His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada's Appearance Day, SB 6.3.24 -- Gorakhpur, February 15, 1971:

Mālatī: This lecture was recorded on February 15, 1971, in the morning, and it was in Gorakhpur, in U.P., India. It was on the occasion of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī's Appearance Day. That day, we fasted in the morning up till noon time. Then we offered a regular noon meal, and in the evening time there was the feast of four preparations: puris, halavā, vegetable, and chutney.

Prabhupāda:

etāvatālam agha-nirharaṇāya puṁsāṁ
saṅkīrtanaṁ bhagavato guṇa-karma-nāmnām
vikruśya putram aghavān yad ajāmilo 'pi
nārāyaṇeti mriyamāṇa iyāya muktim
(SB 6.3.24)

So we have concluded this verse, that Yamarāja says that the holy name of the Personality of Godhead, Bhāgavata, not only His name, but also His activities and His qualities, these qualities... Last night, somebody was discussing with me saguṇa and nirguṇa. Saguṇa means, according to their version, or a standard version, saguṇa means the material quality. They worship saguṇa-rūpa. Saguṇa means forms of this material world.

Prabhupāda: After ārati and little talk, that's all.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Then we serve prasādam. And how many men would you say we should prepare for? One hundred?

Prabhupāda: That you make arrangement. You know how many people are coming. Why you are asking me?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So ordinary prasādam at noontime and feasting prasādam...

Prabhupāda: Feasting means puri and halavā and a vegetable and a chutney. That's all. Four things. Make simple.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: And Prabhupāda? Do you want us to offer feast to your Guru Mahārāja at noontime? A special plate of feast?

Prabhupāda: Not a special plate. The process is that whatever we offer to the Deity, that is offered to guru. And guru offers to his guru. In this way goes to Kṛṣṇa. We don't directly offer Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. No. We have no right. Neither He accepts in that way. The pictures of the ācāryas, why there are? Actually, one has to offer the plate to his guru, and he'll offer his guru, he offers his guru, his guru. In this way it will go to Kṛṣṇa. That is the process. You cannot directly approach Kṛṣṇa or other subordinates to Kṛṣṇa. That is not possible.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: So may we offer you a special feasting?

Prabhupāda: As you do, that is all right. The process is this. Not you or you. That is the process. Then, all right. (end)

Morning Walk -- August 28, 1975, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: There are so many nim trees.

Harikeśa: You were telling us last year about nim leaves being very good for the stomach.

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes.

Harikeśa: Would you like some? We can bring you some nim leaves?

Prabhupāda: Yes, little paste. I can take.

Harikeśa: Mash it in like a nim chutney.

Dhanañjaya: Mortar and pestle.

Harikeśa: Put anything else in it?

Prabhupāda: No. A small pill. It increases appetite. Which way? This way?

Harikeśa: This way. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...know how to make kichri?

Harikeśa: Yes. I made for you in Hawaii.

Prabhupāda: Ah. So do it today. Kichri and eggplant, fried, and some vegetables. That's all. I'll take between one, half past one. So begin about...

Harikeśa: Twelve-thirty?

Prabhupāda: Yes. I shall go this way or that way? Whose, this garden? Where is our temple?

Conversation in Airport and Car -- June 21, 1976, Toronto:

Prabhupāda: You can supply them ghee.

Kīrtanānanda: Yes, we can do that.

Prabhupāda: You grow podina? Podina? Mint? Mint?

Kīrtanānanda: Mint? Yes.

Prabhupāda: Chutney.

Kīrtanānanda: Mint chutney. How do you make mint chutney?

Prabhupāda: I'll teach you. You have got mango?

Kīrtanānanda: Yes.

Prabhupāda: I'll teach you. Chili?

Kīrtanānanda: They are not ripe yet. The plants are still too small.

Prabhupāda: They are not giving chili?

Kīrtanānanda: Not yet, it is too early. In August. But I can get. I can get green chili. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...something to drink?

Kīrtanānanda: No.

Hari-śauri: I don't know what happened to that orange juice. Someone else was carrying it. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...because it is also nice.

Room Conversation -- August 3, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: So show the simple example that how by simple living and thinking of Kṛṣṇa, one can become perfect and happy.

Hari-śauri: People's minds are so much agitated by false desire that they can't appreciate anything. Real beauty they overlook, searching for something else.

