a cheating department, so everyone tries to avoid this cheating department. That's it.
Ambarīṣa: Yes. People hire lawyers, very expensive lawyers, just to find loopholes in their tax statements.
Prabhupāda: Yes. The cheating begins from the government. They are giving some paper and asking people, "Here is ten thousand dollars." This is cheating. "I promise to pay." But when the government is failure, where is the promise? Who pays? This is cheating.
Harikeśa: During the Depression that happened. People lined up for miles. During the Depression in America people lined up for miles outside of the bank, and the bank couldn't give them any money. And even if they had money, it wouldn't buy anything.
Prabhupāda: That's it.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Previously the governments all over the world would guarantee that for behind every currency there was certain amount of gold.
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: So if you went and gave that...
Prabhupāda: Forty percent.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: But now it's no more. Now if you go with that currency the government won't give you gold. They've reduced the gold backing behind the currency now. Every day they're reducing because when they want money they just print more notes.
Prabhupāda: And you cannot hold gold also. That is illegal. Somehow or other, even if you secure gold, you cannot keep it.Prabhupāda: These are government buildings. They are not properly maintained. The roads are not properly maintained. So New Delhi light is diminishing. And the shabby motor buses.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: These buses are also so old.
Prabhupāda: Old and creating sound so much.
Tejās: They are losing several crores of rupees every year. One man told me that he rents buses to them, one of the men who came two, three days ago. So, he was telling before, he rents buses to the D.T.C., to the Delhi Transportation Corporation. He rents it to them for a rupee a kilometer and he makes about forty paisa. And even though they are getting it for a rupee a kilometer, they are still losing money on it. He is making profit and they are losing it. Because they sell the spare parts. They're so corrupt.
Prabhupāda: Take away the...
Tejās: Yes, the workers there... There's about sixty percent of their buses only, running. Forty percent are disabled because they are always losing the parts somehow.
Prabhupāda: Just see.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Also, I know, in Delhi, what the people do is... A lot of people, they don't buy the ticket. They give the conductor half the money, and so he lets them go free.
Prabhupāda: Just see. Then where the income? There is no income and there is loss.1976 Conversations and Morning Walks
Hari-śauri: And actually, on the same page, what was that, the percentage scientists are engaged in warfare?
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Forty percent of all the scientists in the world, the estimate is, are engaged in making weapons. And it said that since the end of World War II, six trillion dollars, which is six thousand billion dollars, have been spent on armament in the world.
Hari-śauri: In the West.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: The West, did it say?
Prabhupāda: In India, no money. They can't.... (laughs) They have no sufficient money to eat even. Still they are spending more than fifty percent, fifty-four percent.
Hari-śauri: They estimate there's four hundred thousand so-called scientists working on armament.
Prabhupāda: Working on?
Hari-śauri: Armament. Weapons. Weapon development. Defense. They call it defense measures.
Prabhupāda: Just see. Why defense? Man to man. That means they are dogs. The dogs defend from another dog. Is it not? As soon as they see another dog, (growls) yow, yow, yow. So then where is the defense between man to man?
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: They're worried now that they won't be able to disarm, the article was saying, because, somehow or another, there's going to be a disaster unless there is immediate disarmament. But they don't think it's possible.
Prabhupāda: No. How they can disarm? They have been trained up like dogs to bark and fight. How there can be disarmament?1977 Conversations and Morning Walks
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: That seems to be a big issue now, these smugglers. I notice in the newspapers every day.
Prabhupāda: The smugglers get with money, printed money. Who can check it?
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So printed money should have gold behind it.
Prabhupāda: Yes, that is the theory. What is the rate of economy?
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What is the idea...
Prabhupāda: That is called...
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Gold standard.
Prabhupāda: Not gold standard, but there is a technical name. That means if you print notes, currency note, immediately you have to keep stock of gold in the reserve bank. Reserve. Therefore it is called...
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: The gold reserves.
Prabhupāda: Gold reserve. Gold reserve, yes. At least forty percent.
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What's the idea behind that?
Prabhupāda: What is that? The idea is cheating. The cheating business begins from the government. And why people will not learn to cheat? This is cheating. I am giving you one paper, one hundred rupees, dollars, and you are happy: "I have got so many ..." I am giving you check, ten thousand dollars. You got ten thousand dollars. Now I give you a paper. But it is going on. We have made machinery in such a way that it will go on in hundred rupees or ten thousand rupees. Just like this fixed deposit. I am giving actual money; they are giving a receipt. And it will increase. What increase? The same paper. And gradually inflation is going on. They'll pay at the inflation rate.
