Conversations and Morning Walks

1969 Conversations and Morning Walks

Lord Caitanya Play Told to Tamala Krsna -- August 4, 1969, Los Angeles:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Maybe you should, you must have your massage now. It's time.

Prabhupāda: What is time?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It is twenty-five minutes to uh... Maybe we can do a little more. Twenty-five minutes to twelve. Maybe a tiny bit more.

Prabhupāda: You can do, you can ask me for fifteen minutes more.

1972 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- March 12, 1972, Vrndavana:

Devotee: You want to take massage now, Srila Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: So give some prasādam.

Dr. Kapoor: You are observing Ekādaśī today?

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Dr. Kapoor: Ekādaśī today?

Prabhupāda: Ekādaśī? (indistinct)

Dr. Kapoor: So you are going for that piece of land, that...

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversations -- April 22, 1972, Japan:

Prabhupāda: So send Nanda Kumāra to give me massage. I will be ready.

Sudāmā: Śrīla Prabhupāda, we set the date of installation for the third, next Wednesday, beginning from 4:30 in the afternoon.

Prabhupāda: 4:30?

Sudāmā: Yes.

Prabhupāda: All right.

Sudāmā: And is there any special thing we should make, prepare for the installation? I think the other... This one boy Steven is taking initiation on that day.

Prabhupāda: So that will be nice.

Bhānu: Śrīla Prabhupāda? Is it all right to offer the Deity condensed milk that is already condensed?

Prabhupāda: Hm? No. Call... Where is Nanda Kumāra? I shall take massage. (end)

1973 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation with Dr. Christian Hauser, Psychiatrist -- September 10, 1973, Stockholm:

Prabhupāda: (indistinct) Bhāgavata verse, janmādy asya (SB 1.1.1), asya janmādi (indistinct) concise word but volumes of meanings. Volumes. Each word is like that. Vidyā bhāgavata-vali(?). Therefore one's learning is complete when he reads Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Otherwise he remains imperfect, in spite of all learning. Janmādy asya yataḥ (SB 1.1.1), from where? Now the creation of this cosmic world, from where? But you do not know from where. This is explained in Bhāgavatam. Paraṁ satyaṁ dhīmahi. That is actually true. In this way simply if you analyze one verse, you'll find each word is full of volumes of meaning. Janmādy asya yataḥ, anvayāt (SB 1.1.1). Like the creation, anvayāt, directly and indirectly, itarataś cārtheṣu, in the matter of understanding, abhijñaḥ. Abhijñaḥ means completely cognizant. That is the Absolute Truth. He knows everything—how this universe is created, how it is maintained, how it annihilated, directly and indirectly. Just like, I always, regular, everyday thing, when I am massaged by my student, I see so many veins so I think that I claim, "This is my leg," but I do not know what are these veins. Directly I know this is my leg, but indirectly I do not know how this leg is working with these veins and nerves and muscles. I do not know.

Room Conversation -- September 21, 1973, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: (laughing) It is due to Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī. Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja (CC Madhya 19.151). So you can give me massage. Thank you very much. Now you have got very, very great responsible work. I will die. You will live. Kīrtir yasya sa jīvati. But I will not die.

Room Conversation -- November 1, 1973, New Delhi:

Prabhupāda: Parāṭā can do.

Śrutakīrti: Yes, she is...

Prabhupāda: So you can give me massage now.

Brahmānanda: Massage him.

Śrutakīrti: Yes. All right.

Brahmānanda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Nama oṁ viṣṇu-pādāya...

Prabhupāda: Sarvatra vasanava gatya (?). So if this advertisement attracts some people, then I can remain here.

Brahmānanda: Yes.

Prabhupāda: To organize this.

1974 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- February 13, 1974, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Then I was taking Kavirāja's medicine. I took it from here, that Yogendranātha. That gave me good strength, and massage the body. Not taking bath in cold water. In this way, somehow or other, still going on.

Dr. Kapoor: Now I think you would be more useful if you took more rest, spend as little as what Hare Kṛṣṇa...

Prabhupāda: What? Rest, (Hindi)

Dr. Kapoor: No, even then, (Hindi)

Prabhupāda: (Hindi)

Dr. Kapoor: Even if you go by plane.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Morning Walk -- March 6, 1974, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes. Machine for cleansing, so many things.

Devotee: And for nail rubbing also.

Prabhupāda: Yes. For massaging. Everything.

Siddha-svarūpānanda: They have for brushing the teeth.

Prabhupāda: Oh, very...

Siddha-svarūpānanda: You just hold the toothbrush and the machine makes it go up and down.

Prabhupāda: Just see.

Morning Walk -- March 9, 1974, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Yes. Therefore we have temporary situated mandira in the same building. We cannot stop our worship. That is not possible. Because one cannot go upon the mandira, because the Lord is now being worshiped within the residence, it does not mean we can stop His worship. Worship must continue in any condition, apratihatā, without being impeded by any rules and regulations. This is called rāga-mārga. Vidhi-mārga, and there is rāga-mārga. Vidhi-mārga means under rules and regulations, and rāga-mārga means out of love. That is another thing. There is another instance. Govinda was personal servant of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. So after His dinner, Govinda used to give Him massage on the leg. So one day Caitanya Mahāprabhu fell down on the ground and began to sleep on the door. So Govinda was to give massage to His leg. So he crossed Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and began to...

Guest (1): Walk.

Prabhupāda: No, not walk. Giving massage. So He was sleeping. So at two or three o'clock when Caitanya, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu became awake: "Govinda, you are sitting here. You have not taken your dinner?" "No, sir." "Why?" "Now, how could I cross you and take my dinner?" "Then how you came?" "No, that is for Your massaging. (laughter) But I cannot cross You for my dinner."

Room Conversation -- March 16, 1974, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yes. Since then I have no stroke.

Guest: You still have massages every day?

Prabhupāda: Yes. We have massages. One day him, one day Acyutānanda. (break) What philosophy you are following?

Guest: Pardon?

Prabhupāda: Which philosophy you are following?

Guest: Uh, Buddha philosophy, and uh, Vedānta and uh, Kṛṣṇa philosophy. I have a Tibetan teacher now, (indistinct).

Prabhupāda: He also teaches Kṛṣṇa?

Guest: Uh, he teaches uh...

Prabhupāda: Buddha.

Morning Walk -- April 20, 1974, Hyderabad:

Mahāṁsa: Does he get second initiation?

Prabhupāda: Everything he will get.

Mahāṁsa: He gets.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Second initiation means recognized: "Now he has become fully competent Vaiṣṇava." Just like master is teaching the servant, "Now you give massage in this way, this way." But that does not mean he has become servant.

Room Conversation -- May 20, 1974, Vrndavana:

Gurudāsa: You can't eat money.

Prabhupāda: Ultimately that is the... (break) ...somehow or other, but it must be properly utilized. Who will give me massage?

Devotee (2): Oh, Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja.

Prabhupāda: So ask him. (break) ...money.

Gurudāsa: My point of..., you can't eat money means that if it is in the bank earning interest...

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Gurudāsa: My point was if it is in the bank earning interest, we may die at any moment, so what is the point of in the bank? But if we have some land and utilizing it, it is a better investment.

Prabhupāda: First you purchase, then we shall make program. For the time being, purchase. Actually that is money.

Gurudāsa: Yes.

Room Conversation -- May 20, 1974, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: From yesterday lost my appetite.

Devotee (3): Because I was massaging you from yesterday.

Prabhupāda: (chuckles) No, that's not. It is Kṛṣṇa's grace to have less appetite, I think. Less sleep, less appetite, it is good. Nidrāhāra-vihārakādi-vijitau **. They conquered over, but I have not conquered it. By Kṛṣṇa's grace, it is reduced.

