Conversations and Morning Walks

1970 Conversations and Morning Walks

We Vaiṣṇavas, we are chanting. It does not mean that when there is need of fighting with avaiṣṇava we shall lack in strength. We can fight.
Room Conversation -- December 13, 1970, Indore:

Prabhupāda: That's nice proposal. Unless you find an enemy, how you can fight? So of course, we do not say... We Vaiṣṇavas do not say that there is no need of fighting. We never say. When there is need of fighting we must fight. Rather, somebody in New York, some Goldsmith, he was that, "Why Kṛṣṇa is advising Arjuna to fight, to become violent?" So somebody protests like that. But there is no meaning of protesting against the action of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is our view. So we Vaiṣṇavas, we are chanting. It does not mean that when there is need of fighting with avaiṣṇava we shall lack in strength. We can fight. One gentleman inquired from me that "Vaiṣṇavism makes one dull. He cannot act." And, "No. You have not seen a Vaiṣṇava." In the two fightings, great fighting, the Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata, the hero was Hanuman and Arjuna, and they fought.

1971 Conversations and Morning Walks

According to our ācāryas, Sanātana Gosvāmī, he says that "Don't hear scriptures from the devīl." Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtaṁ śravaṇaṁ naiva kartavyam." If a devīl's preaching about God, don't hear."
Room Conversation -- August 14, 1971, London:

Prabhupāda: And according to our ācāryas, Sanātana Gosvāmī, he says that "Don't hear scriptures from the devīl." Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtaṁ śravaṇaṁ naiva kartavyam." If a devīl's preaching about God, don't hear." If you say, "God is pure, so let me hear about God. It doesn't matter whether he is devīl or angel. It doesn't matter." No. The argument is sarpocchiṣṭaṁ payo yathā. Just like milk is very nourishing food, but if it is touched by the lips, by the tongue of a serpent, it becomes poison. Sarpocchiṣṭaṁ payo yathā. You cannot bring the milk which is touched by the serpent's tongue. So we should receive knowledge of God, message of God, from a person who is not a devīl. Then it will be effective. Otherwise, it will act as poison.

1974 Conversations and Morning Walks

Avaiṣṇava muhur jnena puta harir gatam.
Morning Walk -- March 29, 1974, Bombay:

Indian man (2): They say they're..., Kṛṣṇa is incarnation of Swami Narayan.

Prabhupāda: Yeah, they talk like that.

Dr. Patel: No, I don't think, they are not, they are small boys.

Prabhupāda: Whatever they may be, they, representative of the Swami Narayan, they said.

Dr. Patel: They have not represented the real thing...

Prabhupāda: "Swami Narayan is more than Kṛṣṇa."

Dr. Patel: Tomorrow these boys say you are more than Kṛṣṇa, then...

Prabhupāda: That's all right, they came to talk with me, representing Swami Narayan.

Dr. Patel: I represent Swami Narayan. Let us talk.

Prabhupāda: It is difficult to do it. You say something, he says something...

Dr. Patel: He's wrong... What Swami Narayan has written is right or wrong. That is his own handwriting. His own writing. Kṛṣṇa... (break) That is the injunction. Those fools are right or I am right?

Prabhupāda: Avaiṣṇava muhur jnena puta harir gatam. (?)

Dr. Patel: Mm, that's it.

Prabhupāda: Śravaṇaṁ na kartavyam. (?)

Dr. Patel: Śravaṇam, same thing. Don't hear anything we...

Sanātana Gosvāmī has therefore forbidden. Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇam pūta-hari-kathāmṛtam śravanām kartavyam: "Those who are not following Vaiṣṇava principles, one should not hear from him."
Room Conversation with Bhurijana dasa and Disciples -- July 1, 1974, Melbourne:

Prabhupāda: Now, last night Madhudviṣa Mahārāja was singing, and so many men became enthused to dance. So unless there is spiritual strength, it cannot be done. Others cannot ask and dance. No, that is not possible. That is not possible. Unless there is spiritual strength, you cannot enthuse others. So we should have to acquire spiritual strength by following the regulative principle. Sanātana Gosvāmī has therefore forbidden. Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇam pūta-hari-kathāmṛtam śravanām kartavyam: "Those who are not following Vaiṣṇava principles, one should not hear from him." Why? It is Kṛṣṇa-kathā, Kṛṣṇa's. Now sarpocchiṣṭa-payo yathā: "Milk is very good, but as soon as it is touched by a serpent, it is no more good. It is harmful." So one must be Vaiṣṇava. Unless one is Vaiṣṇava, there is injunction, "Don't hear from him. It will be poisonous." So one who is not following Vaiṣṇava principle, he cannot speak about Vaiṣṇava principle. It is harmful. That is forbidden by ācāryas, Sanātana Gosvāmī.

1975 Conversations and Morning Walks

Ācārya means Vaiṣṇava. And avaiṣṇava, Nayar.
Morning Walk -- November 20, 1975, Bombay:

Dr. Patel: These ācāryas, they are all Rāmānujācārya followers that Tithi Kṛṣṇam Ācāri(?) and Rajgopal Ācārya, and they are all these Vaiṣṇavas of Rāmānujācārya.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Ācārya means Vaiṣṇava. Ayar. Ayar. And avaiṣṇava, Nayar, yes.

Dr. Patel: Nayars are non-Aryans. Then the... All Nayars are black, charcoal black, because they are not Aryans. Aryans have the white, light skin.

Prabhupāda: Even in Madras there are many brāhmaṇas, black.

Dr. Patel: Brāhmaṇas, they are Ayars. They are quite... Even though they have settled in Madras for generations together, they are still having the color of... (Hindi)

Prabhupāda: No, no. Āryas, they are not Vaiṣṇava, then. Ayar? Eh?

Indian man (1): Śaṅkarācāryādi.(?)

Prabhupāda: Ācāryas, they are Vaiṣṇava.

Dr. Patel: He is also nayara, Mr. Mennon.

Prabhupāda: No, nayar is not brāhmaṇa.

Indian man (1): No brāhmaṇas. No brāhmaṇas.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Indian man (1): We have to serve the brāhmaṇas.

Dr. Patel: Don't serve them now. They are rascals.

1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtam... Because they are not Vaiṣṇava, politicians and—reject them immediately. Immediately. That is the injunction.
Room Conversation -- December 31, 1976, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: In Bhagavad-gītā it is clearly said, ācāryopāsanam. Amānitvam adambhitvam. This is the process of knowledge. These so-called scholars and politicians, they have no ācārya. Instead of being amānitvam, they're mani... "I have become a leader, so whatever I shall say, it will be accepted." This is going on. Very bad. It is clearly said, as soon as you give up the ācārya system it is rotten. Sa kāleneha yogo naṣṭaḥ parantapa. So things which is rotten, what you'll get benefit? That is going on. Therefore in spite of so many Gītā commentators, big, big leaders, scholars, not a single person is converted into a devotee. Not a single person amongst their followers. It's useless talking. Therefore it is forbidden. Avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ pūtam... Because they are not Vaiṣṇava, politicians and—reject them immediately. Immediately. That is the injunction.
