Lecture on BG 4.11 -- Vrndavana, August 3, 1974:

Prabhupāda: Just like if you merge into the ocean... They give this example, generally. So they think that by merging, by dipping into the ocean, they become also ocean. That is not possible. You become controlled by the ocean. Suppose you dip, you dive into the ocean. Does it mean that you become ocean? You become controlled by the ocean. They are under the impression that "I am now a small drop. So if I merge into the ocean, the Brahman, then I'll become Brahman." Is that a very reasonable proposal? You are a drop of water. Scientifically, what is said? Suppose a drop of water is mixed in with the sea water, does it mean the drop becomes sea? What is your scientific explanation? It is also... Eh?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: It has become part of the sea.

Prabhupāda: Part of, remains part of the sea. The part of the sea it was, and it remains part of the sea. The sea water means composition of so many molecules of water or...? What is that?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes.

Prabhupāda: So how the molecules can become the whole sea? Therefore in the Bhagavad-gītā it is said, ye 'nye 'ravindākṣa vimukta-māninas tvayy asta-bhāvād aviśuddha-buddhayaḥ (SB 10.2.32). The Māyāvādī philosophers, they are thinking that "Being merged into the, existence of Brahman, I become Brahman." No, this is a wrong. You cannot become Brahman. You remain the same.

You cannot interpret the word water. Everyone knows what is water means. Where is the question of interpreting?

Room Conversation with Two Lawyers and Guest -- May 22, 1975, Melbourne:

Prabhupāda: Tapaḥ. Tapaḥ, tapasya, austerity. Austerity. Then you have to consult what is the austerity? The austerity is, beginning of austerity is the sex control. That is austerity, brahmacarya. Tapasā brahmacaryeṇa (SB 6.1.13). And that brahmacarya you can observe by following certain rules and regulations, Just like these people are following. In this way everything is there, clear. There is no interpretation. You cannot interpret the word water. Everyone knows what is water means. Where is the question of interpreting? Therefore sometimes reference to the teacher is necessary. Otherwise every word is clear. There is no question of interpretation. Now they are irrelevantly interpreting the first verse of Bhagavad-gītā. Dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre (BG 1.1). So they are interpreting Kurukṣetra means this body. And where is the chance of such interpretation? Kurukṣetra, the land, is still there. Just before coming here I went to Kurukṣetra. So why you should interpret, "Kurukṣetra means this body"?

This is wrong interpretation. The law of interpretation is there when you cannot understand directly. Then you are allowed to interpret. Otherwise there is no necessity of interpretation. But they are unnecessarily interpret for their own purpose. That has become a fashion, to interpret Bhagavad-gītā in his own way.

This water means the shoes, dirt, it will be dirty.

Morning Walk -- December 3, 1975, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: He cannot give up this habit. A dog is made king, but he will jump and lick up the shoes.

Viśāla: (in background) Glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!

Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Jaya. (Break) It is the grace of Providence you do not see that it is properly cleansed.

Viśāla: I'm sorry. I will see to that...

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Viśāla: Your Divine Grace. That is my fault.

Prabhupāda: Why there is water? This water means the shoes, dirt, it will be dirty. So you have no eyes to see?

Viśāla: I am blind. I am sorry. I will see that it is cleaned for you.

Prabhupāda: Then become with eyes. Simply praying, what you will do? Do something practical.

Harikeśa: This is the argument people always throw against us. "Simply praying, what will you do? Do something practical." They say this all the time.

Prabhupāda: Everyone will say that.