Devotee (2): May I have the key to the almirah, put these books away?

Prabhupāda: Yes. You have got the duplicate key? So I can take this key?

Gurudāsa: Yes, I've given it to Guṇārṇava just now.

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Gurudāsa: I've given it to Guṇārṇava this morning, the duplicate.

Prabhupāda: Oh.

1975 Conversations and Morning Walks

Morning Walks -- June 18-19, 1975, Honolulu:

Siddha-svarūpa: There's time. There's time to take a walk.

Śrutakīrti: You would have to take massage in the morning, so I don't there would be ample time.

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break) Writing advertising, "World famous...?"

Devotee: "World famous steak and lobster." It's a restaurant.

Siddha-svarūpa: It's different advertisement. (break) Here it is not allowed, so the companies are going to use cars.

Prabhupāda: (break) ...the samosa?

Devotee: Lilananda.

Prabhupāda: It is very nice. Why don't you make it in the morning?

Devotee: For breakfast?

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break) ...khalu sarvataḥ syāt. Viṣaya means sense enjoyment. Now, that boy and the girl, they're taking dogs. The dog is also male and female, and the man is male and female. So viṣaya means sense enjoyment. The sex enjoyment is both; the dogs and the man, they will have. But the man can get Kṛṣṇa; the dog cannot get Kṛṣṇa. That is the difference. Viṣaya, that sex enjoyment, is available both for the dogs and the man. But the man can achieve Kṛṣṇa; the dog cannot. That is special. Viṣaya khalu sarvataḥ syāt. (break) ...of eating, sleeping, mating. That is available in every life. (break) ...another passage is there in Prema-vivarta, janame janame sabe pitā mātā pāya: "In every life, one can get father and mother." Kṛṣṇa guru nahi mile bhajahun re bhāi(?): "But Kṛṣṇa and guru cannot be had in every life." That is only in human life. Otherwise, as soon as there is birth, there is father and mother. Either you become human being or tiger or snake or bird, the father mother is there. But the spiritual father and Kṛṣṇa, that can be obtained in human life, not in every life.

Morning Walk -- June 21, 1975, Los Angeles:

Prabhupāda: What time do you want to go there?

Jayatīrtha: Perhaps around... When is convenient? Ten o'clock? Before the massage?

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break) ...fed up with so-called religion. Therefore they're angry. But when they find this is real, genuine, everyone will accept.

Morning Walk -- June 22, 1975, Los Angeles:

Prabhupāda: The woman gives massage?

Revatīnandana: Yes. Always advertising, "Beautiful young girls to massage you."

Dharmādhyakṣa: This is open prostitution now. They advertise very, very, very badly.

Bahulāśva: We had a hearing in Berkeley for our temple, whether or not we could live there, and some neighbors were saying that "These Hare Kṛṣṇa people are no good because they don't have any sex life and don't take any intoxication."

Jayatīrtha: "They hate sex, they hate women, they hate drugs..."

Bahulāśva: They said, "They are too pure. They will make this whole place... They'll take over this whole place."

Devotee: "They'll convert the whole neighborhood."

Dharmādhyakṣa: "They're trying to subvert and infiltrate our philosophy into their neighborhood."

Prabhupāda: So they are coming to know what we are. (laughter)

Morning Walk -- July 27, 1975, San Diego:

Prabhupāda: (laughing) You are so rich, you can do it, continually festival: "Come on. Take prasādam. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." Just like... What is that? You told me? Continual massage...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massage parlor, twenty-four hours.

Prabhupāda: (laughing) Twenty-four hours. Similarly, twenty-four hours, free prasādam: "Come on." But they are not hungry.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Not for that. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...trunk as fat as this is, very long, where I saw it? Maybe... Mexico, I think. (break)

Rāmeśvara: ...trees that are so fat that you can drive your car through it. They have made an opening...

Prabhupāda: Ācchā?

Rāmeśvara: And you can drive your car through it.

Jayatīrtha: Redwood tree. Those are the trees that are so old, sometimes five thousand years old.

Prabhupāda: Taravaḥ kiṁ na jīvanti (SB 2.3.18) . Bhāgavata says that "You are trying to prolong your life. Don't you know that trees live more and more years than yourself?" Taravaḥ kiṁ na jīvanti. So what is the use of such living? A tree standing for five thousand years, what is the use of such living? Therefore, those who are trying to live for many years, they are being instructed, taravaḥ kiṁ na jīvanti (SB 2.3.18) . They are also living being. And what is the use of living? First of all, that... For the same purpose, eating, sleeping, mating, and living for five thousand years, ten thousand years, what is the use? Taravaḥ kiṁ na jīvanti, bhastrāḥ kiṁ na śvasanty uta. (break) This park is very nice. (break) ... śunīcena. We are all trampling. There is no protest.

Morning Walk -- July 31, 1975, Dallas:

Prabhupāda: Not very all right. Constantly change of hand is not good.

Brahmānanda: Yes. Upendra can cook for you? Just like Śrutakīrti, he used to use the cooker. He would put up the vegetables and then give massage. And then after massage he would just chaunce the vegetables. He was able to do everything himself.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Everyone was doing that. So we shall go or wait?

Satsvarūpa: After New Orleans, all your stops are in northern. Detroit and Canada. It won't be so hot.

Morning Walk -- October 17, 1975, Johannesburg:

Prabhupāda: The government never objected to our movement. Never. I never met any objection from government side. Neither even Christian priestly side. I never met any objection. They understand that "He is doing something."

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Only from your Godbrothers. (laughter)

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break)

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: You don't like the sunshine so much.

Prabhupāda: Only at the time of massage. (break)

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: ...Vedic statement or is it just preference?

Prabhupāda: No, that is my personal. During winter it is pleasing, of course, sunshine.

Morning Walk -- November 1, 1975, Nairobi:

Prabhupāda: "They say. They say." You don't drink water, and when you give me massage why do you perspire? You did not drink water. This is practical.

Brahmānanda: But formerly I had drunk water.

Prabhupāda: No, formerly, three hundred years, you had some water; therefore the water is coming out. This is all nonsense. Seven generation before my great-grandfather ate some ghee, and still I have got the smell. (laughter) It is that argument. Huh? This kind of argument has no value. Water is... You can create water from your body. What is there? You are a doctor. What is your...? Eh? Medical men they are. No? Water is created. How the blood is created? He did not drink blood. This is nonsense argument. How we create blood? It is becoming. You do not know how it is, but you have got such potency that blood is being created. You even do not know how the blood is being done, but it is being. That is inconceivable energy. There are so many secretions. They are coming within the body.

Morning Walk -- November 24, 1975, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: No. Viṣṇu Svāmī-sampradāya, different. That is Rudra-sampradāya. And Rāmānujācārya is Śrī-sampradāya. The Vallabhācāryas, they belong to Viṣṇu Svāmī. We belong to Madhva-sampradāya. Four ācāryas.

Yaśomatīnandana: Who was the originator of Śrī-sampradāya?

Prabhupāda: Hm? Lakṣmīji. Pāda-sevanam. Śravaṇa kīrtana viṣṇo smaraṇa pāda-sevanam. Lakṣmīji is always engaged in massaging the feet of Lord Viṣṇu.

Yaśomatīnandana: Rāmānujācārya is the biggest in line?

Prabhupāda: Yes. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Jaya.