Prabhupāda: My mother used to make puffed rice at home. So there is special rice available for making puffed rice. Either you can prepare at home or you can purchase in the market, special rice. So she was preparing nice puffed rice, very, very nice. In a sand pot. My mother was always engaged in making some food preparation. Some pickle, some chutney, and this puffed rice, or something else, something else, something else. Besides cooking for the family, she was being assisted by my sisters. Always palatable foodstuff. So many guests were there, and if son-in-law would come, they would specially prepare food for him. To receive guests, give them nice food to eat, prepare nice food for the family, this is the Indian pleasure. They are not very much, nowadays, for upkeep of the home, very... That, in their own way, they keep it very nicely. Every utensils, very cleansed, they are kept ready for use, some cloth. If you go in a poor man's home, but you'll find everything very neat and clean. Ask these gṛhasthas to keep their home very neat and clean. Are they keeping?

Bhagavān: Yes.

Prabhupāda: What are the general program for eating?

Room Conversation -- August 22, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: So I will go. You send car?

Endowment Commissioner: Car, I will send one car.

Mahāṁśa: As soon as your car comes, we will leave.

Prabhupāda: You can give him that paper. Today is very nice report about our activities in the Sunday Chronicle. You can go up to the car. Go up to the car. So, I shall take little khicuḍi at half past one. Khicuḍi as he, as you gave in the first, very thin, but same way. And that lemon chutney.

Maṇihāra: Lemon pickle.

Prabhupāda: Pickle, yes. Khicuḍi with potato and other vegetables, and ghee should be given separately as I... Make it simplified. If I go to rest at two o'clock, then it will be possible to start. So see that it is quickly done. We shall go and come back by half past twelve. In Europe especially, if they do not change their mode of living, reject spiritual life, then gradually the whole situation will be dangerous. Then there will be no water supply.

Room Conversation -- November 13, 1976, Vrndavana:

Devotee: Puṣpānna rice?

Prabhupāda: Little, little.

Devotee: Always keep it simple, puris, one, and one other thing?

Prabhupāda: No, one kind. Either puri or puṣpānna or khicuḍi, like that. You cannot make.

Devotee: Tonight I made sabji and puri.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That is easiest, puri and sabji. Similarly, khicuḍi and sabji, puṣpānna and chutney, like that. Temple means feeding them with prasādam. In Bombay the Sunday feast going on?

Surabhi: We don't have so much facility to feed them because there's only the temple floor so there's always a big crowd and we have to do two shifts. So sometimes...

Prabhupāda: When it will be complete, more facility.

Surabhi: Oh, yes, then it will be... Everything...

Prabhupāda: Take prasādam, see drama, read books, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Bas. And if you like, you can live with us. So where is the difficulty? Ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt (Vedānta-sūtra 1.1.12). Ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhāvitābhis tābhir ya eva nija-rūpatayā (Bs. 5.37). (pause) That American politician has predicted that "This Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, within ten years, they will capture our government." (laughs) So do it actually. Then it will be very nice. It is not... Simply take the people in your favor; the government is yours. That they are afraid of. The young boys, they are taking Hare Kṛṣṇa movement seriously, so the government can be changed in their favor. After all, it is democracy. So you can do it. You become president. You become senator. In America it is possible. And if America accepts... What about this new president? Or... Formerly I heard about him that he is religious man.

Letter to Russian -- January 5, 1977, Bombay:

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: So Prabhupāda, I can go to Santa Cruz and get you very nice idlis. They have a very nice Madras cafe there.

Prabhupāda: I think some of our men, they make. Mr. Mennon?

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, his wife is sick. So I don't know if he would make it right away. You want to eat it right away, tonight, isn't it? There's a nice Madras cafe near Santa Cruz station on Willard Furrough.(?) I can go and get you from there.

Prabhupāda: If you can get, bring.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. Should I bring that coconut chutney also?

Prabhupāda: Yes. That is essential.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Okay. I'll bring about six or eight.

Prabhupāda: You can bring. I'll take, utmost, one or two.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Okay. I'll go and bring it now.

Prabhupāda: So I have decided to construct a temple in Bhuvaneśvara.

Room Conversation with GBC members -- March 2-3, 1977, Mayapura:

Pañcadraviḍa: All right. You mean khicuṛi?

Jayapatākā: Those that eat, they are satisfied.

Pañcadraviḍa: I was told that we were doing it for everyone.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda suggested khicuṛi...

Prabhupāda: Make one khicuṛi, one potato, one eggplant vegetable. No, tomato-eggplant. Tomato.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. Tomato. Chutney?

Prabhupāda: Chutney.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Tomato chutney.

Prabhupāda: It is very nice. And if possible, little paramānna.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Little?

Prabhupāda: Paramānna, sweet rice.

Pañcadraviḍa: So for this, tomorrow we are...

Prabhupāda: Then people will be very much satisfied.

