Next acarya

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta

CC Adi-lila

Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, at the time of his departure, requested all his disciples to form a governing body and conduct missionary activities cooperatively. He did not instruct a particular man to become the next ācārya
CC Adi 12.8, Purport: The words daivera karana indicate that by dint of providence, or by God's will, the followers of Advaita Acarya divided into two parties. Such disagreement among the disciples of one acarya is also found among the members of the Gaudiya Matha. In the beginning, during the presence of Om Visnupada Paramahamsa Parivrajakacarya Astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada, all the disciples worked in agreement; but just after his disappearance, they disagreed. One party strictly followed the instructions of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, but another group created their own concoction about executing his desires. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, at the time of his departure, requested all his disciples to form a governing body and conduct missionary activities cooperatively. He did not instruct a particular man to become the next acarya. But just after his passing away, his leading secretaries made plans, without authority, to occupy the post of acarya, and they split into two factions over who the next acarya would be. Consequently, both factions were asara, or useless, because they had no authority, having disobeyed the order of the spiritual master. Despite the spiritual master's order to form a governing body and execute the missionary activities of the Gaudiya Matha, the two unauthorized factions began litigation that is still going on after forty years with no decision.

Lectures

Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures

Śukadeva Gosvāmī is ācārya. Vyāsadeva is ācārya. He's making the next ācārya by teaching him
Lecture on SB 1.7.8 -- Vrndavana, September 7, 1976: So Kali-yuga is a very precarious condition: no knowledge, ignorance, and no nirvrtti. Everyone is in pravrtti. So whatever their condition may be, but if you want actually freedom from this material conditional life, then you should follow acarya. Acaryavan purusah. Acaryopasanam. Krsna is personally acting as acarya. He's coming again as acarya, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He has got so many representatives acarya: Sri Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Nimbarka, Visnu Svami, so many acaryas. Evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. So take lesson from the acaryas. Sukadeva Gosvami is acarya. Vyasadeva is acarya. He's making the next acarya by teaching him-adhyapayam asa, sukam adhyapayam asa -- so that he is becoming acarya. So we have to go the acarya and take lesson.
So Śukadeva Gosvāmī is the next ācārya, but one has to learn from the original ācārya
Lecture on SB 1.7.8 -- Vrndavana, September 7, 1976: So Sukadeva Gosvami is the next acarya, but one has to learn from the original acarya. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. So unless we come to the parampara system, acarya after acarya, there is no right education. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu's private secretary, personal secretary, Svarupa Damodara, he advised, bhagavat para giya bhagavat sthane. If you want to learn Srimad-Bhagavatam, you go to a person whose life is Bhagavatam. Grantha bhagavata and person bhagavata -- both of them bhagavatas. So bhagavat para giya bhagavat sthane. One whose life is Bhagavatam and nothing else, you should learn Bhagavatam from him, not from the professional person who are earning livelihood by reading or reciting Srimad-Bhagavatam. That will not be effective. You have to find out like Sukadeva Gosvami. Then this study of Srimad-Bhagavatam will be effective.
This is called paramparā system. You cannot jump over to the superior guru, neglecting the next ācārya, immediate next ācārya
Lecture on SB 1.15.30 -- Los Angeles, December 8, 1973: So if you want to understand Bhagavad-gita, then we must understand in the same way as the person who directly heard from. This is called parampara system. Suppose I have heard something from my spiritual master, so I speak to you the same thing. So this is parampara system. You cannot imagine what my spiritual master said. Or even if you read some books, you cannot understand unless you understand it from me. This is called parampara system. You cannot jump over to the superior guru, neglecting the next acarya, immediate next acarya. Just like our, this Gau..., Caitanya Mahaprabhu's cult; we cannot understand Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly. It is not possible. We have to understand through the Gosvamis.

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Lectures

Just like a critical student under a professor, he becomes a first-class professor, similarly, a person who is a very rigid student of bona fide ācārya, he becomes next ācārya
Lecture on CC CC Madhya-lila 20.144-146 -- New York, December 1, 1966: So Krsna also, as spiritual master of Arjuna, He played. He is the original acarya. Then acarya's disciple becomes acarya when he assimilates the knowledge received from bona fide acarya. So he becomes bona fide to act as an acarya. Evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. Acarya means one who has become a rigid disciple of his acarya. Just like a critical student under a professor, he becomes a first-class professor, similarly, a person who is a very rigid student of bona fide acarya, he becomes next acarya. That is the... Evam parampara-praptam. This is the disciplic succession. So as in the Bhagavad-gita five thousand years before Lord Krsna said, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam: [Bg. 15.15] "The purpose of all Vedic literatures, the conclusion, is that, to understand Me, Krsna..." By understanding Krsna, immediate liberation... That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita

Purports to Songs

After the six Gosvāmīs, the next ācārya was Śrīnivāsa Ācārya. So he's also praying Śrīnivāsa Ācārya
Purport to Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu: Then he prays to the Gosvamis. Ha ha svarupa, sanatana, rupa, raghunatha. My dear Gosvami Prabhus, svarupa. Svarupa was Svarupa Damodara was personal secretary of Lord Caitanya. He was always keeping with Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and whatever He wanted, he immediately arranged for that. Two personal attendants, Svarupa Damodara and Govinda, they were always, constantly with Lord Caitanya. So Narottama dasa Thakura also praying Svarupa Damodara. And then the Gosvamis. The next disciples of Lord Caitanya were the six Gosvamis: Sri Rupa, Sri Sanatana, Sri Bhatta Raghunatha, Sri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, Jiva Gosvami, and Raghunatha dasa Gosvami. These six Gosvamis were directly instructed by Lord Caitanya for spreading this movement of Krsna consciousness. Narottama dasa Thakura is praying also their mercy. And after the six Gosvamis, the next acarya was Srinivasa Acarya. So he's also praying Srinivasa Acarya.

Conversations and Morning Walks

1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Why this Gauḍīya Maṭha failed? Because they tried to become more than guru. He, before passing away, he gave all direction and never said that "This man should be the next ācārya."
Room Conversation -- August 16, 1976, Bombay: Prabhupāda: Why this Gaudiya Matha failed? Because they tried to become more than guru. He, before passing away, he gave all direction and never said that "This man should be the next acarya." But these people, just after his passing away they began to fight, who shall be acarya. That is the failure. They never thought, "Why Guru Maharaja gave us instruction so many things, why he did not say that this man should be acarya?" They wanted to create artificially somebody acarya and everything failed. They did not consider even with common sense that if Guru Maharaja wanted to appoint somebody as acarya, why did he not say? He said so many things, and this point he missed? The real point? And they insist upon it. They declared some unfit person to become acarya. Then another man came, then another, acarya, another acarya. So better remain a foolish person perpetually to be directed by Guru Maharaja. That is perfection. And as soon as he learns the Guru Maharaja is dead, "Now I am so advanced that I can kill my guru and I become guru." Then he's finished.