1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- April 23, 1976, Melbourne:

Prabhupāda: Yes. And quote from Bhagavad-gītā. Show pictures.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Would you like to take your massage now, Śrīla Prabhupāda? (break)

Guest (2): ...interesting. I see Elder Forester(?) in myself. We feel that we're called to God through a living prophet ourselves. And our feeling is in our own hearts we feel that we have a living feeling in what we call a testimony of Christ. And we feel that he is our savior and that he did atone for the sins of the world. And we were wondering what your feelings were about this.

Prabhupāda: Our feeling is direct, carrying the orders of God. The direct orders are there, and we have to carry. Ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlanam (CC Madhya 19.167), favorably to carry out the order of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa means God.

Morning Walk -- June 7, 1976, Los Angeles:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Before the massage.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That's right time.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: ...widespread, Śrīla Prabhupāda, very widespread. Now I'm afraid about it being in New York, because one of the leaders has been.... I just found out that he's one of the leaders. He's been in New York for about three weeks on his way to London, and he's a pūj..., he has his own Deities which he has on the altar, which means he's talking to our pūjārīs. I am, I have to get back there as soon as possible to see. They have like a newsletter they send out all over the world.

Room Conversation with Ambarisa and Catholic Priest -- June 14, 1976, Detroit:

Prabhupāda: Govindam ādi-puruṣam. So that's all right, "Govinda's."

Ambarīṣa: OK. (pause)

Śrutikīrti: Hari-śauri looks like he can give a very good massage. He looks like he can give a very good massage.

Prabhupāda: Mmm. Hari-śauri's one defect is he cannot cook. (laughter) Otherwise he is duplicate. Except cooking. He knows very good cooking.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: He can eat though. He can eat prasāda.

Śrutikīrti: So I can travel and cook?

Prabhupāda: Cooking and.... A young man must eat. Why one should be like me?

Śrutikīrti and Ambarīṣa: Jaya. Jaya, Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. (break) (tape continues after guest's entrance)

Stansky: ...the very best.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- June 28, 1976, New Vrindaban:

Prabhupāda: Rādhāvallabha, just see, young boy, how he's working hard. You were doing also. You were doing so many things at a time. In Bombay you were doing herculean task, everywhere. He knows how to cook, how to give massage, how to... Yes. How to keep accounts, yes. Qualified. How to cook. Everything. So, may Kṛṣṇa save you. What can I say more?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: This evening, Śrīla Prabhupāda, we are arranging that you can see the film a little bit later in your room. Perhaps you would like to sit outside in the garden?

Prabhupāda: Very nice. New York, how is everything going?

Rādhāvallabha: Very nice.

Prabhupāda: So we have to go outside?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: (aside:) The chair is there? There are some people who have come, if you'd like to...

Prabhupāda: Yes, I'll go. So you have given them some prasādam?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: We arranged for that.

Arrival Room Conversation -- July 2, 1976, Washington, D.C.:

Prabhupāda: Nice.

Vṛṣākapi: There's a swimming pool here, Prabhupāda. You have a garden by the pool; you can take your massage there.

Prabhupāda: This is your own house? What you have paid for it?

Rūpānuga: Well, now we are leasing with option to buy. We have ten-year lease, we can purchase anytime before ten years.

Prabhupāda: Price is fixed?

Rūpānuga: Six hundred fifty thousand. But all money paid for rent goes toward purchase.

Prabhupāda: That's nice.

Room Conversation -- July 9, 1976, New York:

Hari-śauri: (to devotee:) I have to set up for massage. You can do the machine? It's recording now.

Prabhupāda: Very nice sitting place.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Above all the noise in New York City, too.

Prabhupāda: Huh?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa;: It's not so noisy up here.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Pālikā wants to ask you something.

Pālikā: Would you like to take fruit now, or prasādam as regular?

Prabhupāda: No, no, I have taken breakfast. So Bali-mardana Prabhu, doing all right?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Those are your servants' quarters, and the kitchen, and there's also a dresser in your bedroom.

Prabhupāda: There is any closet with lock?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Oh, yes. This closet here is a walk-in closet. Small room with a lock. You also have a cabinet that locks. It's a big walk-in closet.

Prabhupāda: Oh, that's nice. So I shall again stay in New York? Nice place.

Room Conversation -- July 9, 1976, New York:

Prabhupāda: Not only this portion.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: No, all the way round.

Bali-mardana: The long part is in the front. It goes all the way down.

Prabhupāda: I shall take my massage.

Devotees: Jaya, Śrīla Prabhupāda. (end)

Room Conversation -- July 17, 1976, New York:

Prabhupāda: So you suggest.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Well, it depends on a number of things. One thing is your rest. After taking massage you take prasādam, and then your resting period. Another thing is how long you want to ride along on the cart. It depends on... I think it should depend on... I can't... No one can make that decision. We're agreeable to anything that you suggest. Devotees are enlivened simply that you're here in New York with us.

Prabhupāda: So at two o'clock you start?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Right.

Prabhupāda: You want me at the starting point?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: We want you to do simply what you feel would be best.

Prabhupāda: No, no. What is the best? Starting point, my presence required?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Well, it's not a question of required. I mean that's a very exciting time, you know, but I wouldn't say it's required. We're going to start. One way or the other, we have to start the parade. It's exciting at that time, but you could also join midway. Suppose you could also join at Thirty-fourth Street instead of Fifty-ninth Street. Halfway is about Thirty-fourth Street. So you could join there.

Prabhupāda: That will be better.

Room Conversation -- July 18, 1976, New York:

Prabhupāda: Yes, this is fact. Let me see what Kṛṣṇa desires. The roof is very nice.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes.

Prabhupāda: For open air.

Hari-śauri: It's very good for massage.

Prabhupāda: And the view of the river is very healthy. If you can see the river from your house, it is to be understood that quarter is very nice. If you can see sky from your room, then it is understood the room is very nice.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Well, all these things are here.

Prabhupāda: We can see from the room the river.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes.

Prabhupāda: Otherwise from the roof. So it is very nice.

Morning Walk -- July 20, 1976, New York:

Prabhupāda: How life is coming by force? And they say there is no soul.

Hari-śauri: You made the point the other day during massage that even though our building is twelve stories high and it's made of steel and concrete, still, there's small plants growing straight out of the cement.

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break) They do not go to the sun planet. What is the reason?

Tripurāri: They say that no life there.

Prabhupāda: Again life, no life.

Tripurāri: They think it's too hot for life to exist there.

Prabhupāda: So how Kṛṣṇa was there?

Rādhāvallabha: They don't believe that.

Prabhupāda: So how can I believe you? If you don't believe Kṛṣṇa, shall I have to believe you?

Rādhāvallabha: They have calculated that as soon as you come within a certain amount, a billion miles of the sun...

Prabhupāda: That is you. That is you, not Kṛṣṇa. That is the difference between you and Kṛṣṇa.

Conversation at House of Ksirodakasayi dasa -- July 25, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: Just see. How bogus he was. No, when I go to met in Hollywood that, in the beginning that Prabhavananda, the rascal said that "Ramakrishna was formerly Caitanya Mahāprabhu." He began like that. Then I could understand "What a rascal he is, and I have to waste my time." So I did not answer anything. I said, "Thank you very much for your meeting," and I went out. This Ramakrishna rascal's first proposal was that Ramakrishna Thakura was formerly Caitanya. This is beginning. He was so rascal. (pause) (sounds of massage?) This is framework house. If some of the swamis may have said, they say that "Why you call us rascal and so many things?" So you say that "We are not calling you. Kṛṣṇa says. So we are pushing Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So we have to repeat what Kṛṣṇa has said. That's it. We cannot help it. Kṛṣṇa says na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ (BG 7.15). So you are not Kṛṣṇa conscious; therefore you must be mūḍha."