Room Conversation with GBC members -- March 2-3, 1977, Mayapura:

Jayapatākā: Śrīla Prabhupāda? My mother left this morning, and she wrote a letter to you. I'd like you... If I could read it... "Śrīla Prabhupāda: I am sorry to hear of your illness. Jayapatākā tells me swift changes in temperature cause many illnesses in Māyāpur. A place so beautiful must have its thorns. May your recovery be soon. It was auspicious for me to have met you. Not having seen my son for so long, finding him in the midst of God's blessings at ISKCON with a spiritual master of such great repute was humbling in its magnitude. Perhaps in some small measure I can help parents understand what their children are into and weaken their weapons. This visit will be shared with others. It was propitiously enjoyable. As far as fund-raising, there is a seminar on new methods I am trying to get to, but Kṛṣṇa seems to be pulling me back. Perhaps tomorrow I will be able to go to Calcutta and Delhi. I will be corresponding regularly with Jayapatākā. In a few months I plan to move to California. You have taken good care of my son. You have brainwashed the cobwebs of materialism (laughter) and elevated his soul. Your goodness radiates to all who meet you. May God bless your body with good health. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Jayapatākā's Ma."

Pañcadraviḍa: Śrīla Prabhupāda? I talked to... What's his name? Pañca-ratna. And he told me that they ordered everything to prepare khicuṛi, vegetable, sweet rice and tomato chutney for tomorrow.

Prabhupāda: Very good.

Pañcadraviḍa: And also for the day after they'll be serving something, and everybody who comes will be getting in addition to prasādam distribution, some prasādam in the temple also.

Prabhupāda: That's nice. Very good.

Morning Talk -- April 25, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: You just appoint one local cook. There are good cooks.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Oh, yeah.

Prabhupāda: That ḍāl, ruṭi and purina(?) chutney. If there is no vegetable, you can eat there nicely.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I don't think there'll be any problem at all for the fooding. Actually it seems to me it'll be a very good arrangement in everywhere. Simple but very nice.

Prabhupāda: If you can eat ḍāl, ruṭi with little Pudina chutney, that is sufficient.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah.

Prabhupāda: And at night little milk. Bas, complete food.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Good... He has some... He says they only have pure ghee there.

Prabhupāda: That's it. Very nice.

Room Conversation Arrival of Jayatirtha and Harikesa -- October 8, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You still feel that hair? (laughter)

Prabhupāda: This time what they supply?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: What they supplied? You mean prasādam? There was some... Of course, today is the day after Ekādaśī, so they had some cereal made with gur and some guava fruit salad with guavas and bananas. That was all this morning. Lunch is usually substantial, very good. It's the best prasādam that we have had in many years in India here. This boy, Ayodhyā-pati, he's doing very nicely. He cooks usually... Do you want to know what he cooks for lunch? He cooks a ālu sabji with dahi sauce, and he makes bindi, very nicely spiced, and ḍāl, ruṭis, rice, apple chutney, and dahi, raita. Every day.

Prabhupāda: Who assists him?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: About three other devotees. There's no hired people. They're all fired and gone. Only devotees are cooking, and very tasteful, and everybody, about a hundred and twenty devotees sit together and take prasādam. And the guests from the guesthouse, they also take there. Everyone takes together. No restaurant.

Prabhupāda: Guesthouse, they come.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes. Guesthouse people come and eat also in the prasāda hall.

Prabhupāda: Yes, that I wanted.

Letter to Yamuna -- Los Angeles 24 June, 1970:

Regarding your first question, while Lord Jagannatha is on His Ratha, and for the duration of the festivities for eight days following, bhuni kicrie may be offered along with other preparations. So for Rathayatra day feast should consist of bhuni kicrie which you make by first frying the dahl and rice in ghee. Also fry the vegetable with little ghee and massala. Then after the kicrie is cooked add some sugar, not enough to make it sweet, but just a little sweet taste, and some nutmeg, cinnamon, and other sweet spices. In this way it is like push pana. Other preparations may be a fruit salad, sweet rice, puris, a chutney, and a vegetable which is neither wet nor dry.

Letter to Bhagavan -- Los Angeles 7 July, 1971:

The restaurant proposal is very nice. It should be very neat and clean and in the center column there should be Guru Gauranga altar. Everything prepared should be offered and kept on a table and the customer or guest should come and take prasadam on a plate to his full satisfaction. He can sit at table with chair. The items of prasadam you already know; kachori, Luglu, Samosa, sweet balls, simply wonderful, vegetables, chutneys, puspana, halava, etc; The ingredients are easily available. As other things are available, you can increase your menu. And any party who pays more than $5.00 can be presented with a small book like Easy Journey, or Krishna, the Reservoir of Pleasure, and a copy of our magazine. And if possible, continually tapes should be played of kirtanas and songs and record albums also.