Conversation with George Harrison -- July 26, 1976, London:
Prabhupāda: "If the wife of the spiritual master is young, a young brahmacārī should not allow her to care for his hair, massage his body with oil, or bathe him with affection like a mother."
Conversation with George Harrison -- July 26, 1976, London:
Prabhupāda: "Brahmacārīs or grhasthas who have taken the vow of celibacy as described above should not indulge in the following: applying powder or ointment to the eyes, massaging the head with oil, massaging the body with the hands, seeing a woman or painting a woman's picture, eating meat, drinking wine, decorating the body with flower garlands, smearing scented ointment on the body, or decorating the body with ornaments. These they should give up."
Room Conversation -- August 2, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Harikeśa: And this is Ax Brand Universal Oil, supposed to be for massages or something.

Prabhupāda: Chinese?

Harikeśa: (indistinct) This is Chinese.

Hari-śauri: It's got different..., says menthol crystal, peppermint oil, eucalyptol oil, menthol salicilate, oil of lavender, chloroform BP, camphor powder, and white oil.

Prabhupāda: What is for?

Harikeśa: Supposed to be for massaging.

Hari-śauri: It's supposed to help the muscles.

Prabhupāda: And what is this?

Hari-śauri: Nutmeg oil. This is the one I was telling you about.

Prabhupāda: They're all selling all this?

Hari-śauri: No, this is not ours.

Evening Darsan -- August 10, 1976, Tehran:

Atreya Ṛṣi: No, you stand and do it. Do it but do it strongly. Or you can do it like this, just comfortable. Comfortable. He was used to getting massage from woman.

Prabhupāda: Acchā?

Atreya Ṛṣi: Yes, this is known. He used to have women devotees who...

Prabhupāda: No, it was known to everyone. And that was remarked that his granddaughter, I mean granddaughter-in-law, he was always accompanied, resting his head on their shoulder, he was walking. That was remarked by...

Atreya Ṛṣi: Yes, but they were not his granddaughter, his relative, and it was the wife of a relative. And he believed in honesty.

Prabhupāda: He was very sexually inclined. That is written by him. While his father was dying, he was engaged in sex with his wife.

Morning Walk -- August 12, 1976, Tehran:

Prabhupāda: Future you cannot plan. That is the foolishness. That is another obstinate rascaldom. Future is not in your hand. You cannot plan. That is going on. They are planning so many things for future, but it is being baffled. So many schemes, so many there are. Our, in India there is a planning commission, after independence. So whatever they did, all failure. All failure. And now it is chaos. That Guljanajana(?) Nanda you know? He was one of the prominent member of the planning commission. He was very important member in the central government, home member, planning commission, president and so on, so on. Nowadays he is loitering on the street, coming me to talk as ordinary man. You have seen? You were giving me massage on the roof and he was sitting?

Hari-śauri: Yes. He's just trying to make some name and fame now by becoming a pious man.

Prabhupāda: So he's coming to me. He was very big man. Home member Ran Nitola(?) was president.

Room Conversation -- August 12, 1976, Tehran:

Prabhupāda: Some arrangement he may make some profit. Honest business. Not that by cheating get something. That is not good. If he wants money, let him take.

Ātreya Ṛṣi: Have you had your massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: No, I'll come back and do.

Hari-śauri: We have to leave soon.

Ātreya Ṛṣi: We have to leave soon, in fifteen minutes.

Prabhupāda: Yes, you can go. Or you can leave ten minutes.

Ātreya Ṛṣi: So we can get ready to go. And we can get these formulas from you later.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- August 17, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: (Bengali) That's all. Stop now.

Harikeśa: I was just going to say you should take massage now. I was just going to say it's time for massage.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Harikeśa: Can I tell you about the bank? Punjab National Bank is down the street, and we have our temple account there.

Prabhupāda: Oh, Punjab National Bank is there.

Harikeśa: So how much do you want to deposit?

Prabhupāda: That I have to count.

Room Conversation -- August 22, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: And one Englishman is giving me massage. This rascal criticizing. But they have come to me for money? They are poor or they are illiterate fools? They have come to me for money or some material gain? No. Unless they are convinced about the spiritual gain, why they should give me such service? They have no eyes to see.

Gargamuni: No, because in India, many Indians, when they approach a guru, they want something. But we didn't have to approach you for anything.

Prabhupāda: That is the speciality. The guru... One should go to guru to serve him as menial servant. That is acceptance of guru. That is required. Nīcavat. Nīca, nīca means menial. Just like menial servant, he does everything. Similarly, to live with guru means to serve him as a menial servant. That is Vedic injunction. Nīcavat. You should not be puffed up, that "I am coming from such royal family, I am coming from such rich family." And that tendency is trained up from the childhood. A child does not know. Just like Pradyumna's son. You can engage him in any menial service. He does not discriminate. He's trained up. So this is gurukula. Very word is used, nīcavat. He gives service to the guru just like a menial servant. And this training being given from the childhood, he does not know what is low or what is high. His spiritual master asks to do something... Even Kṛṣṇa went to the forest to collect some dry wood.

Room Conversation -- September 4, 1976, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Caraṇāravindam. That the Englishmen were ruling over us. Now here is English boy, he's giving me massage and fanning me. What is the reason? Unless he feels something obligation, that "He has given us Kṛṣṇa," what business he has got? Not for him, for all of you, to give so valuable free service, unless there is this sense. What do you think? You have no obligation. You are European, American. I am Indian. It is through this via media Kṛṣṇa. This is practical. Therefore Kṛṣṇa is God. Yaṁ labdhvā cāparaṁ lābhaṁ manyate nādhikaṁ tataḥ. Because they have got sense that "We have got God," therefore they are feeling so much obliged. Kṛṣṇa is God, there is no doubt about it. It is not yet ready?

Hari-śauri: They're making a plate now.

Prabhupāda: Viśvambhara is there?

Hari-śauri: Yes.

Prabhupāda: So we shall follow strictly. Here is God. Take. Because if you are serious after God, here is God, take Kṛṣṇa. This is our philosophy. Hm? What is the answer? If he's serious about God. I think this paper wrote that, that Village? "We thought God is dead."

Press Conference -- December 16, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: It is allegation. And they are so fools that the Americans, they have come here to become Vaiṣṇava and starvation and they have become religious. They have no food there, and they have come to me and they have no dress, they have... And this boy is English boy. He is giving me massage as if he's a poor man's son. This is... Is he poor man's son? Why he is giving massage? We are Indian, poor Indian. He is not in need of money. He even buys his own cloth. The other day I was chastising him, "Why you are purchasing? You take." "No, I have got money." Just see. This is their position.

Dr. Ramachandra: May we take leave?

Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Yes. (Hindi—jokes about CIA) (laughter)

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- January 8, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Bhikṣa-mātā. Bhikṣa means giving alms. At least every woman becomes a bhikṣa-mātā, alms-giving mother. This is system. My mother was bhikṣa-mātā to one brāhmaṇa. He is the son of our priest. Family priest, family guru, vipra-mātā, still in Hindu family, the system is still going on, brāhmaṇa visiting daily, informing, "Today is this tithi. The duty is this, the sunrise at this time is..." This is brāhmaṇa's duty, to go to the neighboring householders, and whatever they give, take. That is brāhmaṇa's art. At the same time, they keep some medicine. Every house there is some ailments. They'll give some medicine. Still. Now it is not so... In our childhood every day some brāhmaṇa visitor would come. So I will take massage like yesterday, early.

Morning Darsana and Room Conversation Ramkrishna Bajaj and friends -- January 9, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Hm? So I can go and take my massage now. (Hindi)

Girirāja: Actually we could show the book movie. I don't think anyone here has seen it.

Prabhupāda: Ah. Yes.

Morning Darsana and Room Conversation Ramkrishna Bajaj and friends -- January 9, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: (laughs) Yes, it is magic. It is magic undoubtedly. But I never created any gold or some other... And neither I do know it, how to do it, although there is no scarcity of gold in my pocket. I started this business with forty rupees. So I'll go to take massage. Thank you very much. (Hindi) ...prasāda. Show. Show the film. You are going to show?

Girirāja: Haridāsa took the projector, so I don't know when it's coming.

Prabhupāda: Why he has? (end)

Conversation and Instruction On New Movie -- January 13, 1977, Allahabad:

Prabhupāda: Yes, the nine devotional process and how, by each process, one becomes perfect, just like Parīkṣit Mahārāja, simply hearing, and Śukadeva Gosvāmī, simply chanting, reciting Bhāgavatam. So both of them got salvation. Lakṣmī, she is simply pāda-sevanam, giving massage to the lotus feet of the Lord. Arjuna simply made friendship with Kṛṣṇa. Hanuman simply worked as a hard servant. He doesn't know what He is... "Lord Rāmacandra wants it." Then it is done. Jump over. He does not know any philosophy. He has got bodily strength, so whatever Rāmacandra says, he'll do. He was asked to bring that medicine for Lakṣmaṇa. He did not know where to find it. "Take this whole mountain." (laughter) He was not intelligent. "Fight! We have to fight with Rāvaṇa. Then block his whole city by throwing stones and trees and dirt." Everything became blocked. They could not move. So in one side he is born of animal life, he had no higher intelligence, but his staunch desire, that "I shall serve Lord Rāmacandra..." By that... Only this desire made him perfect. Dāsyam. Śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ (SB 7.5.23), so smaraṇam. Prahlāda Mahārāja, five years old boy, how he could protest against such a powerful demon father? He was simply thinking of Kṛṣṇa, "All right, my father is punishing me. What can I do?" Simply absorbed, smaraṇam.

Room Conversation -- January 19, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: Yes. Paralyzed, yes.

Gargamuni: Left side. And this is most dangerous, the doctor said. Maybe for swelling we can increase the massaging to three times a day.

Hari-śauri: That's what this guy told me, not to massage very much.

Gargamuni: Oh.

Hari-śauri: At least not while the swelling is there. Actually that medicine that Shiv Sharma gave you, that was reduced. I don't think this homeopathic medicine is any good.

Prabhupāda: So you can give me that.

Conversation During Massage -- January 23, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: Yes. Everyone is required. But he must be a Vaiṣṇava. That's all. Actually none of us belong to any group. They are servant of Kṛṣṇa, and for Kṛṣṇa's sake he can act as a brāhmaṇa, as a kṣatriya, as a vaiśya or a śūdra. It doesn't matter. It is all Kṛṣṇa's service. Just like he is giving massage. That does not mean he's a śūdra. This is actual śūdra's business, servant. But he's not a śūdra. Similarly, we can act for Kṛṣṇa in any position. We do not belong to this material occupation or platform. Sa guṇān samatītyaitān brahma-bhūyāya kalpate (BG 14.26). This is to be dwelled on.(?) He's above all this nonsense. Brahma-bhūyāya means liberated. Jīvan-mukta sa ucyate. Jīvan-mukta means he may act in this life as a kṣatriya, brāhmaṇa, śūdra. It doesn't matter. But he's liberated. He's not going to take birth again. Tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti (BG 4.9). A śūdra cannot get that position. So try to understand our philosophy thoroughly and distribute it. Janma sārthaka kari' kara paropakāra. At least nobody can defeat our philosophy in the whole world. That position we have.

Room Conversation -- January 24, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: No. Alta it is called. And gumta (?). Somebody is giving massage. Lalitā Didi. Rayarāma dāsa's guru-bhai. This Rāma dāsa's, I have... "Nitāi gaura rādhe śyāma." This Rāma dāsa and that Lalitā, they're Godbrothers. So many... And amongst them there was fight—"You said that you have done this wrong," "You said you have done this wrong." But both of them are dead and gone. There are so many that, Sakhībhekhī. All women. Sometimes he—I have heard all this—he will observe the menstrual period. (laughter) To laugh or lament? "He's in menstrual period." This Ramakrishna did. He was also, because Jagamati experimented.

Room Conversation -- January 24, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: He was carried with me. So he was taking care of the Deity, giving massage and keeping... Devānanda also doing that. The rascal gone, left, hippie, doing...

Gurukṛpa: Yes, smoking gañja.

Prabhupāda: And no, he was very good boy, doing everything.

Gurukṛpa: Before him I think was Karttikeya.

Prabhupāda: Eh? Yes. Karttikeya was also doing that. What can be done? I was carrying that Deity, you know?

Gurukṛpa: In Calcutta. They are now in Calcutta.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That's it.

Evening Conversation -- January 25, 1977, Puri:

Gargamuni: Yes. Left side. We had to massage constantly.

Prabhupāda: No, they were arranging for some operation.

Gargamuni: Yes. Those doctors.

Prabhupāda: I told Kīrtanānanda, "Give me massage."

Gargamuni: I can remember. I wheeled you down for test.

Prabhupāda: The heart was also very painful still.

Gargamuni: They wanted to take some blood, and I had to stop them.

Prabhupāda: They were examining my brain. Then I thought, "I must go away." I told, "Doctor, I am all right. I can go."

Gargamuni: They wanted to do so many tests. They wanted to take also from spine.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversations -- February 20, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Twice. Eight tablets.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Modern medicine, they would combine all those in one pill. When you take your massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda, do you find it more relaxing and beneficial if there's no talking going on, or...?

Prabhupāda: Not necessarily.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It doesn't matter. (break)

Prabhupāda: For us it is not joke.

Room Conversation With Artists and About BTG -- February 25, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Hmm. Left eye. (about massage?) (some quiet laughter)

Rāmeśvara: Śrīla Prabhupāda, for this GBC meeting, I understand one of topics will be to discuss some things about Back to Godhead. So I wasn't here when you gave your instructions. So I was wondering if you could give me some idea what you want done, so I can also think about how to improve the magazine. Something is wrong in the magazine?

Prabhupāda: That...

Rāmeśvara: A few things in this last issue.

Prabhupāda: The thing is that you should not change abruptly without any sanction.

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda, I'm just thinking that in about ten minutes you're going to have to go down. This can be discussed during the massage.

Prabhupāda: All right.

Rāmeśvara: So we can fix a time, because of the meetings, there's no chance.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: There'll be time.

Hari-śauri: We can fix a time.

Prabhupāda: During massaging.

Rāmeśvara: After the GBC meetings.

Prabhupāda: All right.

Room Conversation First Day in Juhu Quarters -- March 30, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: And this is for sitting.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: For sitting. And that's for resting, that room. Bathrooms are there.

Prabhupāda: And where to keep the legs? (laughter) For massaging.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: On top of our heads.

Prabhupāda: (laughs) Hare Kṛṣṇa. So to finish the whole thing, how long it will take?

Saurabha: For the guesthouse?

Prabhupāda: All temple.

Room Conversation -- April 2, 1977, Bombay:

Guru dāsa: He has descended to give you massage. (Bhavānanda is massaging Śrīla Prabhupāda?) (laughter)

Bhavānanda: I think this side is no longer sore.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Striking on the bone, so for an old man striking on the bone is very harmful.

Guru dāsa: Everybody sends their well-wishes to you, in Vṛndāvana and everywhere.

Prabhupāda: Thank you.

Morning Conversation -- April 19, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: No, no. It is made by layman, so it is not valuable.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yadubara is coming to see you at the end of the massage today, so maybe you could give him some further direction.

Prabhupāda: What I can do? He'll do.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Just if you tell him that he should start this movie over again.

Prabhupāda: He should not produce such thing without consulting the scientific men.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Actually I suggest that we make another movie.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- April 22, 1977, Bombay:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It's getting to be time for your massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Hm. Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Time now.

Prabhupāda: Stick to our principle, and see our GBC is very alert. Then everything will go on, even I am not present. Do that. That is my request. Whatever little I have taught you, follow that, and nobody will be aggrieved. No māyā will touch you. Now Kṛṣṇa has given us, and there will be no scarcity of money. You print book and sell. So everything is there. We have got good shelter all over the world. We have got income. You stick to our principles, follow the... Even if I die suddenly, you'll be able to manage. That's all. That I want. Manage nicely and let the movement go forward. Now arrange. Don't go backward. Be careful. Āpani ācari prabhu jīveri śikṣāya. Some eau de cologne smell? Eau de cologne?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What kind of smell?

Prabhupāda: Eau de cologne.

Room Conversation -- April 22, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: If required, he can cook also. He knows how. I gave... In the beginning he was cooking. He was from very beginning. Good or bad, he was doing. Gaurasundara and his wife, they were our secretaries, and he was cooking in the San Francisco.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I remember that. Yeah, he ever has to cook, I can give massage if necessary.

Prabhupāda: (indistinct) was working as postman. (end)

Room Conversation -- May 2, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Sit up, not so painful.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Maybe some gentle massaging on the heart would be good.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Morning he gave me a little massage. So there was little relief.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Gave you massage on the chest?

Prabhupāda: No, no, head, here...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I remember, in Los Angeles a long time ago you were having some pain in the heart. At that time we massaged your heart gently and you felt relief.

Upendra: Some workmen have come.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Upendra: Some workmen and one devotee have come to do something to the drain.

Prabhupāda: Repair. That is their daily business.

Room Conversation -- May 2, 1977, Bombay:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So that massaging, I remember...

Prabhupāda: Hm. Yes. (break) ...or (indistinct).

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: A little difficult. Difficult. Risky.

Prabhupāda: Risky.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Under the circumstances... Oh.

Upendra: (indistinct)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: (to Upendra:) Yeah, I'll be back. Tell him it'll be ready tomorrow.

Prabhupāda: What is the...? (break) ...already a artificial kidney.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, Prabhupāda. For two years.

Prabhupāda: So it is not working.

Conversation Pieces -- May 27, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yes. In this way make it immediately.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So you're gonna have your massage now.

Prabhupāda: Hm.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: And the next group is coming out at three. That's nearly five hours from now. So I think that immediately we can have a meeting and discuss these points and immediately...

Prabhupāda: No, discussion I have already given. You do this.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: No, I meant... And execute this.

Prabhupāda: All right, you do it. Don't delay. (break) Life is within the atom. Aṇḍāntara-stham. That life in due course of time, it comes out through the water. All of a sudden there is bubble coming down, coming down. That is the beginning of generation. What do you think, that? Jalajā. Kṣīṇe puṇye punaḥ martya-lokaṁ viśanti. They are elevated very high planetary system. Again, after reminiscing, they come down. That is described in the śāstra, fall down through rains. Again, like bubbles, come out. (break) Where? The bottom of the earth, giving life. That is already done. In favorable circumstances, due course of time, it comes out. (aside:) You keep. (break) Lots of money.

Morning Conversation -- May 29, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: So make it four varieties. That will be first class. Don't print twenty thousand. Print five thousand.

Gargamuni: I have asked Gaura-Govinda to come. He'll be coming in one or two days.

Prabhupāda: There is no need of coming. This is... You must have at least four, five, varieties. And money, if there is scarcity, ask Gopāla. He'll give you money. Then sell and return.

Bhavānanda: Śrīla Prabhupāda? Śrīla Prabhupāda? It's time for massage?

Prabhupāda: What is that?

Bhavānanda: Time for massage. (break)

Brahmānanda: Sixty-five acres.

Prabhupāda: He's already Peace Corps(?)?

Brahmānanda: Yes.

Prabhupāda: Government will like.

Discussions with Devotees and Conversation with Dr. Ghosh -- June 1, 1977, Vrndavana:

Upendra: Massage. He's cooking.

Prabhupāda: (Bengali) (Bengali conversation) We have got black cows.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: We have black cows.

Dr. Ghosh: (Bengali) (Bengali conversation)

Prabhupāda: He said there is no fear. Everything is all right.

Room Conversation -- June 17, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: It was hint already, that "I want to go back."

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Actually at that time we were massaging your heart. It was such a shock to you. And I remember, the only medicine you want... We were massaging your heart and reading Kṛṣṇa book. And you developed a very bad cough.

Prabhupāda: I do not wish to recall that. It was intolerable. Then these things were now brought to... Otherwise I did not like to come back. I would have stayed.

Room Conversation -- June 18, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Nonsense comfortably... They have changed the season? Is it comfortable? We have to take this cooling machine. What is the practical benefit? You can say that it is comfortable. That's all right. But that does not mean that you have moved the uncomfortable situation. You are struggling against. That much you can take credit. Real benefit is not there. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā. Janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi (BG 13.9). Real unhappiness is this, that you are: "Why I am struggling? I don't want death." Actually why I am taking massage and so on, so on? So that I may not die. So where is the scientists' guarantee, "No, you'll not die"? Has he any...? You'll struggle only. That's all. The scientists cannot guarantee, "No, you'll not die." That is real guarantee. "You'll die comfortably." Hm? Die comfortably? Now there is no appetite. Where is the scientist, assuring, "Take"? What actual benefit they have done? They are giving some... Nothing they have given. It is simply bluff. Things without which we could do, such things are there. There were no motorcars. There was horse carriage and bullock carriage. Things were going on.

Conversation with Svarupa Damodara -- June 21, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Very nice.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You were sitting on it. Prabhupāda would sit up there in the evening, and he even took massage sometimes. The most... Excuse me, Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Very nice roof.

Conversation: 'How to Secure Brahmacaris' -- June 24, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Not tasteful, not bad. It can be drunk. So that's all right. (Bengali) This is evening. And morning you can give. Not very difficult. (Bengali) ...ideal institute. I am thinking so many things, but my life is ending. So keep this ideal, especially young men. That's all.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda, this is the time that you start to take your massage.

Prabhupāda: Hm. Now you can go.

Yaśodānandana: Jaya oṁ viṣṇu-pāda paramahaṁsa parivrājakācārya aṣṭottara-śata śrī śrīmad bhaktivedānta svāmī prabhupāda mahārāja ki jaya.

Devotees: Jaya. (break)

Prabhupāda: (Bengali conversation with Indian devotees) So credit there must be.

Morning Talk -- June 27, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Then what kind of preaching he has done? Nobody knows him. This common sense they haven't got. And here it is advertised, "Vivekananda has converted whole America into Vedantist." (laughs) And they take money for that. (pause) Pradyumna may see me ten minutes a day. That will be simplified. He comes after week.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah. I talked to him. I asked him, "Why don't you discuss your questions with Bhakti-prema Swami first? And then, if he cannot answer, then go ask Śrīla Prabhupāda."

Prabhupāda: That's all right. He may come during my massage time daily, ten minutes.

Conversations -- June 28, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Slow and sure.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. But let us see. When it is so slow, it's not sure yet. If you want, you could take a little rest before your massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda. You didn't get much rest outside.

Prabhupāda: That's all right. (break) I think they have suffered, regularly living with rats.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Calcutta and Delhi.

Prabhupāda: Poor quarter. Still they are happy. The rats are jumping over your body.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Sounds like Hare Kṛṣṇa Land, Juhu.

Conversations -- June 28, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: So just try to help them, help them, introduce them, and give everything. That is my request. As far as possible, I have such a big plan. Who'll merit the ideas? We never...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura uses the word "revive," that if Kṛṣṇa consciousness is revived, then one pure soul can learn.

Prabhupāda: That is paramparā. Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma is there. Guru Mahārāja is present. (too faint)

Upendra: All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda. (break) (long pause) You'll take in your room, massage?

Prabhupāda: (too faint)

Upendra: You want to go?

Prabhupāda: All right.

Conversation with Bhakti-caitanya Swami-New GBC -- June 30, 1977, Vrindaban:

Prabhupāda: Because we are Hindu attached, so there is temporary information(?). Tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata: "Tolerate." Don't be puffed up, "Oh, after giving so many..." Oh.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: After you go in the back for a massage, he'll ask some questions.

Prabhupāda: That's nice. What are those... (break)

Letter from Yugoslavia--'Books!' -- June 30, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: So do it nicely so that in future it may not.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: All right. It'll be a little banging. I told them tomorrow morning, when you're in massage, when you're in the garden, then they can do. I don't want them to do it while you're in this room. "Feeling a little satisfied that this school had been properly inoculated, I picked up my two bags and ran to the train station with great enthusiasm, because now I was going to meet Gurudāsa Goswami, who had come to Yugoslavia to join me. Not having the association of the devotees for many weeks...," all by himself, "...this thought of meeting..."

Prabhupāda: So try to engage Gurudāsa also as your cooperator. Yes.

Room Conversation With Son (Vrindavan De) -- July 5, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: I went to... You know. So in what way I went? With a tin box and some literature. And how I have come back? You rascal, you have no eyes to see. You have seen how I went and how I came back. This is practical. I worked for this. I labored for it. It all depends on one's capacity. Otherwise immediately I'll give you charge. You cannot do here anything. So you'll get this letter. That's assurance. (Bengali) Keep it as document. That's all. I'll stamp it. All right, I shall meet again with you. Give him that.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Prabhupāda takes his massage now. (break)

Prabhupāda: I have heard that still he is keeping, "I am devotee of Kṛṣṇa," still, in this fallen condition. How (indistinct). Take this. (break) Kṛṣṇa consciousness is so nice. It is great ocean of such glory. Tad-vīrya-gāyana-mahāmṛta-magna-cittaḥ.

Room Conversation With Son (Vrindavan De) -- July 5, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Hm. Yes. Well, this is my condition. I would have... Otherwise I would have gone there. Very nice and fresh.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I think it's time for your massage, Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Hm. Now we shall go.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So I'll be over by... (break)

Prabhupāda: Human form of body or in the form of this insect. And karmīs, they're trying to improve their... (microphone moving) That is their ignorance.

Room Conversations -- July 7, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: That Mr. Neta came?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: His name is Mr. Pattak, isn't it?

Prabhupāda: Oh, Pattak, Pattak, yes. That's all right.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: After massage I can come and see you and give some... (end)

Room Conversation Mayapura attack -- July 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: It is not government. Just see to the head of the government, that Bose? He's planning how to cut down religious movement, keeping aside.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Would you like a little foot massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: No. (pause) We read from Bhāgavatam they held meeting that "We must shift from this place. The demons are disturbing. For the benefit of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma we must change this place." So the meeting was held in the morning, and they decided, "Let us immediately leave." So...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: How long did it take them to shift?

Prabhupāda: Just hearing, adyaiva, today, and immediately began. So how simple living was.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: If they could shift in one day they must have lived so simple.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- July 19, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yes. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā.

bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ
sarva-loka-maheśvaram
suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānām
jñātvā māṁ śāntim...
(BG 5.29)

Because we are accepting Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Person, enjoyer, He is the proprietor... We immediately accept this philosophy. Therefore we are getting little peace. Today I am thinking of massaging with oil. What do you think?

Upendra: Well, it's been some days now, huh?

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah, a little bit. Every three days or so. I don't think there's any harm. That oil massage seems to give you... You seem to enjoy it more, Śrīla Prabhupāda. What is the reason?

Prabhupāda: It makes the whole body soothing.

Room Conversation Gaurasundara, Dr. Kapoor -- July 26, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: (Bengali) Prāṇa āche yāṅra, sei hetu pracāra.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda, will you be taking your massage this evening?

Prabhupāda: Um hm.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It's about 8:30 now. Maybe we should... We're about an hour behind. That report was so ecstatic that we forgot the time. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...without any venue. That is something. "And what is this? This is Vedas?"(?) Sarcastically, humorously... Why people have become so rascal?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Not better than any cockroach.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Less than a cockroach.

Room Conversation -- October 3, 1977, Vrndavana:

Sac-cid-ānanda: Hot cloth and ginger juice, hot, massaging over.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Ginger juice.

Sac-cid-ānanda: And making hot...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massage on chest for mucus to come out.

Prabhupāda: If the mucus come out, the prana(?) come out.

Room Conversation -- October 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: This oil massage is very pleasing.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: It's pleasing for you and for the masseur also. (break) ...simply have to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa for you and read Bhāgavata, take nice care as much as we are able to, and leave the rest to Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma. At least we're sure that that is the right medicine. That shawl that mother Satyabhāmā made is very nice. It's the first thing that any..., first time that any ISKCON devotee has spun the wool from the sheep. And her letter was also very nice.

Prabhupāda: It is fur purchased from the market? Fur? Wool. Wool.

Room Conversation -- October 6, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: This here Sac-cid-ānanda, where he is?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He is here. You want to speak with him about the kavirāja? We can call him.

Prabhupāda: Hm. Yes. So that cursian(?) massaging?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: The powder massaging? Yes. Should we do it again?

Prabhupāda: Why not?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I like it. I think it's good for you. Can we put some just now? I can do? Okay. (break)

Prabhupāda: He is bho(?) kavirāja, 1971 or '2. No, fifty... (break) (Bengali conversation) (break)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: ...arrange for that?

Prabhupāda: Let the first gate be finished.

Room Conversation -- October 9, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Oh, Kīrtanānanda, you are doing. (devotees laugh)

Jayatīrtha: He is your original masseur. He wants his old job back now.

Prabhupāda: Not so hard. (laughs)

Room Conversation -- October 9, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You want some head massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda? Little oil? Without oil. Would you like a little kīrtana, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Rāmeśvara Mahārāja, why don't you lead? Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Prabhupāda: He opened a branch in Pakistan.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Did he open a branch in Pakistan?

Rāmeśvara: Not yet. There's one woman in Karachi who is Hindu woman. But her husband was a governor, one of the governors in Pakistan. He was a Muslim and he just died. And now she wants to reestablish her Hindu faith. She contacted me in Los Angeles and she wants to help open the temple in Pakistan. So I have given the name and address to Ātreya. (leads kīrtana) (break)

Prabhupāda: That will be our excellent achievement. This is our mission, the... Whatever we have got, teach others. In this spread. The whole world is chanting. Did you recite the verses in Fiji?

Yaśodā-nandana: Yes. In Fiji we recited all those verses, Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: They appreciated?

Yaśodā-nandana: Yes. People liked it very much. They had never heard before.

Prabhupāda: Very good. The Gurukula is meant for this purpose. Teach them and let them go around the world to teach. Taroho e bhava-sindhu. Durlabha mānava-janama sat-saṅge, taroho e bhava-sindhu re. This is our mission.

Room Conversation -- October 10, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: I want to sleep.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Should I massage you a little to help you sleep? Okay. Where should I give you massage especially? Where should I massage you especially? Which part?

Prabhupāda: Any part.

Room Conversation With Svarupa Damodara -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yes. Make it an ideal institution. Who are you?

Abhirāma: Abhirāma, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Massage.

Abhirāma: Yes.

Prabhupāda: There is oil?

Abhirāma: Yes.

Prabhupāda: It must be...

Abhirāma: Hot.

Prabhupāda: No.

Abhirāma: Heated. Warm.

Prabhupāda: Warm it is already. It must be sucked while rubbing. This must be dried up.

Room Conversation With Svarupa Damodara -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: So, he is the head office man?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. So he's agreeing to do everything. They have to do everything. They're just workers for the head office. They cannot act independently of the head office. They have to carry out the orders of the head office.

Prabhupāda: So you saw the massaging?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, Śrīla Prabhupāda. How are you feeling after it?

Prabhupāda: Good.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I think massage is good. It will keep your body a little bit loosened and...

Prabhupāda: So where they have gone?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He's supposed to be coming back. I do not know if he's gone with Bhagatji, but he said that he'd be coming back in a short time. I think that this program of massaging and also using your brain for translating little bit...

Prabhupāda: Ah.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I think that is also very important.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: What medicine?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Quinine, and I think Śrīdhara Swami is arranging some other medicines. There is malaria epidemic in India. In Hyderabad every family, at least one person, has malaria. It's all over India, even in big cities. Bhakti-prema Swami, he also has malaria. Mosquitoes seem to be a very envious creature. Are you liking the massage, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He is using the same idea as that brahmacārī, putting hot on different places.

Upendra: Leg. Tell him the leg.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You have to explain to him about massaging.

Upendra: We did already.

Room Conversation -- October 15, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Maybe he can give some special massaging there.

Indian man (1): (Hindi)

Upendra: After some time I think it will go away with the massage. I mean from lack of movement.

Indian man (2) (Viśvambhara?): He said, "I am trying very slowly. He will not be able to tolerate if it hard massage."

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: He seems like a good massage man.

Prabhupāda: So, why not publish in large quantity of..., large number of books?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, I think that's advisable. There has been some complaints again about no stock.

Prabhupāda: Why it is not being done? There is money?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Jayapatākā had some complaint today.

Room Conversation -- October 18, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: This light massage he is doing...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: ...it is giving me comfort.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Light massage.

Bhakti-caru: You want it now, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: This massage you were doing is good.

Prabhupāda: Dr. Ghosh said no massage. The other doctor says, "No, what is the harm?"

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: One thing that we have seen is that when Dr. Ghosh and Dr. Gopal talk, they disagree on a number of points. Someone pointed out that Dr. Ghosh is a little bit old-fashioned. He's not so much up-to-date any more.

Room Conversation -- October 18, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: ...the massage is giving me relief. (sound of mosquito flying)

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: We are applying it with love, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: The mosquitoes, they are warning.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Don't worry. They won't get you while we're near. The mass... The professional massage man, he massages with oil, and we are massaging with love.

Prabhupāda: That oil creates some ant.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. The ants are attracted by its sweetness. But we are only hoping to attract you by the sweetness of our massage. No ants will come.

Bhagavān: Your juice is here, Śrīla Prabhupāda. Would you like to sit up? (pause) (break)

Prabhupāda: ...softly and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. (break) ...mind, niveśaya, fix up in Kṛṣṇa. This is Rūpa Gosvāmī method. Yena tena prakāreṇa manaḥ kṛṣṇe niveśayet. So you are already attached to Kṛṣṇa. You'll see the picture and enjoy. So you can give this picture to him, his own.

Room Conversation -- October 21, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Nitāi-Gaura. Premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti (Bs. 5.38), (Tamāla Kṛṣṇa chants with Prabhupāda) yaṁ śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi. Śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpam. Still the śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpam is going on; otherwise, simply some bones, nothing else. Everything is finished. Nitāi-Gaura and rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan (Tamāla Kṛṣṇa chants with Prabhupāda) nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu, kṛṣṇaḥ svayaṁ sama... (Bs. 5.39). You can give massage. Hm. So what is the next drinking?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What is the next drinking? Make something nice.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Bhavānanda: It's cold custard.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Want some cold custard?

Prabhupāda: Whatever you give, I'll take.

Room Conversation -- October 21, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda:

śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu nityānanda
śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda

(I offer my obeisances to Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, Prabhu Nityānanda, Śrī Advaita, Gadādhara, Śrīvāsa and all others in the line of devotion.)

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

(My dear Lord, and the spiritual energy of the Lord, kindly engage me in Your service. I am now embarrassed with this material service. Please engage me in Your service.)

This is from Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Then Brahma-saṁhitā.
rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan
nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu
kṛṣṇaḥ svayaṁ samabhavat paramaḥ pumān yo
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi
(Bs. 5.39)

Then again from Brahma-saṁhitā, premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu (Bs. 5.38). These mantras should be recited so that I can hear, you can hear, occasionally. And kīrtana must go on. And physically, massage. Sometimes that brahmi oil massage on the head. (break) Translating, whatever I have done in this state, is it going right?

Room Conversation -- October 21, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yadubara is good devotee.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yadubara is a good devotee. Very dedicated devotee. You remember he cooked bati chachury(?) very nice also for you. He was cooking for you in Hrishikesh, massaging. Very intelligent.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: His wife is also intelligent, Viśākhā.

Prabhupāda: Yadubara has become first devotee.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Has become first, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: First devotee before his wife.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: First devotee before his wife, yes. You convinced him. He did not come here thinking to become a devotee. Remember, he came for photography work.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- October 26, 1977, Vrndavana:

Bhavānanda: Bharadvāja Prabhu was just telling me that he's noticed-he's been massaging your legs—that your legs and feet are warmer today than they were yesterday. I have noticed over the past three or four days that your feet have been cold. Extremities, your hands and your feet, have been very cold. Now that's a sign of strength. We feel that the change from the makara-dhvaja is going to be subtle, not so swift in terms of renewed vigor. Even allopathic medicine... You took so much allopathic medicine, and you took that even more than you're willing to take this Ayurvedic medicine. That you took for three days. This you haven't even taken one full day. Of course, we're not placing all of our hopes on the medicine as such. We've been placing all of our prayers at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.

Prabhupāda: No, that is the only hope. All hopes fail.

Room Conversation -- October 30, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Yesterday I felt some. But this massage is always...

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massage is always welcome. Perhaps this might be a nice time to call Jayādvaita and Pradyumna. Do you feel like speaking and hearing about Bhāgavatam?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- November 8, 1977, Vrndavana:

Bhavānanda: Upendra and I would like to give you a massage. Is that all right? But to do good, full job, we have to lay you on your back. Is that all right?

Prabhupāda: Yes. Whatever you like.

Room Conversation -- November 11, 1977, Vrndavana:

Jayapatākā: "My" must mean massage.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massage? Where, Śrīla Prabhupāda? On your leg?

Prabhupāda: On the corner of the waist.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Both sides?

Prabhupāda: No, left side.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Here, Śrīla Prabhupāda. Hm?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Room Conversation -- November 11, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: (aside:) He's going now? So we will take him back. You arrange. He'll come. Anudeśa, you arrange for the car also. Help Bhakti-caru. Is this giving you a little relief, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: Yes. Yes.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Massaging your legs are Bhavānanda Mahārāja and Girirāja. (pause)

Prabhupāda: Soda water?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Bol, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: The soda-water sound.

Bhavānanda: Soda water?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Soda water?

Prabhupāda: You don't hear the sound of soda water.
